Simmons , Newman , Zimmerman

I look at it a little differently.

By simply choosing to go to those programs instead of playing for UK under Cal, they pretty much showed that they lacked the stones to handle the spotlight that comes from playing here.

As Cal says all of the time, UK isn't for everyone.

My only issue with their decisions is that they just seem like incredibly dangerous moves for their careers.

I think it's the opposite. Not every 5-star kid who goes to a big school has their NBA stock turn to gold. I look at it more of...why wouldn't you want a great shot at winning a title, playing deep in the NCAA Tournament and going to a crazy basketball atmosphere for your year or two in college?

These kids are in the spotlight their whole high school career. They play in numerous televised all star games, play in front of pro and college scouts and in big event venues.

Sadly, while I agree 100%, I doubt this changes much. Some kids think they are the best in the world, their parents think they are the best in the world. Some will continue to think they can take control of the game, on their own, and win games. You can't change that mentality in an 17 year old, who, for his entire life was far-and-away the best player in his area. If they don't want to be apart of a "team", sharing the ball and playing off each other, not much is going to change that.

TBH, I'm fine with it.. let the me-first players go elsewhere. Not necessarily saying those 3 players are me-first.. but that mentality does exist, and it would be very detrimental to a team trying to actually do something on the college landscape.

Brown, zimm, whomever may have the Maserati, riches in general but there will come a time at the end of their careers when they haven't won anything and then it hits them. Seen other interviews of great NBA players echo just that.

Yes Simmons' Godfather is there, but Newman and Zimmerman stayed home to play.

I dont disagree that they were bad career decisions, Simmons was #1 regardless.

After witnessing all of the vitriol on the football board over good players leaving the state to play at powerhouses, I'm not going to disparage a kid for staying home.

Way different story. Harris was going to start day 1 at UK. He would have been the piece to turn the program around too. UK fans also care an awful lot about football.

He's not going to even play much at Alabama u less injuries happen until his junior year. Maybe longer. He's already being recruited over IMO. A bunch of my bamer friends thinks he might even consider transferring if it keeps happening.

Zimmerman and Newman would have started here day 1, and been huge pieces.

I always love the "want to be close to home" excuse for ONE year college kids. Lol. I mean, are you going. To demand to be drafted by your home team too? Let mama go son, time to grow up.

Not in my opinion.

He was the number 1 back in America, why wouldn't he think he could play anywhere?

These kids have incredible confidence.

This whole philosophy of being a stepping stone to turn around a crap program versus winning titles and receiving much more attention is relevant to both sports.

You think these bball players are not handed that line?

You think this didnt come up with Newman or Zimmerman?

For some reason we UK fans think it is so dumb for a kid to stay home when they could play for the best basketball program, with the best facilities, the most media, one of the best coaches, and the opportunity for a title every year.

Yet we say it is much different for a Number 1 ranked football recruit to go to Bama with Saban instead of staying home?

Yet it is easier for one super star player to revive a bball program than one player to revive a football program.

We have had two number 1 in the nation football recruits at UK, Tim Couch and Dennis Johnson.

And...?

I want the football team to be as good as possible and in order to do so we need the best players.

That said, as a UK bball fan as well, I fully understand kids going to top programs.

We just need to convince everyone that Newman was better than Murray in HS. Perception is everything.

Now one is a lottery pick, and the other may not get drafted in the 2nd round. Mississippi State? ?? [laughing]
