“Coach Pope’s playing style over the past couple of years at BYU is definitely intriguing,” Stojakovic told KSR+. “Just playing fast and being able to shoot a lot is something that speaks to me. … It’ll definitely be exciting to see what Coach Pope can do for the program. I don’t know much. I’ve never been to the state of Kentucky, but I’ve heard a bunch of great things about the fanbase.”

Yeah, the issue with these threads and the posts they're based on is that it's hard to know what to believe and what to take with a grain of salt with some of these quotes. He sounds interested in UK and specifically in Pope's offense. A wing shooter should love the thought of playing in that offense. It's a dream for a shooter. But this really isn't anything new or different than what we heard earlier today. "Kentucky is heavily involved" is the same exact quote. As I've been saying, I can't follow this recruiting very closely right now. It's a roller coaster on the emotions of a bunch of kids who don't know what they're doing and are very fickle. They've got a bunch of people whispering in their ears and they don't know who to listen to, so the result is that they're all over the place. Check back in 15 minutes from now and it will change. I can't ride that roller coaster.

Well he needs to stay away from this message board if he wants to keep that perception of UK fans.

His free throw percentage was horrible, which to me is a huge red flag. When is the last time you seen a great shooter have a bad free throw percentage?
That’s really odd honestly, his father was a knockdown shooter and he was known as one in HS. Very strange.

Take heed that no misinformed reporter deceive you, 🤣

I think he is a lot better than his FR year stats. Lots of players struggle their FR year and then turn it around. To use a baseball phrase, he was in a big SLUMP. But he was known as a good shooter. The FTs says to me it was mostly mental/pshychological. Yeah, it's enough of a concern to not want him to be "The GUY" or to even be an expected starter. It's a fresh start for him, so come in expected to be a contributor off the bench for a team expected to go 9-10 deep, and hopefully fulfill his McD AA expectations and either work his way up to starting (if someone else struggles) or put himself to be in position to be one of our top 3-4 "key" guys the following year.

It seems to me that we have not done well with West cost players over the years. I trust Pope on this as he knows more about players than we do. Hopefully we will start hearing about some commitments soon.

I just don't want players that can't shoot

Briscoe, Hagans, Wheeler, Wagner

We've seen enough of that, it always hinders the offense
He is known to be a shooter who just had a down FR year. Bogans sucked ass as a JR; Prince and Mashburn didn’t shoot well as FR; I saw with my very own eyes several times in Seaton Center gym McCarty practicing 3’s and he was atrocious at it.

Freshmen numbers are not always a perfect indicator of future success as we know. Many folks flame DJ for his freshmen numbers and most on this board do not want DJ back because of them. I know expectations were high for DJ, but wherever he ends up (Arky I am sure) he has a real chance to break out (partially depending on the BradCal Offense). Stojakovic would have a real chance to do the same by switching systems and seems to fit what Pope has ran in the past. Would love for him to be a Wildcat.

That said, 52.8 FT% is atrocious for a G. That is Shaq-esque.

Joe Crawford - freshman year

One free throw a game isn't a great sample size to go by.
In HS Stojakovic's FT lines were:

  • 20-21 So. 62 FTA 52 FTM 84 FT%
  • 21-22 Jr. 144 FTA 112 FTM 78 FT%
  • 22-23 Sr. 102 FTA 80 FTM 78 FT%
  • Total 308 FTA 244 FTM 79 FT%
FT Defense does not change from HS to College. Only the pressure and atmosphere does.

I would take a Bricoe all day every day and twice on Sundays. Do you actually know he played out of position ? the dude was 6-3 playing the 3 and 4. He was going up against players giving up a lot of size. he played his ass off and did the very best he could with hi assignment. he averaged 12.1 points / 5.4 rebounds / 4.2 assist per game. he was a horrible 3 point shooter, but he shot over 50% from the field on 2's. He worked hard at getting in the lane against bigger players and finishing. Not every player on the team will be 3 point specialist, you HAVE to have the guys who will do the dirty work, and Briscoe was exactly that, a tough as hell, gritty player that gave MAX effort every minute he was on the floor. Go back and look to try and find a player who put up the numbers he did (scoring / rebounding / assist). Teams played off of him because he couldn't shoot, and he still found ways to score, but also shared the ball. Solid defender also. What hindered the teams he played on offense was they didn't have a 3 or 4 and Briscoe had to play out of position.

if you want to win championships its hard to do with a guard who cant shoot.
That's why John Wall has never won anything

Rondo being the biggest exception that comes to mind

Does he have to have 5 star talent?

After watching an accountant light us up, I'd say no.

Those are really good stats to see... definitely seems to indicate the poor FT shooting his FR year is the outlier.

You should’ve stopped at bold take.

You weakened your joke with the second sentence. We still would’ve gotten it without the unnecessary explanation.

I like the second sentence... as long as you read it like a Jim Gaffigan sarcastic second sentence as opposed to a real explanation.

You know, cause the only the better than a little dad joke/sarcasm, it's making it over the top by explaining it to further ridicule your audience. 🤣
