Offense was offensive....no other way to put it. Continuing story of "can't run block and pass block." How can we struggle with run blocking so much at this point in the season? Big Blue Wall looks more like a Big Blue folding chair. Our QB isn't healthy enough to maneuver (see pass blocking note above) nor savvy enough in the pocket to throw the ball away when pressure comes and everyone is covered. It looked like UT had 18 defenders on the field as we were swarmed all night. Levis does not appear to be improving in pocket presence or accuracy (QBR of 16.4). He is stuck on "has all the physical tools" and that is all. To be fair....we haven't protected him worth a fiddler's d@mn this year (see pass blocking note above). We compiled 205 total yards and scored 6....'nuff said.
Special teams requires special treatment. There is NO excuse for missing PATs throughout the year. Once, our punter had a defender come unabated to him....right off tackle and he barely got a bad punt off. We were never in a position to try a FG and that may be the best news on the night for this phase of the game. ST has looked like the dog's breakfast all year long.
Defense: I like our D on the whole this season, but when playing an elite QB....bend-don't-break and lack of pressure (blitz) on the QB for 60 minutes is a recipe for disaster and we had a heaping helping of disaster last night. We looked "surprised" UT would run tempo (SMH). What did we do for two weeks in preparation for Hooker & Co? Whatever it was, do something else in practice this week.
The only good thing I saw were a couple of instances of good, one-on-one open field tackles.
If football is blocking and tackling, we're proficient in less than 50% of the game because we can't run or pass block on O; pressure the QB on D; nor protect the kicking game on ST. These are fundamentals where Stoops' teams are normally strong. We have fatal flaws in all three phases of the game.
GBB!
