SIAP: Thon Maker plans to enroll second semester

I think it gives him less chance to get exposed. If he doesn't perform well next year, his camp can point to the fact that he was a summer/semester behind. I haven't been impressed at all out of what I've seen from him and someone recently said that he was a workout wonder. Looks unbelievable when its 1 on 0, but put him in a game and he is very underwhelming.

yea, and where is ASU coming from? I get that Hurley is the new coach, but ASU is merely a destination party school and nothing more.

I know a lot of good men who threw away very promising careers (in both sport and business) by partying too much with the dimepieces at ASU.

It's somewhere that he can go and stuff the stat sheet and stay under the radar. If he's serious about getting better as a big man then Calipari is the only way to go, IMO. He's the best at maximizing the talents of long shot-blocker types and preparing them for the league. Right now Thon has not lived up to his talents and looks like a guy that should plan on staying in college a few years (especially with Cal) if he wants to get better. Question becomes is developing him really worth putting up with the potential distraction and sideshow.

For some reason I get the impression that Cal might have backed off a bit due to all the indecisiveness and uncertainty from the Maker camp.

I can't see much benefit in taking Maker for 3 months.

If he is only going to play the 2nd semester, he is one of those who will be drafted solely on potential. Whoever drafts him will be waiting on him to mature, physically, and get stronger.

Why would he bother? If he's almost assuredly going to be one and done regardless of where his draft stock is, why not just prep the entire year and let teams draft you based on the mystery?

He's definitely not where everyone expected him to be as a prospect, but that upside is still freaky good. If he wanted to join second semester and then stay for a second year, he could be an All-American.

But if he's just going to show up, expect to join a rotation that's already established and cohesive, and bolt, I question how much he or the team he chooses would get out of the process. If you're Jahlil Okafor, that's one thing. If you're a raw prospect, it's a different animal.

Sounds like hes interested in going somewhere to just coast until the draft. Sounds less and less like UK is his destination. Probably another reason we turned up the heat in pursuit of Diallo.

There is a chance Tai Wynward plays for us during the second half.I actually think he could give us more than Maker.

Agree, with Wynward having an option to come in this spring, I can't see Cal taking on Maker as well. I guess he could if we don't end up with a full roster, or we're still thin up front.
We had no slot for Jarnell Stokes, so things might be different this time around.
And of course, Maker could possibly hang around for another season? Maker shows at bottom of Round 1 right now on nbadraft.net and draftexpress.

Maker reminds me of Durant. I don't know how much post position he plays, seems to play on the wing more. But, three months, one month I'll take him. With him and Skal out there nobody would get a shot up against us. I hope it doesn't turn into 1/2 done as a trend.
