St. Johns Fans Can't Feel Great About Slice Right Now

Which adds to the frustration of coming so close and not bringing home the title. I think years after Cal is gone more people will be saying "gosh with all that talent we only won one title" as opposed to saying "gosh what an incredible run of final fours we had with Cal". Sucks, but thats how it goes.

Look at Pitino. Many people say, we had such a great run, but more people say "we should have won 3 in a row"

So you obviously don't think he wins another at UK.

I disagree.

Also, this has been discussed ad nauseum, but to have expected Cal to win any more titles than he has so far would require an expectation of winning it all at least 33% of the time. Adolph Rupp only won it 10% of the time.

Cal WILL win it again before he's done at Kentucky.

As for Slice? He's overrated. He wasn't bringing in 5 stars for Dixon at Pitt and he won't be doing it at St. Johns for Mullen.

They don't need Chris Mullin to win games. Look at Steve Lavin. Mediocre coach in a previous bigger job. He immediately brought a higher profile back to St. John's and got recruits. They are in New York City, Chris Mullin is an NBA Hall of Famer and they have tons of history.

What plagued Lavin is he didn't ever build a team. Off the court issues and the fact that he can't really coach all that great was his downfall.

I think you have given "he's not done" two meanings in two posts. Your original post was in response to mine having said "gosh with all that talent we only won 1 title". Your rebuttal was "he's not done yet".

That isn't my quote or rebuttal, no clue why you have that in quotation marks. I said "Cal is not done", meaning he's not done coaching. I have no clue what the hell you are talking about. I have no clue if he'll win again or not, and neither do you. He's not done. Wait until he's done if you want to bitch about him "only" going to final fours 80% of our seasons. Everything else is you just pulling stuff out of your ass, so not really worth talking about. Guess we'll see here in about 5 years.

We took a huge hit when O left, but that's what you coach at UK for........to get your own program.
Slice was never that type of coach, and the same can now be said for Robic.

UK is UK with or without Slice; his move only possibly mattered when we were in on a recruit or 2 in the Northeast.

Just where have you been, Most everyone that was in sports said that Kentucky couldn't win with all of these Frs.. So Coach Cal made them eat there words and you trying your best to discrediting him.
You must be BCG fan!!

Saying Cal is done getting another title is such a laughably dumb statement, I don't even know where to start.

Winning a title is affected by so many different things, many of which are outside of a coaches control. All you can do is put the best team on the floor, hope you don't get hosed in the brackets, and pray the ball bounces your way a few times. I don't think Calhoun is a better coach than Cal, and certainly not Ollie.. Uconn just had a lot of lucky bounces in recent years (2004 notwithstanding).

Not to mention, if you think Cal is "done winning a title", who could you possibly think IS going to win? You're counting out the most successful tournament coach of the last 6 years? Don't bet with my money. If you count Calipari out if it, you might as well count out everyone else. And yes, that includes your boy Coach K.

If you ask any coach about what it takes to win it all most honest coaches will mention several factors of which luck is one of them. But luck is also partly the element of design. (example: a coach drawing up a tough play that his team ultimately executes to achieve the victory.)

Two of the best building jobs in College Basketball that I have ever seen was Jim Calhoun at Connecticut and John Calipari at Massachusetts. John wasn't at UMASS as long but that was a great achievement in getting them to the 96 Final Four and raising their national profile like he did. Calhoun though in taking UCONN from where they were to not only their first ever Final Four in 1999 but to ultimately 3 National Championships in four FF trips is just remarkable. I loathe him, I think he's a sneaky SOB, and if it weren't for him Kentucky would have 10 NCAA titles and Duke would have 7 right now. But he was tough and he found many kids not ranked among the Mickey D realm who became star players in College. Shot blocking and rebounding where what his teams became known for which always made them a formidable foe. His program didn't always have the consistency (ie occasionally having a down year in missing the NCAA'S) but he found a way to get it done on the grand stage time and time again. I was pleased when his loaded 2006 team with Rudy Gay and Co. was upset by George Mason in the elite 8 as the National Media had about crowned the Huskies with another title.

I won't compare the two because Cal's journey is still in progress but as much as it kills me to say it, that SOB Calhoun, while maybe not on the Mt. Rushmore of coaches, he is right there at the base of that mountain with full climbing gear on.

Adolph Rupp won it around give or take 12% of the time. The NCAA Tournament did not exist until 1939. Further, Kentucky did not compete in either the 1953 or 1954 NCAA Tournaments, due to a corrupt NCAA. Not much has changed.

If Coach Cal stays here 15 years, a new arena will be named after him. That all I can say.
