"Tai Wynyard gave an interview in New Zealand this week as he prepares to leave for the University of Kentucky.

Wynyard said it might be better for him to redshirt at this point but that decision has not been made.

“I’m still deciding whether I’ll redshirt or not…if I’ll play,” Wynyard said in a recent interview. “But I think it’ll be better for me to redshirt just because of the time I have to learn the plays and get into the system a lot easier.”

He also shared some things that his cousin Jack Salt has told him about basketball in the United States.

“My third cousin, Jack Salt, who plays in Virginia, said they’re big dudes that are really strong but they aren’t physical players, they don’t push people so hopefully I can go over and make an impact on that,” Wynyard said."

He will essentially be a sophomore next season. We all know the result when cal has sophomores.

He won't need 4 years anyways, 3 years at most before he's ready for the League with his body and skill set.

Play him.

We'll see. Cal will talk with him when he gets here. He can practice and they can make the decision on red-shirting later on.

Why not? lol.. Hell, Remember when Chane B'smoking was suspended and then brought back for the UK game, lost, then was dismissed the following day from the team?

If he can bang down low, grab 2-4 reb and not turn the ball over I say play the man!

Kinda surprised to hear him say this, when in other articles him and his coach have said that UK doesn't play physical enough and that he can definitely help us in that department.

I agree with those saying we should play him this season. We just don't have the luxury not to, I'm afraid, especially with the recent Poythress scare, and given our track record he's not going to need all 4 years so let's make the most of him while we've got him.

Imagine the reaction on here if we lose a tournament game due to being "out physical-ed" yet we've got this big body sitting on the bench twiddling his thumbs not available to play. He's 5 fouls and a physical presence if nothing else. He may not cure all that ails us, but he's at least worth a shot.

Our current production from the 5 spot is lacking. I think he can only help in that regard. 4 points and 2 rebounds is alot right now.

If his attributes are as I've heard--a physical tough banger down low--then good chance he'll play this year, especially if he can defend the post. Because that's EXACTLY what we've been needing and missing with Skal's charmin soft interior play.

That said, the people who think he'll make a big impact immediately are deluding themselves. It's gonna take a lot of practice time before he's learned the system and his role in it. If he makes a real impact, it probably won't be until February or March. Likely only garbage time for the next month or so.

Stomped a mud hole in Chuck Norris' arse.....Ulis then proceeded to walk it dry...

Cal said "let's put him in there and see what he can do," so I think that's means he won't be redshirting.

I guess he was talking about practice, but we'll soon see.

The ONLY reason for him to red shirt is if Cal watches him a few days in practice and it is clear he can't contribute -- a red shirt then would spare him embarrassment in New Zealand while he improves. All other reasons, including saving a year of eligibility, are meaningless.

With the loaded roster coming in next year he would be better served to get a jumpstart on playing time now. There is a good chance playing time will be sparce next year regardless.

Our need for him this year is much greater than it will be next year.

him being here will help Skal to get a lot tougher going against him in practice
whether he plays this year or not, it is still a huge plus for our team
just my preference, i want him to play this year
