Stoops Post Game

I ain't gonna lie, I was worried early on that Leary might have a noodle arm. He looked a bit better today. I still don't have much confidence going forward that we can compete in conference this year. Having said that, the SEC appears to be WAY down this season.
That "noodle arm" threw the ball 65 yards in the air against Ball State.

I agree....just don't have it thru 2 games (and like last year....we came out with major flaws on offense). We won't win @USC, Tenn, UGA, Bama....and I'd argue at Miss st and at Vandy will be likely split. Just major bitterness at the Oline, Leary doesnt' look like he processes the field that fast and now the RB looks like a major mess.

Yeah, 9 and 3 is best case.

It's looking like we have a LONG season ahead of us. I can't see us winning more than 6-7 games and it PAINS ME to say that. We're going to have to have a HUGE turnaround to do better than that IMO.

Something is not right with this team. We bring in one of the top running backs in the SEC, the top QB transfer in the portal, return/bring in some highly rated WR's (we have about 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐), supposedly return a very good defense, better kicking game, and our offensive line has to be better than last year. Yet we look pretty mediocre so far.

Now 2 key players are injured (Brown and Davis). I haven't seen anything definitive on their status yet. Hopefully they aren't serious injuries and this team can flip a switch and start playing much better. I think we really need to play uptempo more. We looked much better the short time we did.

Yes, and Stoops lack of anger is concerning. Also, when a coach talks about how good the other team is and played, (even though they lost by 60 in their previous game) this is what you call coach speak. What he is really is saying is, we are not as good as I thought and I am not as sure now that I can fix these problems. This is the team I dealt myself.

Better than some of the ignorant comments about Leary "sucking", having a "noddle" arm, etc. Stupid sh*t.
Leary did suck the first game and first half. He misses way too many throws, is short and has too many balls batted down, and shown bad accuracy. I’m hoping it’s just rust and the second half is more like he will continue to play. The criticism was warranted though.

I
I mean if we go 9 and 3 three times n 6 seasons that's pretty solid.

I agree that'd probably as good as it gets tho8gh.
I’ll happily take that honestly. We won’t ever be at the top. I would however like to challenge 10 wins and the East like we have come close to a couple times and win some big games against a Georgia/UT/Bama more often. Seems like no matter how good we are we never cross that line.

My patience with Stoops is about gone . His job is to have his team prepared and physically we have all these tools -- Will L last year ,with Crod, This season a top notch QB transfer and a group of quality receivers , experience on D ... and mentally we look like " we so damn good all we have to do is show up " and for a half EKY embarrassed us . First series we need a simple QB sneak to keep drive alive .. false start .. false start on a damn QB. sneak . Then the punt block , the EKU runs thru us for a 7-0. lead ... then a totally boneheaded decision to go for it on 4th and 9 ????? WTH ... I love going for it to keep possession but that was a terrible time for it , Leary then gets creamed for a big loss .. entire half was mistake after mistake . Sorry but thats not what I expect from a veteran coach like Stoops .. his teams tend to match his demeanor , aloof and somewhat bipolar . I'm not going to expect too much going forward . You get to high with his teams you gonna get burnt .

Stoops is a top ten earning coach. His team's, if you go back and research prior seasons, have at least one of these performances a year against a weak opponent. I don't think any other top ten earning coaches has that statistic on his resume. I never agreed with giving him another raise (8.6 mil per). That's more than Jim Harbaugh, James Franklin, Lane Kiffen to name a few. I don't know how much more UK is willing to pay a 7 win coach, but Stoops is closing in on coaches that have won multiple championships.

We all know that Barnhart will accept mediocrity so long as the hype and hope are always there. (Translated i.e. ticket sales)

Honestly, I wouldn't be as frustrated if we weren't paying him so damn much....

Stoops is as ready as we are to take the next step. We just seem to walk right up to that line and then fall back.
I’m just hoping that’s the stinker game we tend to throw out there every year at least once. EKU gave us fits the last time we played. This game was almost identical to the 2017 game down to the final score. We won that one 27-16. There’s going to be better days ahead but we have one more crack at putting all the pieces together and cleaning up the dumb mistakes and penalties before the competition level takes a big step up.

Actually he seemed relatively positive regarding the team. “Complementary football” is the new buzzword. And of course he talked up EKU like they are a formidable power.
Like EKU didn’t just get pummeled by a bad Cinci team 66-13 last week. 😂 what a joke.

Yesterday was a terrible showing, but I swear some UK fans just relish being miserable. The hippie's cure-all rolling out in 2025 can't come quickly enough for everyone who's an O/T loss away from a stroke. 😂
Truer words never spoken.

