My belief is that MB had a list of Drew first and Pope second all along. When Drew declined, he turned to Pope.
“Offers” to Hurley and “inquiries” about Oats were just for show. We don’t know how hard MB pushed for either - even though Hurley was supposedly offered a boatload of $, we’ll never know how motivated Mitch was to lure him in. He could have discouraged Hurley from taking it for all we know or been dismissive of other Hurley requests.
How else do you explain his apparently not discussing the job with Billy D? Time? You wait a week and figure out his interest, neither of which seems to have been done.
Speculation? Sure. But MB has gone solo here and bypassed many stronger candidates. Coincidence that Drew and Pope have religious background that Mitch would connect to? They ain’t Catholic like Billy D or Hurley, Jewish like Pearl, or divorced like Oats.
