SIAP: DeVries was in communication with IU while he potentially going into the tourney.

And people wonder why I don't get upset over the player portal. Wade leaving his team DURING the tourney and DeVries would've too potentially had WVU made it.

I feel the same way. The NCAA used to demand the players play for the cost of room and board while coaches could waltz away from multi-million dollar contracts in the middle of the night if a better gig came open.

Got your governor trying to have your back because the system is so corrupt and all the while you’re making back room deals with another team. Can’t make this shit up!!!
Glad you said that because this is exactly what I thought of. I get you have to do what's best for you in life, but SOME loyalty and honor would be nice.

To be fair, the new school needs to pay for that. Pretty much all coaches (except for Cal, apparently), have pretty substantial buyouts. So yes, this coach can leave, but IU is going to have to pay WVU through the nose in order to get it.

And on the flip side, if coaches get let go, they get paid out a big buyout, so it protects and rewards them a bit.

No buyouts for transfers, no obligation, just the wild west.

And if players are "asked to leave" or moved on from at their current schools, they don't get a buyout or any compensation. They are just out in the cold.

I am a HUGE fan of the portal, NIL, all of it. I think it should be all about the players. But the portal is a very different reality than buying coaches out of contracts.

Izzo did this with us.
Tubby and Minnesota
Bill Frieder accepted Arizona State job before tourney. Bo S told him to go ahead and leave and that's how Steve Fischer won a national championship with 0 regular season wins.

Most employees talk to a new employer before letting their current employer know. This isn't new.
Issue is, most people in this country aren't under contract, but are at will. Most of us can walk into our boss tomorrow, tell them to pound sand, and walk out. Now, DeVries contract may have had no clause about is, but a lot of coaches usually have to inform their universities if they are in contact with another school.

Nontheless, WVU was fighting for a tourney spot, their governor just went to bat for their team and this guy, and he was basically out the door.

It's not illegal, maybe not even immoral. But it's a shitty thing to do.

Wade addressed the team about it and is coaching the tournament. I’m sure DD would have as well. He lied about contact with IU but most coaches do.

I didn't mean leave in the phsyical sense. But do you think he's mentally still at McNeese? Hell no. And how is his team supposed to respond and feel? This coach that you've fought with all year is now going... "Well......bye"

I mean, why should they even care now? I dunno. Just seems like a really ratty thing to do.

They paid WVU 6.2 million to hire him. 4 million buyout, the firm used to hire him, and expenses related to him leaving and taking the job.

We will see, they aren’t favored to win a game anyway. I think he at least told his guys yeah I am probably gonna take this job and my agent is speaking to them. At least he didn’t BS them while acting like he was all in or something.

Coaches also are guaranteed their pay, players are not.

I believe ironically enough WVU still owed Drake some on that buyout package and IU had to agree to pay off the balance of the Drake buyout AND the full WVU buyout.

Do we think his kid knew that he was in talks to leave and had to carry that secret most of the season? Not that it matters, but adds to the drama.