Look at this from the standpoint of coaching staff. White, Coen, Marrow, Boulware, Stewart, and Mike are recruiting and teaching well. Buffano is teaching the safeties and recently got a recruiting win in St Louis. Collins is recruiting well but his corners have not played well this month. Woodward is recruiting okay but his receivers are blowing some routes and dropping some passes. Yenser is not recruiting much and not getting great results from the OL. We can see which coaches form the core and which coaches are on the spot. This impacts the whole team because one blown blocking assignment screws up a play call and one blown coverage gives up a chunk play. The next two weeks against Akron and the Dores provide a chance for our staff to show what they can do as problem solvers. There will be implications.

Not going 9-3.
I agree. Based on what we've seen, so far, it is unreasonable to think we can go 9-3.
Having said that, major improvement is certainly possible and will have to happen to have a satisfactory year. It is unclear to me just how good we can be. It may well be that we will not know until after the Florida game, assuming we are 4-0 going into it. Vandy will be laying in the weeds, waiting for us. That is guaranteed.

GO CATS !!!

This goes back to what many have said for a good while now about Stoops. He really does have the best contract and job in college football. KY Football's past history has been so bad that just being a mediocre SEC program exceeds historical standards. The majority of the fanbase are programmed into thinking anything above 7 wins is a great season because it is based on historical results. He can win the offseason hype machine every year, win 7-8 games, lose to the best teams on the schedule and play in ok bowl games and the administration and fanbase will love him. At places like Bama etc he would be fired. At KY, he makes almost $9M per year with minimal heat. That is why he has the best job in college football.

It really irks me the coach hangs outside the team huddles so often and lets the coordinators do their thing . If I'm the head coach yesterday I'm in there raising the roof ... and I mean early on in that game .

Am afraid he has capped out....This is, for the most part, the best it's going to be under Stoops.... No creativity, etc.

And, oh, BTW, our OL coach should have been fired last year.....
You mean never should've been HIRED

Mertz at UF looks better than Leary.....we should've taken Mertz

Wonder why the DL is so bad? I thought this was supposed to be our best defense under stoops. Lol.
We are basically playing 5 on three or 6 on 4 every snap.

Walker and one other DL are double teamed on every snap while we have 7-8 lbs and dbs falling back in a prevent zone and never covering anyone.

The few times Wallace is ALLOWED to blitz, he almost always disrupts the play in a big way.

JJ couldn't get to QB unless he is totally unblocked and sometimes not even then. Too slow.

I freaking hate our defensive scheme and game plan.

Weaver should be in the NFL by now, imo. Wallace will be playing on sundays for sure.

People used to bitch and whine that stoops put his input in too much, and you're saying he doesn't do it enough now?

Don't put words in my mouth I didnt say .. I've NEVER said Stoops had too much input . I said I dont like him standing outside team huddles during time outs . Esp. when we are playing poorly -- get in there and rip some butt to get the team focused .

I feel you, but that ship has sailed. No longer any pressure on HC as he has one of those "lifetime" contracts like CCC has. I wish he and whoever his current/next OC is would learn that there are no goal post on the sidelines. They run N/S.

Stoops has UK at 7-10 win level. I'm having a hard time seeing him ever put together a special season with 11-12 wins. The first two games have been beyond disappointing.

I'm hoping that Penn State Citrus Bowl win wasn't the high-water mark of his tenure here.
That team was stacked with 2 and 3 star talents that panned out better than anyone expected.
SEC expansion makes it harder.
Gotta hope Cutter is a special talent.

Oh calm down Mr pissy pants. I was talking about in general the fan base when all Eddie Gran wanted to do was run the ball... fans were like that's what stoops wants he likes to run the ball and play defense. Then when Liam was hired both times everyone was like I hope mark stoops stays out of it and let's Liam do his thing it's just odd to hear anyone say he needs more input after seeing so many people repeatedly say he needs a lot less.

Now pull your panties out before you get a chafe.

Reading responses on this site, you would think UK is 0-2. In fairness, UK has a new quarterback, new running back, and basically a new offensive line playing together for the first time. It's obvious they have a lot to fix, offense and defense and this old man thinks they will.

We do, and I think they will, too. I expected better performances, but what I care about is Ws and SEC play.

Sensitive much ? lol

My question is why isn’t the o line better? IMO it’s a change in philosophy. It doesn’t look like they are trying to drive teams backwards. Instead they are trying to create stalemates and allow the back to pick a gap. It’s not working. The line doesn’t know where the back is going so there’s no aggression at the point of attack.
