That's right! The annual thread is back.
"This is why we're going to win the game this year", says the Cards fans.
Here's my favorite from the thread:
"I tend to agree with most all the OPs points. The reason we will win this season is because of the third point. They will be more limited inside with talent this year. They will have Humphries, Wynard, Adebayo, Willis and Gabriel. Noe of these guys have the skill or experience to deal with what we have at the 4 and 5 spots. We will dominate the boards and points in the paint." - beauxregard
Well, I'm interested, so let's look at a comparison of the 2 frontcourts:
Kentucky:
Bam Adebayo: 6'10, 260# (five star recruit, best rebounder in the class, and most physically dominant player in the class, freak athlete, ability to handle the ball, take it all the way in transition, good mid-range game, terrific passer all over the floor)
Isaac Humphries: 7'0, 250# (high four-star recruit, been mentioned numerous times as a breakout performer this year. Has proven that he's able to rebound with the best of them, has a solid jumper, good from the free throw stripe ([83% FT shooter in HS], can score around the rim)
Tai Wynyard: 6'10, 255# (high four-star recruit, showed some terrific flashes of offensive ability with smooth footwork, specifically his post-spin move, and range out to the international 3 point line, which is further away than the college line. Strong rebounder by all accounts)
Derek Willis: 6'9, 224# (three-star recruit heading into his senior season, elite 3 point shooter, regardless of size, and an elite free throw shooter. Showed the ability to take it the full length of the court in transition, and showed good athleticism. Solid rebounder)
Wenyen Gabriel: 6'10, 214# (five-star recruit, very fluid athlete, raw prospect, but he has ability to drive the ball the full length of the court and finish at the rim. Incredible motor, plays with a lot of intensity. Probably won't be a great 3 point shooter this season, but the ability is there, and the shot is in his arsenal)
Sacha Killeya-Jones: 6'11, 224# (five-star recruit, said to be the best athlete of all the bigs, similar speed and lateral quickness to Willie Cauley-Stein. Not as highly rated as the other players, but his offensive skills are terrific. Very good jump-shooter, very good at putting the ball on the floor and driving to the rim. A bit mechanical in how he moves in some cases, but in others, he moves pretty smoothly and naturally).
Louisville:
Matz Stockman: 7'0, 250# (2.7 PTS 1.7 REB, below 50% FT shooter, their biggest frontcourt player by a lot)
Anas Mahmoud: 7'0, 210# (3.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, far below 50% FG, and even further below 50% FT)
Mangok Mathiang: 6'10, 220# (7.1 PTS, 5.7 REB, below 60% FT, 19 minutes per game)
Raymond Spalding: 6'10, 210# (5.6 PTS, 4.3 REB, 50% FT on the spot, 18 minutes per game. Super raw)
Jaylen Johnson: 6'9, 225# (5.0 PTS, 3.5 REB, just above 50% FT, 18 minutes per game)
So, looking at their frontcourt, which they claim is going to be super dominant next season:
Their average height is 6'10.6 among the 5 players that will get significant playing time in their frontcourt, in comparison to UK's average height of 6'10.3 among the 6 players that could see the rotation for UK, so Louisville has the ever so slight height advantage over UK (but in fairness, they also have one less frontcourt player as well).
Their average weight is 223 pounds (which is atrocious). By comparison, UK's average weight in the frontcourt is 238 pounds, with 3 players that weight just as much, if not more than their biggest player (who happens to give the worst production for them).
You can foul every single one of their frontcourt options with seemingly no repercussions when it comes to sending them to the line, and every one of them are awful shooters.
So I pose the question, does anybody see something that I'm missing? Where is Louisville going to physically and skillfully dominate UK, when UK has superior size, superior speed, superior skill, and superior depth?
Just some food for thought. Just wanted to take the opportunity to chat about what I thought was pretty comical, and give some of the Louisville lurkers something to think about.
