Absolutely not sarcasm. Most of those foreign NBA players did not come through the college route. Regardless. I am for making sure our universities support US athletes. If you don’t like that fine. But that is my opinion.
Racists? How many athletic scholarships to foreigners are going to non-Europeans? I have no data but can about guarantee this would hurt Europeans and Australians the most.
Besides, it’s a question worth asking, along the lines of H-1B visas: at what point do we ask why American institutions aren’t for Americans first?

If I go out and get players and say 8 are from American, who the hell are you to tell me who else I can't get? As long as they go through proper immigration channels, why do you care?
It is dumb, just like everything else going on in government these last 4 weeks. Another way to keep immigrants out of America.
What we need to see is doing away with scholarships for any kid that gets NIL. Why the hell do they get to double dip when that money can be used to help other kids get through college?

I think there was some exposé on Australian punters that was published in San Antonio’s newspaper recently so maybe this is fallout from that. Like they were misrepresenting their bios, claiming they hadn’t been to college when they had, something like that.
Who knows, most everything politicians do is for show. Probably won’t go anywhere.
He was way better than he showed while he was here. Since he did come here, I am not going to say we shouldn’t have done it. But, there are plenty of awesome athletes in the US. I don’t think we ‘Must” go out of the US to find them. If Pope decides to do it, I am still going to cheer for whoever is here.

Using 8 as a baseline, that would mean the majority or close to it of each major sport at a taxpayer sponsored public university would be foreign. You don’t think that’s worth caring about?

The “public” in public university is becoming more and more of a joke. State money allocated to the University of Kentucky is about 11% of the total budget now. The other 89% of revenue comes from tuition, fees, etc.
25 years ago, the state allocation made up 66% of the total budget for UK, so that allocation has gone down 55% in 25 years.
The idea that a university would be restricted on who they recruit because the state gives them 11% of their budget is laughable.

Right, but that’s not state money. You said tax payer sponsored public education, when in fact, only 11% of the university is funded through state taxes, helping to offset the cost of tuition and fees.
IMO, state lawmakers should be able to say what’s done with that 11%, but outside of that, I don’t think they should have a say with how the university spends its money, especially at a school like Kentucky where 0% of tax money is used to fund scholarships in the athletic department. If the athletic department received no state funding, why should the state be allowed to tell them how they allocate it?
It’s absurd to me to think that a university who only receives 11% of its funding from the state has to follow 100% of its rules.
We're sadly just wired that way at times. Negatively spreads faster than positivity 10:1. We are jus always ready to believe the worst.
That's not a fair example. CBB in the 90s is WAAAAAY different that it is now. So is the globe, for both good and bad.
There absolutely should be balance. But to limit how many guys I can get from overseas is just well, silly. If they want to come here and make a better life, go for it. That's what America is SUPPOSED to be about. Once upon a time Americans weren't afraid to compete and compete on a global stage.
Now, I do agree, Americans should be given fair shots. And if we're lacking, resources to help keep up. That's what makes us better as a country. There has sadly become a great deal of gatekeeping in this country. The other issue lies in companies not even giving Americans a fair shake, because, we know what we're worth. Companies just want to go straight to H1-Bs so they can hire foreign talent cheaper. And that talent may or may not be better than what we have here.
There’s a fine line here. Why do American kids have to not only compete with the kids at the next school, but with the kids at every school in the world? For scholarships, jobs, homes, a future?
