Stoops Post Game

Wish someone would go back the last 4-5 years and figure out how many cheap scores we’ve given up within the last two minutes before halftime.
Been a bunch of them. but Brown knows better to than to get out of bounds in that instant. We are playing for the 2nd half. He has been playing football for awhile so it sickened me to hear the announcer say freshman mistake

I feel like the talent is there. This offensive scheme is just not good. So bad in fact that the last time it was used it was last in every major category and NFL statistic. I think I have said it 1000 times today. If he was a good coordinator, then he would have kept his OC position 3 years ago. This is Apple to oranges when compared to Coen. Coen was unproven and it worked out for him. Scang had his chance in the league as a coordinator and it was complete disaster. He came in for an interview and wowed stoops with his QB knowledge. But having knowledge doesn’t equal out to being a good play caller.
I don’t want to admit it, but this is spot on. Scang just isn’t getting it done. The offense has digressed to pre-Coen days. We threw for 90 yards last night with a QB that is high on NFL draft boards, a TE room that supposedly has 4 or 5 NFL players, a WR room that Stoops has said has a couple that will play on Sundays and a RB that is among the all time greats at RB in UK history. The O skill players as a group are among the best we have ever had. This tells me the O-line must be historically bad or the O Coordinate Coordinator isn’t getting it done.

What was more frustrating was that Stoops didn't even try to put points on the board at the end of the half. He never does.

The receiver ran the route and was open for a split second, the ball was there...it hit both hands and body and he couldn't hold on. Should have been caught....period.
The fact is, even if he holds onto the ball, were still short of the first down by several yards. It was 3rd and 8 or 9 and all our receivers ran 4 yard patterns. Makes no sense at all.

Exactly. Even if he holds on to that ball it’s an insignificant gain.

Its really frustrating when we had two weeks to prepare for this game and this was the best product we could put on the field. Special teams have been a bust all year I expect it every game now. Scrang was supposed to be a seamless transition from Liam to him. I am pretty much sold on the fact Eddie's offense was better. He didn't even have near the QBs we have now. Defense has been good but last night we looked like we were scared to death and hadn't done anything to prepare for that offense. If it wasn't for just healing from injuries having a bye week is pointless and usually a loss.

and yet every time we have the ball 2 minutes to go before the half with three TO's left, our coach takes a knee and runs to the locker room.

This all day. Same as I’ve been shouting from the rooftops. Scang was a failed NFL OC or at best a mediocre….

Coen was a young innovative bright mind looking for a chance.

Typically when you start hiring re-treads it doesn’t pan out.

I say rip the bandaid now and give playcalling duties to Coach Woody and tell him to call it like Coen would and use the rest of the season as a job interview

I wasn't a Gran fan, but now we have reverted to a system that rarely works without superior talent. Coen figured out real quick that couldn't just run standard pro set all the time. Levis scrambling ability was a weapon last year and Scang has all but shut that down. He was terrible in Denver and was let go about as soon as he got there. San Francisco had mediocre QB play and the offensive side of the ball was a liability. Why we would go that route was obviously a buddy system hire.

Offense was offensive....no other way to put it. Continuing story of "can't run block and pass block." How can we struggle with run blocking so much at this point in the season? Big Blue Wall looks more like a Big Blue folding chair. Our QB isn't healthy enough to maneuver (see pass blocking note above) nor savvy enough in the pocket to throw the ball away when pressure comes and everyone is covered. It looked like UT had 18 defenders on the field as we were swarmed all night. Levis does not appear to be improving in pocket presence or accuracy (QBR of 16.4). He is stuck on "has all the physical tools" and that is all. To be fair....we haven't protected him worth a fiddler's d@mn this year (see pass blocking note above). We compiled 205 total yards and scored 6....'nuff said.

Special teams requires special treatment. There is NO excuse for missing PATs throughout the year. Once, our punter had a defender come unabated to him....right off tackle and he barely got a bad punt off. We were never in a position to try a FG and that may be the best news on the night for this phase of the game. ST has looked like the dog's breakfast all year long.

Defense: I like our D on the whole this season, but when playing an elite QB....bend-don't-break and lack of pressure (blitz) on the QB for 60 minutes is a recipe for disaster and we had a heaping helping of disaster last night. We looked "surprised" UT would run tempo (SMH). What did we do for two weeks in preparation for Hooker & Co? Whatever it was, do something else in practice this week.

The only good thing I saw were a couple of instances of good, one-on-one open field tackles.

If football is blocking and tackling, we're proficient in less than 50% of the game because we can't run or pass block on O; pressure the QB on D; nor protect the kicking game on ST. These are fundamentals where Stoops' teams are normally strong. We have fatal flaws in all three phases of the game.

GBB!
UT really did play with a lot more energy that we did especially on the defensive side of the ball. I thought the same thing you did and thats, "Man those guys are swarming us".

But you know thats one of the by products of that comes with playing with Tempo or lack of tempo. The very first advantage playing fast and aggressive does for you on either side of the ball is it gives your guys an adrenaline shot of energy and lets them play free and lose and athletic. When we sludge around and wait 30 seconds to snap it our guys lose any rythm and energy and the defense digs in frothing at the mouth to attack. One side is leaning forward and the other side is on their heels. The side on their toes plays fast and loose and the ones on their heels plays slow because they are naturally more timid on their heels.

So they did that to us on both sides of the ball. Their offense kept us on our heels on defense and their defense kept our offense on our heels too.

I hate gimmicky hurry up and snap football because it turns the sport into a clown show, but I'm all for natural tempo pace of play on offense even if you'r just running the ball. And I'm always for aggressiveness on Defense for the same reasons, it creates energy for us and takes away energy and aggression for them.
