The Disconnect Between What We Want and What We Will Get

I know this is a discussion board. We all have our hopes and dreams, and all of us (most of us) are UK fans.

Maybe I’m just getting old. Cynical. Seen too much. I’d like to think I’m realistic (but wouldn’t we all).

Point 1:

“Anyone would be crazy and knows nothing about basketball if they don’t want Oscar back. He’s NPOTY!!”

Avoiding the nuances of this discussion. The mistake-riddled basketball that Oscar plays. The alienation of teammates. The fact that he’s old enough to be on his second NBA contract.

Will Cal still be the coach next year?

Looks like a yes to me.

How has Cal done coaching Oscar so far?

See, even if you love Oscar and think he’s amazing, he’s still working within the constraints of playing for Cal. We already know that doesn’t work.

I know, I know. We looked great for 6 weeks in 2022.

How did we look when it mattered? How did we look when we slowed down into patented Cal stall ball?

What we WANT is for the best rebounder in the country to be coached up to a level that he will help us win a National Championship.

What we will get (should Oscar return) is another Cal coached atrocity, with lackluster defense, poor spacing, and an early exit.

Point 2:

“We should stock up on wings and play 4 out in 2023-2024.”

Will Cal still be the coach next year?

Because if he is, and it looks like he will be, we are not going to play with 4 guards.

Bradshaw will be at the 4.

Lance Ware will get more minutes than we ever thought possible.

Justin Edwards will spend the vast majority of his time at the 3, no matter how much we think and believe that playing him at the 4 would be simultaneously fun to watch, and produce winning basketball.

It isn’t going to happen. Great players aren’t going to come here to sit on the bench. I wish I were wrong, but I really really don’t think I am. This isn’t my first go around with the Coach Cal Circus.

What’s the best we can hope for? A rim protecting big so that we have the best chance of success playing the way Cal likes to play.

Some shooting depth - hopefully less injury prone than our recent shooting depth.

It’s good to dream. I get it. I used to dream too. Then I woke up and realized that Cal will still be our coach next season.
Wow Aike, you pretty much summed up next’s years players and Cal’s plodding stall ball weave play that ends up with 25% shot clock violations. If Lance plays we are in trouble, guy shoots maybe 40% from the line because that is exceeding his range. I need a drink.

I do think it’s important to mention in this conversation that basketball has evolved and is a different game in 2023. And Cal has fought that evolution at every turn. He won’t accept the analytics that easily justify why you should take 20-30 3’s per game and not take ANY mid-range jumpers. That shooting has an outsized importance and value and that’s why the PF position is now often played by a shorter player who shoots really well but can rebound decent. Instead Cal wants a traditional PF who can’t hit a 3 if their life depends on it.

He rarely has players that can actually shoot and have the ball go in the basket.

Yeah, Oscar is a great player. Everyone should want him back. However, nobody wants or needs a situation where there's some tension and extra emotions because he or someone in his circle is in his ear about money.

I said this in another post. I'm all for making money. I'm not for over valuing and paying.

If Oscar had been instrumental in back-to-back final four runs, sure, back up the brinks truck, bring in Joe Craft and let's make a deal.

That's not the case. We don't have a conference title, and the NIT team lead by a walk on won about as many games.

You don't lose to St. Petersburgh and Kansas St then demand more. Not here. Sorry bud, you can take that AA and wave it around somewhere else, nobody around here is impressed.

Same goes for anyone else. If you think you're hot shit and want to be appeased and have to be enticed to stay at the University of Kentucky...hit the trail...go pro, go bounce around the portal and end up at a mid-major see if you even get minutes over a hungry 3 star. All the seniors from KHSAA All State and Sweet 16 all tourney team could manage 22 wins next year.

As for Cal.

The issue isn't his acumen, qualifications, ability to coach, etc...the issue is whether or not he's all in anymore.

I don't think he is. I think he's coasting. I don't say that as a knock but as an observation of reality. Dude has reached great heights and he's on the home stretch of his career with a nice golden parachute/Retirment. I'd be coasting to at this point.

See Bill Belichick..."ahhh f*ck it...let's have D coordinator and special teams coach run the offense..."...8 superbowls in...why not?

Cal is at a weird point in that he's at the tail end of essentially dominating a period of the game that evolved right into his wheelhouse but now it's evolving and transitioning into something else that's a bit out of his comfort zone.

There are a lot of things out of his control that he shouldn't be blamed for.

There are however some things in his control that he could do, but again, end of great career, iron clad contract, cush retirement...he's got his FFs, ring, and billions in NBA contracts...he's not auditioning anymore.

I personally would add one other thing…

“We should fill out our roster every year with 13. They should be high caliber recruits, or high caliber transfers from the portal.”

Will Cal be the coach next year?

The answer is yes, and the idea that he would ever use a full roster is laughable!! Take out the anomaly 2016 year, and his rotation has predominantly been a 6-7 man team…occasionally going up to a 8 man rotation, barring a injury or a game where we have had a massive foul problem. Posters get on here and want him to fill out our roster, but know he’ll never play 5-6 of a 13 man team. Then when said “not-playing” players transfer out, because the next year of potential one-and-done 5 stars are coming in, they get labeled as quitters, or that UK isn’t for everyone. And my question has always been to said posters…WHY SHOULD THEY STAY?? If Cal was recruiting national or local home-grown 2-3 stars, and he had any kind of a competent staff that was actually helping to improve these guys for Jr/Sr seasons, that would be one thing. But we haven’t “developed” many players at all during his tenure. There have been a few exceptions such as Nick Richards, but not many. Most fans want a full roster of 4-5 stars, or the best transfer portal players, to come in and be happy with 10 minutes. My answer to that has always been, evidently you’ve never played any kind of sports, because your desire for said sport pushes you to play, and not sit and be a cheerleader for Cal’s select 5-7 favorites.
