SI : Coach Cal ranked #3 coach in college basketball

Except that they do well on either side of Cal's influence. It's as if they drIve through a dark tunnel with a smaller rim and a dead plywood backboard during their time at UK.
Well there is an adjustment period to the next level each time. Not like they burn up the NBA in there first year and make the all-star team.

Which begs the question, why is Cal anchoring his teams to one-and-done players? Why do it if they're too inexperienced and raw to win?

I've always said, if winning titles is the goal and you're dead set on high school kids, you better get a team full of top shelf 5 star kids, anything below top shelf and you're just in it for draft picks at that point.

Think you need a mix of kids, new and young. We need to start grabbing 3/4 stars and developing them alongside our 1 and dones. It'd help immensely.

There are 2 versions of Cal:
First version: 2009-2015
Second version: 2016-2023

The first version of Cal is 3rd behind K and Roy, which is really respectable. Dude had fire and motivation back then, he was awesome.

The second version of Cal isn't a top 10 coach. He's had more talent than anyone else in college ball, but he has severely underperformed. He can get talent, he just isn't a good coach for today's game.
Can't disagree at all ... think this is about as fair of a statement that can be made. The first version was fun and exciting but the second version, not so much.

I've been saying that for years, but the problem is the culture that Cal has created. Nobody stays in this program more than 3 years and actually, there's only a handful that made it to year 3, maybe 10%.

Also, if you're a 3* kid, you won't get to play, because every year, there is a new batch of NBA draft wonder kids that Cal has to play so they can work through whatever issues they're having.

Guys like Juzang, Hopkins, Wiltjer, Baker and even Lance Ware knew better than to stay.

UK needs a clean slate with a totally different regime. Cal will always be the one-and-done guy and I want that stink to be washed off the UK brand.

I think he wouldn’t be in the top 10 maybe not even too 15 judging the lest 5-6 years. He has sucked pretty badly. Before that he had it going good and top 5 for sure. He was never an “excellent” X and O coach.
