At least he admitted it.
That team was so reliant on 1 player to make shots that if he didn't-you got the product you did yesterday. Which is NOT basketball as it should be played and produced the worst pt total in the History of the NCAA Tournament for a #1 or #2 seed. Well done Vols--congrats "great" Rick Barnes.
All you need to know about Rick Barnes.....Evan Washburn mentioned at least 3 times "they were told to drive the ball and get to the paint and either drop off or kick out" and then you saw 1 pass shot jacking 6 straight possessions to the point Lappas was like "WTF......" and nicely said "You need to take Lanier out and help him regroup". When players either don't listen to the coach or refuse to listen, you have a guy who is holding a place and not in control. Seeing him scream at Ziegler early in the game was just another sign of the loss of control and lack of leadership he actually has within that program IMO.
Barnes is screwed when the game becomes about skill/making shots. His "leader" is a midget who would be a backup at a contending program but is celebrated for things that don't equate to actual value when skill is needed. Jamal Mashack will be an intriguing DE/TE prospect for the NFL-he is a worthless basketball player if he's not allowed to grab/hold. Justin Gainey is alright-most normal teams would've started him knowing they need skill in a big game against a tough 3 guard lineup. Barnes started an NFL prospect, a midget who can't shoot, a scorer who is relied on to make all their shots--a Euro who can't do anything in a real game, and Okpara.
Okpara was the Vols most impactful player yesterday. Barnes took him out for Cade Phillips and anyone who knows basketball knew yesterday wasn't going to be a Cade Phillips game. Rick Barnes didn't. This "celebration" of wanting him to make a Final Four or wanting Tennessee to is interesting kind of like the odd "Let's put John Chaney in the Tournament despite being 16-15 because he played a tough schedule and never won anything but practiced at 3 am because.....I don't know but he practiced at 3 am" and we'll all talk of how great it would be IF he made a Final Four".
The "Madness" within March Madness is often the "Shit Region" and it's filled with teams that really don't make you want to watch the sport. How many eyes were on UCLA/TN? That is a perfect description of the Region we get. 25 yrs ago it was the Dick Bennett Wisconsin team vs the Brian Cardinal led Purdue team in an Elite 8 game to go **** up the Final Four. Understand having all those type of teams in one region so they can't mess up the other 3-but at some point the object should be to make sure during the season these type of teams aren't rewarded for getting away with their BS and make them play on skill/within the rules instead of overlooking the rules and celebrating TV muscles and fouling.
