First they gave us the worst academic scandal in the history of college sports.
Then the womens' basketball coach was forced to resign. For a coach at that cesspool of a university to be forced out. It's got to be bad.
And now we find out. That their football players were being paid to play there.

If this isn't the very definition of a lack of institutional control, I don't know what is.

You know if their football players were being paid. How much more were the basketball players being paid?

ACC has widespread corruption and good luck getting espn to start seriously talking about it.

UNC football was punished pretty harshly for this one.

You and your stupid facts.

But I read Forde's article on this subject yesterday and he stated the NCAA won't look into this matter which means all the other football programs like Alabama, Michigan and Penn State will skate on this one.

Posters here don't want to believe this, but I keep telling everyone, that the NCAA doesn't want to punish anyone unless they absolutely are forced to.

Is this correct or a joke? What was the "harsh" punishment. By the way, there was selective reporting by the OP as North Carolina is not the featured and only program being mentioned in the attached article. How about Alabama as an example?

A combination of self imposed and NCAA imposed sanctions was vacating wins from two seasons, post season ban for a season, reduction of scholarships, and probation.

Yeah, all this came out about 7 years ago. The new stuff is the other programs (who won’t get anything of course).

I think its time for everyone to just realize college players have been getting paid for 30 years well at least all the top 50 or maybe even 100 recruits ......

This FBI stuff just pulled back the curtain to show everyone exactly what the sport has been for a long time. the NCAA has tried to keep a clean amateur appearance for a long time but in reality they've been ok with everything going on because their players can be paid but still keep their tax exempt status.

the ncaa can do whatever it wants and will. but they need to do away with these “student-athlete” commercials. it’s embarrassing at this point. them holding to their bs is almost as annoying as their selective enforcement.

Really? How long have you been watching college football?

Major college football and basketball is simply corrupt because of the money involved and because the NCAA has no credibility and punishes arbitrarily. Look at the transfer issues. Kids are transferring like free agents in the NFL or NBA but the kid transferring to be closer to his mom who recently had surgery for a brain tumor is denied eligibility. It makes zero sense.

Did you read the article?

North Carolina* fired Hatchell for abusing the players but let the men's basketball team off the hook for decades of fake classes. I guess certain people and certain programs can still cheat, it looks like men's basketball is their sacred cow.
As a not so minor token component of irony to go along with that theme, it should not be forgotten how Roy Williams became uncheat's head coach (reason why Matt Doherty was forced out).

UNC created a facade of poor treatment of the players by Doherty, but the truth was they were displeased with his results, a very institutional Legion of Doom of their own against Doherty. They widely publicized meetings with the players' families, and the negative feedback regarding Doherty's alleged heavy-handed approached to those "kids".

And then years later we learned the truth, about the real abuse of those players, of how they were being systematically denied any proper learning opportunities. Soft slavery at a minimum it was. Only to worsen (or improve if you are a unc fan), when Williams took over from Doherty.

That exchange in leadership, the phoney purpose given for it, the constructed use of the families of the players . . . very cowardly at a minimum. Had nothing to do with the best interest of anything but uncheat's phoney image.
