Shiyaz Pete; A UK First?

Maybe, maybe not. Not a long history of football (and the expense) on the reservations, I should think. Gaming money has changed that. Example... I noticed a couple years ago that the tribal school in Cherokee, NC now has a posh stadium and a NC Class A title to go with it. But this is a recent development. Blackjack money. In his case, I don't whether he was raised on, off, or on and off reservation. Just interested.

I researched it and I believe he is the first Native American to play football at UK.
What was your approach to that? Scanning rosters for names that suggested it? Not sure how I'd go about it any better.

Related question... have we ever had a Polynesian player? Mumme/Morris era seems we did.

AI and I looked at rosters from 1950 on, certain names, locations, etc.

Yes, we had a Polynesian player under Mumme and I believe Brooks. I am going off memory

Pete has arrived. Super excited to get started. Wolford also super excited he got him. At 6-8 320, Pete said Wolford convinced him UK needed him more than anyone else he was looking at and that Wolford said he will work him hard to get him to the NFL. He had an overall grade of 72 and is solid in pass and run blocking. Pete and Wollslaeger, 6-7 310 ORT and a 78 blocking grade, should make a great pair of OT's for us. Both have done well both pass/run blocking.

Pete looks like he needs to do some push-ups. Those triceps luck weak. I know he doesn't need biceps, but do some arm curls while you are at it.

Might be. Hope this signals a growing trend for the tribes. Some great natural athletes among the tribes
"Signals", huh?

Found this---During AAPI Heritage Month, we honor Fatu Turituri, born in American Samoa and the first Polynesian player for Kentucky Football. A junior college transfer, he was a Wildcat offensive lineman in 2005-06. He started 10 games at UK and was a member of Coach Brooks first bowl team.
dam ... nice research skilz...

He's a huge man, length like no one we've ever had at LT in my recollection. If he has the feet and punch to go with it, I can see Wolford being excited. His starting 3 years, even at NMSU, suggests he does.

I think Gruenschlaeger played LT, walk on who was 6-11” and about 350 or so.

Kris Comstock and Jonas Liening(sp) had exceptional length.

Recall them, now that you mention them. For which coaches did they play?
Wasn't it Hal Mumme. Played with Tim Couch. Both about 6-8. Sadly Liening passed away. Had two young kids. Is Mumme still living in Lexington? Remember him being arrested at a hotel a couple of years ago because he would not leave.

He actually was a starter in his senior year, played a lot as a jr if I’m thinking correctly. I also think Calvin Taylor was an OL who excelled on the defensive side of the ball, he was around 6’9. Pretty sure he was recruited solely for defense though.

When my Mom was in a Lexington rest home, I got to meet his significant other, a local girl. IIRC they were expecting their second kid. She used to stop by my Mom’s room to talk UK Football with me.

He is frequently shown on camera at UK games, being about the biggest guy in his section, and a very active fan.

IIRC, Jeremy Streck was killed in Ohio, struck by a vehicle crossing a street. Is Jonas Leining gone, too?

I think Streck backed up Leining and Kris Comstock, and played a lot of snaps. All of them were like 6’ 7” or so.

Damn, those were you cats to pass so young.

The big kid and former O-lineman from Rockcastle County that suffered a fall from the upper to the lower deck during the freak 4th Q. play when we tipped and picked South Carolina’s QB for a go-ahead TD in ‘14 is doing well, says friends in Rockcastle. His name has slipped my mind. Started at O-tackle in 2006-2007.

Played some special teams, and at Tackle in a Spring game or two.

Had a sister at UK playing volleyball IIRC.

And I think he had the distinction of having the longest last name in program history, going side-to-side on his uniform, with four letters spilling onto the Guard next to him.

Yeah, part of the OL that Mumme inherited from Curry. That whole crew would have at least looked impressive even in today's SEC.
