Noting Flagg at 6’7 3/4” (I know , not a big drop from 6’9” but still) I’m always amused by players shrinking from their college team’s listed
height once they are measured for the NBA draft. Why do teams inflate their heights?

Well if true....he's a small ball four or best spot is PF....but to not be 6'10....he's going to be a shorter PF......which hurts this generational talent label that he's had. Like is he really a better talent then Anthony Davis was in 2012? Wembenyama just 2 years ago?

It is weird.

Travis Ford was listed at 5’9. I took a photo with him when I was in sixth grade. We were the same height. I might’ve been 5’6 at the time.

I also heard Charles Barkley and Chuck Hayes were both closer to 6’4 than their listed 6’6.

He’s never been listed at 6’10”, that was just a number that his internet message board fan boys liked to throw around.

And I doubt any scouts are surprised by this. It’s normal routine for players to measure shorter at the combine than listed in college. A dude 6’7 3/4” without shoes being listed at 6’9” is par for the course.

Combine measures shoes off. They all play in shoes that add approx 1-1.5". I assume the combine just measures that way to make sure everyone is on the same level regardless of what shoe they wear.

Wasn't it once noted that some coaches measure with shoes on to get the taller reading?

Yeah, without shoes just gives a more reliable, consistent and honest measurement. There’s more variance in the results when measured in shoes.

Which is why without shoes is the only one NBA scouts trust.

Wembanyama is a true generational talent. Flagg is not and I don’t believe AD was either.
I don’t think Anthony Edwards had that high of a distinction, but he sure has become that.

He is 6'9 on the court.

His more important measurements were solid though. Wingspan and Standing reach are what NBA scouts look at anyway.

7' wingspan and 8'10.5" standing reach. Guessing his reach would be 9' in shoes, so pretty solid measurements for him.

McNeeley really got hurt with the measurements..... Almost 6'7" without shoes, but his standing reach was only 8'3.5". That's going to be tough for him to guard 3s in the NBA, and he's not really quick enough to be a 2 guard. That's still just average measurements for a 2 guard in the NBA.

Almost the same length as Alijah Martin who measured at 6'1.5"

College roster measurements are in shoes.
NBA combine without.
Flagg's barefoot measurement puts him a tad over 6'9 in shoes.
Shoes usually add 1.25 to 1.5 in.
I stood next to Wes unseld in the stans at Morehead when he's brother was there I'm 6'3. He was not over 6'5. Yet played equal to wilt and Russell

They play in shoes, that's how you should measure them. Don't understand the barefoot thing for basketball.
Both of these are true. I haven't looked at combine measurements in a while, but they used to give both barefoot and in shoes measures. Which is the way to do it. Every once in a while you'll see a kid who is 6'1 1/4 barefoot and listed at 6'4, but that's pretty rare. As is almost always true in life, more info is better, and helps to self police.

Two Rutgers frosh in the top 3 picks? How did that happen? They had a losing record? Did they fire the coach. He must be like Cal. Great recruiter. Lousy coach.

Reminds me of Rupp’s famous line, “I’ve never had a player play barefoot, so we don’t measure in their bare feet.” Makes sense to me.

However, I’m sure some would wear platform shoes if they weren’t measured in bear feet!

Antoine Walker at UK was listed at 6'8" the NBA teams he played for listed him at 6'9". And KAT at UK was listed at 6'11", the NBA lists him at 7'0".

Never thought about that but it makes perfect sense. Also, when running a 40 in football, shouldn't it be done with full gear on?
I actually thought that first about DB’s at the combine. What I really should care about is their reach plus vertical. Not head height plus vertical.

Probably because the NBA measures them at the combine with no shoes on.

Wouldn’t standing reach be better? The height of your head isn’t a factor like the height of your reach.

Just a thought.
Reminds me of something Jerry Krause (GM of the Chicago Bulls in their heyday) once said. He was talking about a particular player - may have been Tony Kukoc, I can't remember - but the player had an unusually long neck. Which is why Krause said height measures are largely irrelevant, whether it's a too long neck, too big a head, whatever. He called all that "wasted inches". I don't think height is totally irrelevant* and we should rely completely on say wingspan, but wingspan is more important.

*Hesitant to disregard height completely and this example pops in my head. Take Eric Bledsoe, 6'1 with a 6'9 wingspan. Who would you rather guard an opponent that is say 6'10 - Bledsoe or someone on your team that is 6'9 with a 6'9 wingspan? if wingspan is all that matters, and height doesn't matter at all, you'd say either answer is the same. But no one would say that.

That makes adds up…Krause has a giant head.
