Reds

Elly being Elly once spring training ended.

Outside of the one good game he's had this year, he's 7-38 (.184) w/ 13 K's. 4-27 (.148) w/ 9 K's in April. K'd 5 of his last 7 AB's.

2-15 against southpaws so far this year. So much for trying to get better from the right side (.224 last year) Long overdue to go full time lefty.

At least Sadak's screaming has subsided.

No one was beating Sale unless they had a Maddux-like season.
I agree. I believe Logan Webb's comments were more about showing respect and praising the abilities of his counterpart as one of the game's best young pitchers. I do think had Greene not gotten injured, he would have finished in the top 5 of voting. As long as he keeps pitching like he is now, will be in the conversation for Cy Young every year.

Skenes would have won hands down in a full season, and is backing up his dominant rookie numbers in the early going. Zack Wheeler was as dominant as anyone last season and made 32 starts. Dylan Cease has never put up consecutive seasons as one of the games top pitchers without a drop off in the next one. I was surprised how sharp Chris Sale was after the injury-plagued seasons he has had in his 30s. 36 now and the Braves are off to a bad start like Cincinnati. That will hurt his win total much like Greene's pitching for Cincinnati. Being a league-leader in wins and K's certainly works in your favor. He was shutdown and ran out of steam in September when his velocity started to drop below 90 MPH. Atlanta will get Acuna back, but there is talk of Snitker retiring. I expect it will be Greene, Wheeler and Skenes as the front runners this season barring any injuries.

The Reds are still a poor fundamental baseball team. Especially on the base paths and in the field.
And at the plate. About the only thing they do well right now is pitch. That's until 3/5 the rotation winds up on the IL and they're forced to put Ashcraft back out there as a starter.

It's early still. Ashcraft has found his niche out of the bullpen and is actually pitching well. No need to force him back into the rotation. He needs to be left alone. Francona will manage the starting rotation better than David Bell. Abbott & Lowder's return will only give them more depth and someone shift to the bullpen that can be a rubber arm pitcher to pick up multiple innings that will preserve the bullpen over the course of the season.

Since Nick Martinez is the highest paid Reds player, his performances need to be better. $21 million paid to him, plus Candelario's $45 million contract would have been more than enough to land a star outfielder that this team needs more. It absolutely makes me sick that this year alone, Candelario is being paid $16 million and Teoscar Hernandez is getting $13.3 million. Whether or not anyone stood a chance at prying Teoscar away from LA does not absolve the Reds misuse of their payroll wasting it on players who aren't getting the job done. Like I said in the other thread, Martinez could go on a 2nd half run again like last year. That will be great if he does. What matters is what he is doing right now. Could have signed a legitimate reliever and much better outfielder than what the Reds have to give the offense a spark. I'm aware Nick left the game with the Reds in the lead. I just don't believe he was worth the $21 million when this Reds team needed to address other weaknesses in the lineup more.

Martinez definitely needs to pitch well enough that he could become mid-season trade bait to pick up a high level bat or outfielder. Problem is you'd have to trade him to a contender because they would be the only ones willing to pick up that salary. So I have a hard time thinking a contender would part ways with a High caliber player.

Pitching usually is a premium by the time the trade deadline rolls around. Milwaukee took that horrendous Frankie Montas contract off the Reds hands that would have paid him $20 million this year. Marginal starters that can fill the back end of the rotation and eat innings as Nick does would have interest on the market. By then that contract would have been paid down 2/3 when the end of July comes making him easier to move. The biggest hurdle is the Reds FO unwillingness to make moves that help this team. If you are good, they can't wait to dump you. If you suck, you'll get a $20 million contract extension and keep you around.

Agree, just hoping he pitches well enough to garner attention. If he goes to a contender, we likely get prospects out of it though. Not sure a non-contender will want that contract for the short term unless they intend to sign him for the next season.

Hunter Greene has matured from being a kid with a big arm into a grown ass man with a nasty streak. Is there a better pitcher in baseball right now? Obviously he’s going to come back to some semblance of reality over the course of the season but damn, he’s just downright filthy right now.

Both Greene and Lodolo have an ERA less than 1.00 here in the early going.
We'll see if Lodolo can keep it up tomorrow night. We've also seen Lodolo have really strong start to the season only to tank hard at some point or wind up on the IL. Hopefully he can stay healthy for a full season as well. I really hope Tito finds a way to give them an occasional rest during the season. One good thing about the rotation so far is that they have by and large not been taxing the bullpen. Bell wouldn't have let any of these guys go beyond six innings regardless of how well they were pitching.

Question for anyone who has an opinion. If Lowder and/or Burns heat up and start to make names for themselves, do Lodolo and Abbot become potential trade bait for Hopefully some hitters? I guess Singer would fit into that category as well. I think all of them are on one year deals and arbitration eligible after the season, so a strong season could mean a big raise for Lodolo or Abbott.

Comments, Cole?

Comments on what? My 100% correct assessment that he has 1 good game a week and then Sadak's screams are heard all the way to Cooperstown?

He's 8-47 in April....a blistering .170 w/ an OBP of .220
Another 3 K's yesterday.
Hitting .160 against LHP.

He's the same novelty act as a year ago....no improvement at all, at least 16 games into the season. He'll go on a 3-4 game hot streak and then people go nuts, but until he starts being somewhat consistent, then he'll continue to be the most overrated and overhyped player in MLB.

In all fairness to Nick, nearly the entire rotation been marred by injuries over these past few years. The only ones who haven't are pitchers from other organizations like Martinez. It wasn't even 2 full years ago HG placed on the IL for a midseason core strengthening program. When Nick has blown up, it is usually followed by an IL stint. Those injuries have derailed his career more than anything. 2023 was basically a lost year for him making only 7 starts. 2022 was actually a decent rookie season for him. Nick has put in a lot of work changing the grip on his pitches to avoid blisters that were a major issue for him throughout 2024. Having to relearn how to pitch with a new grip while at the big league level will obviously result in some clunkers every now and then as he figured it out. Lodolo has always had ace stuff, and it is finally coming around for him. Even Hunter Greene up until the early point of last season, took a while at the big league level to become dominant on the mound on a consistent basis.

As far as moving any pitchers at the deadline. I haven't seen anything to suggest Krall and the FO are willing to make a major move to add offense at the deadline based on past season's approach to making small deals. Even when they were 1st in the Central in 2023, Sam Moll was their only trade. Odds are the depth of this rotation will be tested to its limits by then going off the most recent seasons, and having already started the year off with 2 injuries. For any trade like that to take place, Burns would have to make the active roster before the deadline for them to feel comfortable moving a pitcher if they wanted to. Called up somewhere around the time of Paul Skenes with enough time to evaluate him opposed to when this organization did with Lowder at the end of August. I can't think of a time this organization promoted a prospect that fast to MLB roughly halfway through their first season since Leake started the year off with the Reds in 2010.

Need to make some hay (PI) coming up. O's & Rocks are pathetic.
The O's are the 5th favorite to win the World Series. They are off to a horrendous start, but they are a very good team that will more than likely make the playoffs. The Rockies are garbage, so sweep would be nice.
