We are the only major program offers Almonor and he becomes an important piece to us. Pope did an incredible job in finding this guy.

he plucked Ansley Almonor from the bottom of the figurative transfer portal barrel. Coming into the season, he was ranked 345th on On3’s list of players looking for a new home.

“I didn’t know Ansley at all before I was here at Kentucky,” Pope admitted in his presser on Thursday. “We have a bunch of different prongs of our portal attack, and one of them is kind of the Moneyball space of how we run with guys in the portal.“

“You have your Excel spreadsheet with all of the columns of data, and we start to say, ‘Okay, let’s forget the algorithm that puts all that data together and then ranks players, and let’s just only go to like these three data points and throughout all the other data and see who raises to the top of the list if we do that”

Enter: Almonor, a transfer from Farleigh Dickinson, flying well under everyone’s radar.

“His name came up pretty prominently on a list of guys we’re like, what do you think? Is there any way?” Pope said. “And then we started to watch film… He was a good scorer, and he had a creative vibe as a cutter. He had a real sense about, kind of finding open space”

"And clearly we’re attracted to his ability to shoot the ball, and then you hear that he beat Purdue in the first round (of the 2023 NCAA Tournament). And so there’s that little component, like man, he’s played in big games and all that stuff kind of coming together.”

Will be interesting to see Almanor's role down the stretch.

He has been massive in a lot of our big wins (MSU, UT, etc). However, he has also been non existent in too many games, as well.

He is such a valuable shooter to have on the court, but he wasn't very productive against OU (and I don't think he saw the court in the second half, IIRC).

Ideally, would like to get him about three looks from deep a game. Adds another threat when he is hitting.

I don't understand why the transfer portal needs to open the day after selection Sunday in the middle of spring football practice.

I also struggle with how a two time all conference, 16 ppg, 40% from 3, 6-7 forward is at the bottom of a list of 400 transfers.

I'm not normally this guy, but I would've found him in that list. If anything, I would probably be so proud of myself for getting him, I would not have recruited Carr or Robinson thinking I had found the next Klay Thompson.

It’s so nice to target players that fit as that 7-10 player because they fill a need. Just recruiting the best athletes you can and hoping it works out was not fun. Even in the short span he had to fill a team coach got most everything covered and so glad he did with the injuries we have had. I think people underestimate how hard it is recruiting transfers who may be in their last year to play a bench role and maybe only 8-10 mpg.

It's all about the conference he played in and the eye test that says he's not an athlete.

To me the portal for college basketball should open the Tuesday after the championship game

For at least one more season, we're going to have an nil budget advantage because pope and fueger have some key metrics they look at to find us some moneyball value. Not sure how long it will take the rest of cbb to catch up, but they will.

Hopefully though, they add in some other metrics like free throws attempted or something that indicates the player isnt just a standstill shooter. I love AA but he is absolutely a one trick pony. Its worth giving up a few % on the 3 to get some other skills, imo.

I like that Pope looks at the portal from outside the box and inside the box ways of looking at it.

I was bigger on Aliminor a month ago and wanted him to get more time. but he has kind of shown that he may be only a spot up shooter and doesn't defend or rebound at a high notch. So I'm wanting him back, but wanting him to improve.
