Two ages of UK hoops coming together in one rare photo.

I get rival fans poo pooing it, because they have no idea what it feels like, but I don't get those rare UK fans who say things like "I really don't care if Cal gets a lot of guys to the league - college is all that matters". I mean, we all know Cal's success in college has been second to none -

but don't you get a thrill out of seeing half the world's best players coming from UK? And knowing that the next generation of stars after Cal retires will have only known an NBA where 1/3 of the All Star game was from UK? (again, by the time he's done this will likely be true)

Think about that. Michael Jordan boosted UNC's recruiting for decades after he and Dean left. Even Matt Doherty, their Gillispie, managed to recruit well.

So no, we won't be getting the top class every year necessarily, but kids will grow up thinking this is the norm and it can only help our next guy.

I'm glad that nearly all of our NBA cats seem to get along - Cal has done a fantastic job bringing back the older guys (including those he didn't coach).

I so badly wish Davis would exit stage left from the Pelicans. By the time he's 25 he will have every injury possible with that hell hole. I think Chicago could use another 23.

Great Thread. It's amazing the talent that has come thru UK over the last 6 years. Add Prince, Rondo, Meeks to that list and it's just special. Would be nice to see one with Bogans,Mohammed, and Magloire even though they are out of the league now

Good post. I completely agree. I've contended for a long time that it's more important to take the next elite OAD than to have guys return to the program for a second year. I feel this is important simply from a mathematical output. 40 NBA guys affiliated with UK trumps 20 NBA guys affiliated with the program. Even after Cal retires, I have no doubt that the next coach will continue to replicate the OAD system that has been established here (on some level). By then, and like you mentioned, it will seem like the normal thing to do at Kentucky.

The next coach will have Cal's blessing. He will also have the benefit of pointing to 40 giant-sized basketball cards of current NBA studs, 10 to 15 of whom will be max players; half of those being All-Stars at some point. Even without Cal, our program will continue to sell OAD and a fan-base that offers an accepting, basketball sanctuary mindset to elite talents, where we as fans are here for the players, and not the other way around. That type of success and atmosphere will recruit itself.

Terrific post jkwo! Cal is a visionary and what he meant by what he said at the 2010 draft is coming true. What will the people that say we don't get to know our players say about this?

just talked about that the other day with someone. the 2010 statement he made is kind of coming true. actually weird it's so scary. i mean we still refer to wall as the guy who kicked it off with the swag, and he will always be that to UK. and he refers to that himself even today, and even though he's made it as an nba all-star slam dunk champ etc. something very special happened in '09-'10 and uk's destiny must have touched us all because we were all high.

impossible as it may seem given their age wall, bledsoe, and cousins are three of the best players in their position in the nba. some how some way cal has basically been able to plateau on that initial success of '09-'10. i could not have predicted that honestly and i'm a raging homer. that's literally insane. cal will be the best coach in UK history if he retires here. rupp built it. but cal could crown it for all time.
