Sean Miller's bizarre statement

I find it interesting that we lose a game for an innocent celebration at TAMU. Yet, NOTHING is done when fans rush the court and endanger players, other fans, security, etc.

I guess if we can lose a game for a single player celebrating by throwing a ball, I can agree that forfeiting the win would be appropriate.

Maybe we need a return to the days when basketball was played in a cage.

They could break out some hockey glass that they use to surround the ice and put it around the courts with only openings going to the tunnels to the locker rooms. Just put padding on the walls behind the basket to cushion impacts.

Proactive isn't in the NCAA vocabulary - someone will have to be seriously injured or even killed before they take action.

Not a fan of storming the court. It happens way too often for meaningless games. I also know that a lot of college kids are obnoxious morons and may be motivated to do something stupid.

It is very easy to stop the crowds from storming the courts.
Every court should be accessible through the locker rooms only. .There should be barriers between the players, coaches, officials in the courts, and the crowds in the stands.
As much money as NCAA collects for a lousy job it does, they should provide 50% of the funds necessary to accomplish this. The other 50% from colleges who want to protect their athletes.

This will never happen given the prices and clout that goes along with courtside seats. At minimum, you're going to have courtside seats in most places. Now, the endzone student sections, that's another story.

I wasn't calling out Miller's condemnation of court storming. I just thought it was weird to specify his own team as being the one to hit a fan. Later in his statement he says that in the Pac-12, Arizona is the only team to induce a court storming, so I guess that's why.

Sean Miller seems extra cranky this year. That said, the court storming needs to end. It's gotten past the "cool" stage. How to do that IDK. Forfeit? More fines?

Fines don't seem to be working. It's kinda like UL wanting to buy their way out of the hooker scandal. The only thing I've got against forfeit is the possibility of a large group of opposing fans storming the opposing teams' court.

It's why I could never play college basketball, aside from lack of talent and belonging no where near a basketball..

If I lose and I have hundreds of opposing fans in my face, someone is getting punched.

I think earlier this year fans for West Virginia stormed the court after they beat Oklahoma. My daughter looked at me and said..."Dad isn't West Virginia ranked #12 in the country?...It shouldn't be that big of a deal!" I laughed because she is 14 and she gets it! If you are truly a top 20 team and fan base....ACT like it.

Here's the problem with making a team forfeit a game for court storming. What's keeping the fans of the losing team from storming the court to induce a forfeit?

Yeah I don't think a forfeit is the answer here.

What about for each court storming, they lose the right to host a home game the following year?

They could also look at video of it and identify all the students that they can and immediately expel them.

That was what I was going to suggest. You could also make them ineligible for the conference tournament, if it is a conference game.

I don't think it's ever going to fully change. Here's a link to a 1990 article about fans ripping down goal posts and the danger of it. Now most schools have gone to the collapsible goal posts but still fans are getting injured. 2011, 13 OK St fans were injured tearing down the goal posts. Something really bad is going to have to happen for something to change. However, it probably won't be adopted NCAA wide and the schools that should implement something, won't

I think forfeiting any game is a bit much.

Not right to go rewrite what just happened because of people who played no part in the outcome.

Can't cancel / forfeit the next game because it hurts the visiting team monetarily too and they did nothing to deserve that.

I say suspend the head coach for the next two games. The double it each time it happens.

Kind of like how they have barriers around football fields and no one ever storms the field in football? Unless you put chain link fence up, a "barrier" is not going to stop it.

Kentucky fans would have stormed the floor after every game in the BCG era if this was the rule

First of all, his reaction is more about losing than it is about court storming. When it happens to UK, my reaction is usually more about losing than court storming, too. So, I can't say too much to Miller. I'm guilty as well. It's bad enough when one of these weak teams has a one-game beer muscles kind of output and beats you on their home floor. But storming the court is adding insult to injury, and it makes you mad. That's what we saw from Sean Miller here.

Having said this, while his comment is over the top and a result of sour grapes, I agree with the thought behind it. I don't like the court storming. I'll admit that my first reason for not liking it is because it happens to my team too often. We all know that every road game for UK is someone's national title game, and it just gets old. But my second reason for not liking this and thinking it should end is more legitimate. The potential for injury or an altercation is there, even if it's not highly likely to happen.

After fans storm the court the team's next home game is played in an EMPTY gym and NO TV for that game so that element of "fan" that created the situation might appreciate what a privilege it is to attend a game.

To be fair we might be the least likely fan base in the country to relate to court storming at all.

One could be nearly a hundred and still have no connection to the reaction.
We've been good for so long no one can remember a time when it wouldn't be flat out embarrassing to act in such a way while we have been on the other side many times.

I can't stand court storming, it's beyond played out. We got people rushing the court for beating anyone nowadays. I think ESPN shows the court storming too much anyways, so people look at it as the cool thing. All it takes is one student to mouth off to a pissed off player and all hell could break lose.

I don't know how you could stop it. It's laughable to think schools care about those fines. If I remember correctly, didn't USCjr AD say it was money well spent after they rushed the court after beating UK in 14?

In this day and age you could have video evidence of students rushing and perhaps start taking away scholarships or fin support. If its bad you could kick them out. I know that sounds harsh, but if action is needed to be taken then you have to hit offenders where it hurts. No student cares if there university has to pay a fine.

Um, it's the opposing team's players likely to get hurt, not the home team's. So should Ky pay for all the SEC teams to have barriers put up?

I'm one that doesn't care about court storming, but these kids today are a different bunch. Totally disrespectful as far as a group is concerned. Maybe it should be stopped.

What the hell is wrong with what miller said?

NEWS FLASH: Not everyone buys into today's PC garbage. He's a Basketball coach. 10-20 years ago that wouldn't even be a topic. If it bothers you (no one directly), you might be part of the problem.

I kind of Agree with Miller on this... One day some punk student kid is gonna go too far and say or do something and a player is going to retalliate violently...

Idk if it will be out of self defense, but the emotions of losing a tight game/buzzer beater coupled with all that will catch up to some player eventually

It's all just a ticking time bomb imo

Player safety should be paramount at ANY sporting event.

"Storming the Court or Field" is the most ridiculous lack of security in all of college sports.

Even debating whether it should be allowed is unbelievable to me. It should be prosecuted as a crime, fined, result in expulsion from school or whatever it takes to stop it from ever happening!!

Heck not only is it a hazard for the players and coaching staffs, but also the actual people doing the "storming".

They don't truly want to stop it. It's part of the "pageantry" of college sport, in their opinion. It's stupid. People these days just do too many stupid thing. The problem is, when this tradition started, there were far less people, and far better behaved people. Now, we get stuff like this...
arky_zps3ywh3ruk.jpeg

..this isn't part of anything. This is an idiot douche acting like he's invincible and has every right to harass anyone he wants. He was EXTREMELY lucky he didn't get his jaw broken. This isn't what you should want representing your sport. But the NCAA is stuck in the past, protecting the pageantry of an "amateur" game that doesn't really exist any more.

The solution should be if you rush the court, you forfeit the game. It'd stop reaaaaaaaaal fast after that first vacated victory.

Fat boy looks like Kung Fu Panda.
