Shagari

Criminally under utilized by Tubby
I was and still am one of the bigger Tubby defenders on this board, but I must agree - although in a slightly different way. I always suspected there were off court issues with Alleyne due to his intermittent appearances. If he played at all, he got plenty of time but the other times he was simply DNP.

But when he DID play I felt he was horribly mis-used. Smith always had him set up defensively between the foul line and the top of the key, and he was expected to roll in to the basket if the opponents achieved penetration and Shagari was just not quick enough for that. Maybe that was doctrinaire for Ball Line Defense, but if there was ever a player Tubby should have played outside the confines of the BLD, it was 7’3” - 8’ wingspan Alleyne. He should have been parked down low and told don’t get further than 4’ from the goal on defense.

In the IU game referenced, I remember the IU player (but not his name) who pump faked Shagari into jumping prematurely and who then jumped and shot, and Alleyne still blocked his shot while standing flat footed on the floor. I loved it.
