Should Barker Play Against EKU? (Non QB Controversy Thread)

Towles stepped up last night and ended any debate about a QB controversy. The kid was lights out.

But Barker got knocked out on film in Richmond and his teammates pussy-footed around. Whether Barker earned it or not, we have to play him next week, right?

I say line up for a series without receivers and put Hyde, Taco Meat, Conrad, and whoever else eats gundpowder for breakfast in a jumbo package in the backfield and run the QB draw with Barker right at whatever side Graffree is on until EKU takes the kid out.

What say you?

I think if we are whipping EKU, everybody should get some minutes, especially Barker.

That's a dangerous mentality. Accomplishes nothing and promotes an environment for another altercation to occur. Nobody wins in that scenario. Better to run the score up on them and walk away.

Drew should get some reps, but only after the game is well in hand and only as an option to get him some reps in case Pat suffers an injury.

No, UK needs to win the game first. If it's a three possession lead late in the fourth quarter then yes put Barker in for a couple series along with the rest of the second string. This is supposed to be a feel good game going into the bye week.

I am assuming that we should be able to easily handle EKU. If we can't, we have bigger issues.

If we're up 21 going into the 4th quarter or 28 at half, Drew should play. This is big time football, not playground peepee measuring.

I hope we beat EKU by 50 or 60. I really do after I saw that sucker punch on Barker. Honestly, I wish Stoops had more of a mean streak at times. He needs to be a little more like Spurrier and pour it on inferior teams. Dominate them and don't let up. There is nothing wrong with beating a team by 50 points IMO. I want to see it. It gives us an edge in mentality as a program. Send a message to the other teams in the state that we are now the #1 program. Beating EKU and UL is an absolute must this season. I really want to play WKU too.

There was never a QB controversy. People just wanted Patrick to play better. I saw very very few people who thought Barker should start.

In this game, UK players need to have their head on a swivel. Itll be chippy. Hopefully we get out without serious injury.

Barker should absolutely get some time. My hope is that we're up well enough to let him run the 4th quarter, maybe even sooner if it is getting out of hand.

Yes he absolutely needs to play. We're one play away from having the entire season depend on him. We need to get him as many snaps as we can.

I'd like to see him in the first quarter. Play with the ones against the ones. Should have done the same against ULL. Then additional in the fourth if we get the lead.

Missouri puts their backup freshman QB, Lock, in for a series every game, up or down. Did anybody notice that when he came into our game, he got 58 yards running and passing in his first 4 plays? I personally was glad to see Mauk back there the rest of the game.

I hope that, when he plays, they let him run the regular offense so he's practicing what we may need him to do. Not just handing off up the gut. Never made any sense to me to give the 2nd string guys reps and then not let them actually run the offense.

I believe if this was Towles last year we would be doing something like that. I expect Barker to get more PT next year to get him ready to take over for Towles. Unless Towles just goes off and becomes a first round pick or something this year.

If we go up 21-0 or 24-3 or something like that as early as the 2Q, I'd like to see Barker get in the game...give him some reps in a game that's at least halfway close in score in case Towles gets hurt later this year and he has a few real reps instead of just turning around and handing the ball to #18.

Towles did just go off, in case you didn't notice. However he has to be able to play close to that level consistently for us to be really good or to contend for anything, including a decent bowl.

I'm not worried about revenge or any of that stuff, but I am worried about not playing football and some dumb plays and retaliation getting some players kicked out of our next game. UK has a lot more to lose than Eastern IMO, we need to just play football.

If the game is well in hand, then he should get in the game, but the revenge factor for what happened should play no part in this game.

Barker definitely needs to get his feet wet . You never know when he might have to come in , even for a snap or two.

Would like to see him late third or early fourth because the Cats have a huge lead. I see no value in him coming in for the last two series or so when he's only going to hand it off.

THIS

It's not about a qb controversy or who should start: it's about getting the backup some reps in case he's called upon at some point. It's common with every football team in the nation. This staff is also aware that barker needs reps and would love to give them to him when there's an opportunity and not in a close game if they don't need too.

It's on the team to get a comfortable enough lead and take care of business early to allow PT for a lot of backup guys that could use game experience.

Towles played great Saturday night, got his confidence up and it showed. Stoops hasn't showed he is willing to pull him so he should feel its his team. But I think Barker deserves a little playing time too, he is probably the only guy in the 2 deep who hasn't gotten any snaps. So during the week, Stoops/Dawson should tell both qbs barker is going to get a series sometime in the first half. UK should handled EKU without much trouble and it will get Barker some time when he gets to run the offense and not turn around and hand the ball of trying to run clock. Won't hurt Towles confidence and get Barker some snaps and a chance to run the offense, win win because it doesn't do Barker, other than saying he played, any real experience killing the clock.

But if the only reason is to get revenge for getting sucker punched, he shouldn't dress out for the game, it has no place on the football field.

Barker needs to get some snaps under his belt and EKU should be an opportune game. I would like to hear Stoops announce tomorrow night that he is going to try to get him some reps while stating that Towles has solidified his spot as the starter. That would keep the chatter and speculation to a minimum.

Don't agree... He's got every right to do the same, as long as it doesn't hurt him or the team...

Go CATS!

Absolutely. Got a decent little season going and he could really use the experience just in case he's needed down the line.

I would hope drew, Sihiem, conrad, jones, allen, kg, baity, firios, middleton, dubose, elam, Thad, and any other young guy that haven't got reps can play extensively in the 2nd half.

It was a shame we didn't play better against ull so those guys could get a couple series/extra series.

Can't agree with that, the athletic field isn't a place for cheap shots to get revenge for something that started in a bar/club. I really can't see how anyone could possibly think it would be. How do you feel about taking a knee out of a kid who just made a big play?

Barker needs a series regardless of score or situation in this game. Missouri let their backup get a series and he actually played pretty well. Barker needs game reps, Stoops knows it and said he would play this game.

I would like to see Drew play the entire 2nd and 4th quarters, Stoops said in his interview today that Drew will definitely play Sat.

Have to play the 2nd string QB vs EKU. Doesn't matter if his name is Barker or Rockford, has a history with the other team or not.
Our program needs the 2nd team QB to get some reps.
4 out of 4 of our games have been close, so the backup has no reps.
He plays.

Stoops said in is presser than Drew Barker will play against EKU.

I think he was meaning as "going off" the rest of the season and playing his way to a first round pick.
UK should not worry about what EKU does, only worry about themselves. I hope the staff only says a couple of words about it...players need to play and not overthink

Not sure how it's anything but personal at this point... Did you see the video of the sucker punch? If not go watch it... A very dangerous moment which could have killed him--happens across this country all of the time...

Something just doesn't add up about that story, and I can't put my finger on it... Why wasn't the EKU player prosecuted with video evidence?

Yes, I seen the video, punk move by the guy no doubt. But regardless of that football field is no place for payback. The courtroom is where that should have been settled. But I do agree something about the entire thing doesn't add up.
