Seems like that would give him the best chance of carving out a niche next year at UK and in the NBA. I think he has potential to grow into that role. Nice mechanics, showed potential this year.

I just don't ever see him having the strength or mentality to play close to the basket.

He was a freshman and playing with elite players for the first time. People can get stronger

Wenyen will be balling next year, mark it down.

No,No,No 1000 x No! he'd have a better chance of making silk purses out of sow's ears.(which in Cal's case he could probably do):D

I think it should be part of his game, sure. The biggest thing Gabriel needs is to just get more fluid laterally. I think his ideal role in the NBA is a long perimeter 3/4 defender and corner three point shooter.

That seems to be how we're using him here, he just needs to adjust to the college game and be more consistent.

I would add he also needs to go all DeAndre Liggins and become a demon on defense.

No, but a three point maker with some kind of reliable post move like a little half hook and a 3/4 defender sounds good.

If Wenyen isn't in the gym making 200 threes a day this summer, I don't know what the hell he's doing with his time. He'd better turn *himself* into a three point shooter.

Wenyan has all of the physical tools to be great. He just needs strength, maturity and gym time.

IMHO, we will see a huge improvement in his game next season.

Gabriel will be a beast before he leaves here next season . I don't think he will be our leading scorer next season but he will be in the top 4 along with JV , PJ and Knox. Green's assists numbers I think will at worst lead the SEC and could easily be the 7-8 a game range . Just hope his turnovers aren't in the 5-6 range a game though .

He had a stretch of games in early SEC where he was hitting his outside shots, then he just disappeared to close out the season. I think his versatility will be his biggest contribution to next year.

He isn't a 3 point specialist but he showed he can make them last year and should be a pretty reliable shooter as well this year.

Yes, I agree with this assessment. I think Gabriel will be a very valuable piece to this team next season. He needs to get stronger and he needs to become more fluid, as you say. His motor is great. I think he hit a wall last season in regard to his confidence more than anything. SEC play was hard on him because of his lack of strength and all the physical play. But he will be ready this fall, in my opinion. He was on the verge of being elite last season- we all know he's got huge upside. I'm just glad we get to see him develop for another year.

Wouldn't be the worst idea. He shot 31% from 3 as a freshman, close to what Willis shot as a sophomore, only Wenyen did it on a lot more attempts.

Wenyen's ability to make 3's will be the difference between him riding the pine and seeing a decent amount of minutes, considering we're bringing in several versatile forwards that will challenge him for PT.

31% as a 4 man isn't bad. TJ shot about 33% and was considered pretty decent from behind the arc for a PF.

If Gabriel improves just a bit, he could be a consistent perimeter weapon at the 4.

how bout putting 35 or40 lbs on him and make a post player out of him UK needs them and they do use them in the nba all of these kids think they can play guard

I think his best comparison could/should be T Jones.

I thought that Jones took the team to another level when he quit trying to create his own stuff and focused on finishing off of passes and putbacks around the rim. He didn't fall in love with the 3 or jumper, but he'd make you pay if you let him have it open.

He needs to rebound and block shots, and let the rest fall into place.

He got eaten in that game against UT. But another year, and maybe he'll eat UT.

Wenyen is one of the oddest combinations of expert coordination and klutziness I've ever seen. For a good while at least, I'm still gonna cringe whenever he touches the ball. And I'm still gonna maintain that with some strength and consistency he could be MKG with a jumpshot.

At first I read that too quick and thought, "Watt? Terrence could swallow Wenyen whole and not even know it!"

But in terms of what you actually said--that he needs to rebuild his approach to the game the same way--I think you're dead on.
