My kid will be in 5th grade. I would like to know if he looks like he would be ready for AAU or select team.

Every parent thinks their kid is decent. I was hoping some of you have seen similar ages play and compare.

I have lurked this board for a couple of years and respect the basketball acumen of the posters.

He is number 15 in black. Video is from January. When he had just turned 10.

I've coached a couple elementary and middle school teams. He looks like he can play to me. He looks like the best player on the court from watching a couple minutes of your video. It depends on where you live, but there are usually a bunch of AAU teams to choose from. The worst that could happen is that you have him try out and he doesn't make the team. It's best to start early getting your kid in a program as most coaches are bias and will pick past players when they get older. It's also important to have someone train him individually and train him on his weaknesses so he doesn't develop bad habits early.

Better than watching the Big3 3 on 3.

The truth is nothing much can be gleaned from video of a 10-year-old. My son is playing high school now at a decent level in the DC suburbs. He's been playing on AAU teams in the DC area since he was younger than 10, and played against some of the really stout teams like DC Assault and the best teams in Baltimore.

A lot of kids who were great at 10 just end up not having the size or athleticism by 15-16, and a lot of kids who were ordinary at a younger age end up with the kind of physical tools to do well in high school. For every Tyler Ulis there are 50,000 kids who had a nice looking handle at 10 but can't really compete at 5'9'' against kids who also have talent but are 6'4''.

Just encourage him to keep playing and practice as much as he has an appetite to do. What will be will be.

Great point about the athleticism part.

Enjoy these times with your son. Take the more expensive vacation. Go to places that are off the beaten path. Spend time together doing nothing in particular. They grow up in the blink of an eye and one day all you have left are the memories and a few hours at a time with them when they can spare it from their hectic lives. Trust me...I know.

A couple of suggestions.

1. He needs to be 15% tougher.
2. He should spend halftime in bathroom stalls
3. Have you thought about implementing a strict Pop-Tart regimen?
4. That's a really bad question.

He needs to be shooting jumpers..shooting layup will not get it done as he gets older. Shooters will aways find a spot

Push ball handling, proper shooting mechanics & effort.

When I say ball handing I do not mean just a little dribbling but I mean difficult drills 4 days a week.

If he has handles and can shoot he can focus on strength and all the other issues later.

If he will not work hard minimum of 4 days a week nothing else will help. Now you can go spend a fortune for someone else to do it but learn all ya can & start now.

Work on defensive fundamentals (he has decent instincts). Work on staying active when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.

You know he can take it to the basket and score when he's guarded by a weaker player. How does he help the team when he can't beat his man, or when he isn't the primary ball handler?

Needs better players on his team. I really want him to learn to play off the ball.

What does the kid want to do? Does he like the idea of playing with & against better players.

My daughter took some dance lessons one spring & really liked it. She was the best in her class. (It was an easy beginner level class). That summer, she aged out and moved up to the next level. Suddenly she was the youngest/ worst in the class. It wasn't fun anymore.

Life should be more about fun and learning when you are in grade school.

Yes I do understand what your saying. Yes your son shows a skill set and does need a more competitive situation where he can develop other skills

If you watch games together, act impressed when players he admires make defensive plays and/or have him watch only one player per possession. Good luck. Your video brought back memories of my son on the court. Before he switched to tennis and then soccer. So......keep being there.

I appreciate your feedback in reference to making sure it's fun.

I played college basketball, my brother and sister as well for D1 programs.

So it gets hard not wanting him to play as well. Thanks for the reminders.

i am not expert...lets be clear...

and i have no intention of watching the whole video. (only saw the first 1 minute, hahaha)

but movement without the ball needs to improve, and also defense is too straight up (standing around).

You should show him what he is doing and how he isn't so active when he doesn't have the ball. Teach him the little things that wins you games.

This was his first year of organized basketball. Definitely needs work on the little things.

Read the book about pete maravich (i don't recall the title) and how his dad , Press, worked with him when pete was young.
I think pete was driven to excel moreso than his dad. what i got from the book was that the boy must truly love the game and be willing to work and to live and breathe it if he wants to play at a high level. at least in pete's case.

Jeans 15...I've coached travel ball and then watched my son play it (I stepped away from coaching when that started)
* Your son is a good athlete who has potential
* He is behind travel ball players at 10 (fundamentals, effort, posture, etc)
* His only obvious skill is quickness and right hand dribble
* He can't improve playing walk-the-ball-up-the-floor + no-defense
* Are there travel ball teams in your area? Go watch them play
* If the 2 of you (and Mom) still have interest, sign up to tryout
* Prepare yourself and your son for a dose of reality
* Just practicing with them will improve him
* Travel Ball is expensive (time and MONEY)
* Support the coach. I repeat: Support the coach
* Don't sign up and then let him quit. Finish one year at least

Most important: don't do this because you want your kid to be a star or get a scholarship. If that happens, it happens. Instead do it for the right reasons:
...he loves basketball
...he wants to compete against better players
...he wants to learn fundamentals
...he wants to improve so he can play for his middle school + high school

Expense: My wife and I figured that we spent about $1500 per season (April to October) on Team fees and Travel. Gas, Meals, and Hotels on the road for Mom and Dad add up.

That EXPENSE doubled because our son played both basketball and baseball.

Note: Team Managers had to give him permission to do that, because there were schedule conflicts. Not all teams will be so cooperative. The higher the level of competition, the less likely you'll have that option.

POINT: If college scholarships is your objective, think again:
5% of high school players play College ball on some level
1% play NCAA D1
$4800 is average scholarship (includes walk-ons)

In other words, if scholarship is your dream, then play Rec ball, save $1500 a year x 10 years, focus on academics, apply for financial aid, and go to State U. It's a safer bet!

Thank you for your feedback.

This video was from 6 months ago. It was his first year playing organized basketball. So, I expected him to be lacking on the fundamentals and floor presence.

He uses his left hand as much as his right. The coach he plays for wants the offense to go right side. Something, I don't like.

Tbh. ....this video doesn't show his true skill.

Good comments. As I said, he's clearly talented.

I'm not a pro, but my first impression concerns were his body posture (standing straight up) and the slow pace he has to move due to competition. You won't believe how much faster and physically taxing it gets when you go AAU circuit (even with 10 year olds). Pressing, trapping, etc. Kids painfully learn they aren't the best, which either motivates or kills their love for the game.

My observation: Travel Ball puts your kid in a position that if he's decent talent, he'll be good. And if he's good, he'll comparatively be great. In other words, it elevates them a level above where they would be if only played Rec Ball. (Duh...the better the coaching/competition, the faster he'll reach max potential).
