He helped steer St. Johns priority, Briscoe, to UK.
Diallo to St. Johns was supposed to be a given with Slice, but didn't turn out that way.
And former Pitt commit Heron (recruited by Slice) just chose Auburn.

I think Slice made big mistake when he lift Kentucky.

I think many were worried about losing his recruiting. That was always a silly concern. Cal is and will always be the main draw to our recruiting success. I don't think it matters a whole lot who our assistant coaches are. I'm sure some are better than others, but with Cal as head coach, recruiting will never be a problem. St john fans were probably looking at our recruiting classes and expecting some of that type of success, but, they don't have Cal and we do.

Chris Mullin is an unknown quantity as a coach. In time, they'll get some players.

Just goes to show how competitive the recruiting landscape is out there. The fact that Calipari has been able to bring so much talent to Lexington is mindboggling, especially given the realities of how school history doesn't play nearly the same role it used to.

Going to be a long road for St. Johns to get back as one of the top team if ever.

Indeed, especially if Ollie continues to prove himself at UConn and if Boeheim's replacement is semi-elite (which I think he will be). Then you have the resurgence of Maryland as well as a consistently-formidable Villanova program. After all of that, you have the elite schools like UK and Duke who are annually raiding the northeast for potential talent. St. John's is going to have to bully its way onto the northeast recruiting front. Not an easy task.

I was never a fan of slice, and I said it then. He never seemed like UK material, and due to his friendship with Cal most overrated him. I'm glad he's gone, and don't feel a bit torn saying it. Comparing him to Antigua is as hilarious now as it was then.

As much as Id like to agree with you, that just isnt completely true. The name does mean youll always be in the mix, and youll get a few here and there. But the coach along with the name is what makes the difference.

Just look at Tubby and BCG.

Both tubby and BCG recruited at UK better than anywhere else. For tubby UK actually made his recruiting name. The name UK does a lot of the talking even though people don't seem to understand just how much. The coach matters, the school matters, and you need both to make it work. But the name on the front sets the table.

Honestly, I think he rode the coattails of Cal and because of the name Mullins, St John's was supposed to be some power to be again on this site. I never heard of Slice before he came to UK. Probably a reason for that.

Which adds to the frustration of coming so close and not bringing home the title. I think years after Cal is gone more people will be saying "gosh with all that talent we only won one title" as opposed to saying "gosh what an incredible run of final fours we had with Cal". Sucks, but thats how it goes.

Look at Pitino. Many people say, we had such a great run, but more people say "we should have won 3 in a row"

Slice wasn't the ace recruiter he was billed up to be, in fact to me he was a big step down from what we did have.

The thing that Slice had was strong connections in the Northeast...those won't always land you recruits, just get your foot in the door and in the mix. It's up to the head coach to close the deal.

St. Johns is still St. Johns...KU is not going to lose a recruit to them in most situations. Same goes for UK/Briscoe (who I think committed before Slice left).

There is a reason Cal brought Slice here, so who am I (or any of you donkeys) to argue the value he brings to a program. UK is a coveted staff, you think Cal will fill it with someone who can't do an elite job?

No they don't.

And Calipari is not done.

And I don't hear too many UNC fans talking about how poorly or frustrating the Dean Smith years were at UNC.

I think he is done. But thats my opinion. You say he's not, I say he is. Guess we will find out. Hope Im wrong.

First, I'd never leave UK for another assistant job. However, he did.
Second, teaming up with Chris Mullin (a school/NBA legend), one of his best friends, was obviously more than just basketball.
Third, among local boys, there's always an allure of making St. John's a college power. It may never happen, but there's a certain mystique about trying and you would be legendary (more so than you would ever get as an assistant at UK) if you succeed.

I think Cal will probably win 2 or 3 at UK.

I still believe Cal had the potential to put together 4 or 5 though, as hard as it is to do. He was close to top 3 all time IMO.

But I've got some high expectations, in case it wasn't noticed.

I don't think you need a link from Cal to prove slice wasnt a huge factor here. No one is questioning Cal. I don't question the hire, because I don't know the intent. These coaches do things for lots of differing reasons.

I didn't like slice, from a fans perspective, from the start. I didn't get a sense he was ever comfortable, and I never though of him as a guy that would be here that long. The crazier part is, he wasn't here long enough to skip rocks down the Cumberland, so the point remains.

You think he's retiring right now? I don't understand. When I said he's not done I meant he's not done coaching Kentucky. We have a top 3 team next year and we'll probably have another top 10 team the year after. Not sure I'm following your whole "he's done" thing.

St. John's fans don't spend time fretting over summer recruiting news the way UK fans do. Not only are they not upset with slice yet, I doubt most even know the names of the assistant coaches.

Saying Cal is done getting another title is such a laughably dumb statement, I don't even know where to start.

Winning a title is affected by so many different things, many of which are outside of a coaches control. All you can do is put the best team on the floor, hope you don't get hosed in the brackets, and pray the ball bounces your way a few times. I don't think Calhoun is a better coach than Cal, and certainly not Ollie.. Uconn just had a lot of lucky bounces in recent years (2004 notwithstanding).

Not to mention, if you think Cal is "done winning a title", who could you possibly think IS going to win? You're counting out the most successful tournament coach of the last 6 years? Don't bet with my money. If you count Calipari out if it, you might as well count out everyone else. And yes, that includes your boy Coach K.

I can't fathom how CUT-NETS is able to trick posters time and time again.. even otherwise smart, knowledgeable posters.

He's a Duke fan and a troll..

Next time look at his profile and think "Man, that dude isn't making sense, and for some reason he has a avatar of Tom Cruise looking at me very seductively like he wants to suc... OH THAT'S THE DUKE FAN!"

I think you have given "he's not done" two meanings in two posts. Your original post was in response to mine having said "gosh with all that talent we only won 1 title". Your rebuttal was "he's not done yet". I took that in the context of, "He's not done yet and will win another title". Obviously I know he's not done coaching. You made the reference as if he will definitely win another title because he's not done coaching yet. So I responded by saying "I think he's done". Translation: I don't think he'll win another title. In my opinion he gets too tight and holds them back and its to the detriment of the team. He gave away the championship at Memphis with Rose to KU and damn near did it again in 2012 before MKG makes the big hustle play.

Again, I desperately hope Im wrong because it means we will have won another title. Which make no mistake, this thing is about winning titles. Anyone who says it isn't is a loser.
