Seth Greenberg observations after watching team practice

Love that it seems we have guys with no ego. Great to hear him mention that about multiple players. Im very excited to see Washington. Kid was constantly engaged and attacked for USA team. Hes gonna be a fan favorite.

It has been kind of funny seeing peoples starting lineups. Vanderbilt and Alexander have intrigued me more than all the others. Even if they don't start, I think those two give us a variety of things. Love the way they come to play and seem to be very efficient performers.

I think we can pencil in Richards for 2018/2019. If he's that unpolished offensively he's going to have to be near perfect on defense and rebounding to stay on the floor. And staying on the floor for 20+ minutes is the only way he's gonna get drafted as a freshman.

Pfft. He's a phenomenal lob target. If he rebounds and defends aggressively, he'll get 30 minutes per game (and should).

30 is too many minutes, simply by way of other front court players, PFs playing the #5 or simply going small ball.

Knox and Washington are going to see lots of minutes at the 3 and 4. Then you still have Gabriel getting minutes due to experience, Vandy will get time. Hey, I hope Richards is that much of load to get 30 minutes.. But im afraid that will more so be because other players aren't panning out.

im praying he's wrong about Richards. We don't need another 7 ft waste of space. If he can't shoot or can't play to expectations, we are screwed come tournament time.

What I love about this team, on paper at least, is the depth and redundancy. I dont think we need Richards to win the title. If he we're to struggle, Gabriel could fill in at the 5, possibly SKJ, or we run a bit smaller. One of our PFs could fill in by the end of the season and at least be serviceable.

Is Texas A&M going to be THAT good??
I know that Williams kid is an absolute game changer and Tyler Davis should average 14 and 8 but their guards were horrible last year. If they can get any consistency from the 1-3 then they will be very good. I think they have the best pair of front court mates in the country but will need everyone else to chip in or they will be like the old LSU teams.

Fat boy Davis will probably have a rough time running with the type of players we have this year.

If we need Gabriel to play the five out of necessity we are screwed as far as a title run goes. Maybe elite 8.

Well, it's never so black and white. It's not like we either get 40 minutes of Richards or none at all. I expect 15-20 mpg from Richards this year. At best, I think you're talking high 20's. He looks for certain that he'll get into foul trouble only having a few years of ball under his belt (playing with a Kentucky jersey on doesn't help officiating matters, either).

Someone is going to have to fill in for the PF/C spot. Gabriel brings rebounding and experience and he's showing us that he's taking his sophomore season seriously. Washington is also a candidate to play Center, though I'm not sure how I feel about Freshman playing out of position. That's a huge undertaking for a first year player, as we watched with Skal playing Center.

"They’re going to lose some games, because they’re really young, and they’ve got to figure it out, and because the league is good,” Greenberg said.

Appreciate Seth saying it, but it's an obvious point.

And yet, how many posters will declare the team DOA, or say they have a ceiling of Sweet 16 "at best", or run to start a thread about Cal's way not working - the first time we lose a road game to some mediocre team? 11 scholarship players, and they're all freshmen and sophomores. So it's coming....

Wouldn't be surprised to see Washington at the 5 some. He's strong, he's aggressive, he can score in the post. He is only 6'7-6'8 but has a 7'4 wingspan. That kind of length will offset his height a little.

Our best lineup might end up being Green, Diallo, Knox, Vanderbilt, and Washington.

lmao..Gabriel will not play at the 5...If we have to have someone other than Richards or SKJ it would be Washington with his 7'3 wingspan, but this team will not make a F4 without one of the bigs being good

I think you are right. This might be the starters.

Ideally, yes, SKJ. But he got zero minutes last year. I'm really not sure what to expect from him. He was in the dog-house all year and playing time in the front court is only going to be harder to come by

Gabriel IS too thin for the 5. But IIRC, Cal tried to use him there at times last season (or maybe that's just how lost he was on the floor at times). He has great rebounding on a per basis and length to protect the paint.

If Washington is looking like the best player on the team, do we want to play him out of position?

I get it, but if we need Gabriel to be a 20+ minutes 5 a championship is not gonna happen. We need Richards to be a stable big who can protect and rebound. Not too complicated.

Everyone is underestimating Nick Richards. He does alot of things for a team that never shows up on a stat sheet, i will very surprised if he is around for two seasons..

How many times before people understand? The NBA drafts based on measurables, upside, specific skills i.e. shooting, and overall current ability. Richards has 2..great size and athleticism. He will be gone by season's end bc he can provide a team something now and has tremendous upside.

Cal may surprise folks and try runs with Diallo at point and go big. I can see him trying a version of:
Diallo, Knox, Vanderbilt, Washington, Richards or possibly slide Shai in the mix for Richards.

Nope he just based on potential is a top 15 pick.

What I worry about is inexperience, not only as a a freshman but also for how long he's been playing basketball. We always think these freshman are going to be monsters, but every year, one or two have some real struggles, some to the point that they never see the floor. Look at Gabriel and SKJ last year, respectively.

It's why I don't think we'll start 5 freshman, unless Gabriel continues to disappoint. Someone just won't be quite ready, it's almost inevitable, from a numbers game.

Richards could very well do those thigns and go top10. He just strikes me as a kid that's going to have a tough time doing all the things Cal wants him to do.

Reactionary babies. Embarrassing.

I literally freak out like a 7 year old when things don't go my way over U.K. Basketball.

Hell I've got a Duke "fan" friend who I won't even speak to right now over this crap. Can't even get if off my mind.

I hate Barney and Bell because it's probably their fault to an extent.

I'm a mess right now. At least I'm honest.

Dude, calm down.

The only guy that I'd say is a definite starter is Diallo. There are a bunch of possible combinations for the other four spots. We could go three guards or start three forwards. I wouldn't be surprised at the latter since the guys who are the closest thing to traditional centers we have are big question marks. Lets hope the competitiveness is because everyone is really good rather than everyone being "meh".

I think a reasonable, and I would be happy with this, expectation from Richards would be the FR version of WCS. No offense other than lobs & put-backs, but good defense. Partly inflated due to the Noel injury in SEC play, WCS averaged 23.6 mpg, 8.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.1 bpg. He made 62% of his shots, but only 37% at the line (ok I need better than 37%).
