Recruiting is a mess

As of today, July 12th, Kentucky is the only SEC school in the Rivals 2023 rankings with a below 3.00 ranking.
With all the fantastic recruiting gurus, how is that possible?

how is that possible?
Half of our commits are long-time targets, several from in-state. Ty Bryant, Malachi Wood, Mooreman, and the TE from Ohio had much discussion, some as long as 18 months, ago, from recruiting stories. They happen to have all received 3 Star ratings, but our coaches have been after them for months, and seen them in more than one camp on campus.

These early commits are not examples of the staff “settling,” as plenty of time is left, and they were long-time targets, not quick, stop-gap grabs to fill holes of those who have committed elsewhere.

All that said, I want to see more 4 Star commits!

I get Tennessee paid $8 million for a QB and Adidas is funding UofLs recruiting class and people are starting to panic, but we really need to calm down.

Below is the number of 4-star or better prospects we have signed in the last 5 recruiting classes. Its not crazy to think we pick up 2 or 3 more 4-stars in the next month then all of a sudden our recruiting is where it has been most years and if we go out and have a good season maybe we get into 2020 territory. As long as we dont lay an egg this season everything will be ok, I promise.

2022 - 11
2021 - 3
2020 - 9
2019 - 4
2018 - 3

Seedy or not, my fear is that Stoop's over a decade of incremental improvement of Kentucky football might be wiped away in a couple of years if we don't fully embrace the NIL environment we have been thrust into. Some schools have taken to it like fish to water. Us, seemingly not so much. I don't know Mitch personally, so this may not be the case. But I hope moral hesitation isn't handicapping our program. I don't want to go back to SEC doormat status!

It's not going to go away, it will just have a ceiling. Not all of these recruits are going to get NIL offers. They'll still get the Josh Allen, Jammin Davis and Calvin Taylor type recruits even without NIL. Something they've shown they are good at. They won't catch Georgia without NIL but they will stay ahead of UL, USC and Missouri.

That’s being optimistic. I think you will see the staff splinter and go to places where they will be on more level recruiting ground. It’s hard to always fight an uphill battle. UK will start losing out on even mid level 3 stars if other places offer even a little more money.

NIL will level itself out..kinda like new hunting gear..Big Eyes buys!!! BUT Quinn Ewers is the start of the normalization...Kid goes to Ohio State gets 1.4 mil - leaves without playing...transfers to Texas - GETS RECRUITED OVER...(Hello Mr Manning).

If I am a company and I provide 500 K for a recruit and that kid is a 3rd teamer and can't get me any marketing...I am not spending the next time on a recruit but a PROVEN commodity...this is why I believe it will normalize itself sooner than later

But I am also told I am an idiot...soooooooooooooooooooo

I believe you'll begin to see Head Coaches leaving for programs that offer "optimum" NIL support very soon. Recruiting is the life blood of a program, and NIL has become an invaluable supplement to recruiting. Sad, but unfortunately, true. You either have it, or you don't; and, you'd better have it.

UGA is handling NIL much the same as UK, they are getting deals for current players and have programs set up showing what is available, but there are no multi million dollar NIL deals in Athens. And we have lost kids because of it, the OL that committed to CU is a prime example, wanted cash and guaranteed snaps, that wasn't happening at UGA with 6 underclassmen better than him.

Recruiting class rankings are freaking stupid and no real indication of how good a class is. Certain positions take a big chunk of the top 300 for example 10% or so are qbs. On the other hand positions such as kickers and interior offensive lineman don’t get high rankings. You also have guys who are under the radar and show out in summer camps this isn’t basketball it’s alot harder to evaluate talent.

All that being said you have more room for error with the transfer portal and the ability to fill holes if your a competitive team like Kentucky. So I’m not at all worried at this point. We have a few 4 stars and if we end up with 5-10 4 stars I’m fine with class.

Taking the actual class ranking each year too literally is probably a bit stupid. Not sure it matters much if you finish 15th or 30th in a given year, but consistently finishing in a certain range is absolutely important.

There is another recent thread on this board where a poster showed the average class rankings for SEC schools over the last 10 years and the 3 schools with the highest average rankings just so happen to be the last 3 schools to win a title, and the school with the lowest ranking was Vandy - there is clearly something to them.

Teams that have won national championships all have one thing in common, they recruit at an elite level. Now to get to 8-10 wins is one thing, getting to 14-15, is another level.

Well said as usual. Thats what seems to go misunderstood every recruiting season. Why would coaches take a committment and lock up a player so early of they didnt really like them and think they fit exactly what they were looking for? They wouldnt and Stoops and Co rely on their instinct well before the stars settle out.

And its not just on one or two anomilies either, its been that way on a bunch of reallly good players we've had that have been differnce makers for us. They got on Landon Young real early before he had really made a name for himself in football. Was more known for his track exploits (discus and shot) at the time and just about 240 pounds. Just saw his raw strength and build and athleticism and what he could grow into.

Having a lot of instate talent every year is a prerequisite

Too many live and breath by the individual commits to UK and UK’s rival apparently over the entire cycle. If UK lost a recruit then I’d wait until NSD to draw conclusions. If UK got a big commit id also wait until NSD to draw conclusions.

even that would be premature. Best measure is wait 3-4 seasons and see how multiple classes turned out on the field. Rankings do matter but bigger the sample size the better the measurement.

Football is even more dominated by the quality of recruit than basketball. It's not even close. Football has everything to do with recruiting (and rankings mostly indicate that.). A whole lot more kids with Bryce Young's rival rating ends up being top players than those with Randall Cobb or Josh Allens rival rating. I would guess that Georgias vaunted defense had more four and five stars running around than they did three star kids.

think it's because the Dixon Kid is a zero star (for right mow) and its weighing down the average. Could be bumped up if he has a good season. Look for that rating to climb regardless as Kentucky starts stacking some of these 4 star guys like Anthony Brown amongst others. Think this class finishes anywhere between 25-35 with as many as 11 4 stars which was about the same as they had last year if not the exact same amount.

The people suppling this NIL money are not companies looking for a return on their investment. They are boosters looking to buy wins for their college. Now, will boosters get tired of putting money like that in if the wins don’t increase? We will see.

Have to start heading out NIL or Stoops won’t stay around long. Was just starting to recruit at a high level before NIL became legal. He has the ability to recruit well but can’t be at a school where his hands are tied. Something has to give soon or UK will be back to the basement of East in no time.

That is going to be the thing right there. It's one thing to pay a kid who has already gotten on campus and did something of value on the field.

It's completely another to pay outrageous amounts for a kid who hasn't even played his senior season yet.

Reggie Bush's mom got a 750K house for him to go to USC. NIL is no different. It's just legal now. You know how they say locks just keep the honest people out? NIL took the locks off, threw em in the trash.

Wasn't Young a big time wrestler too? Maybe not NCAA wrestler good, but an elite HS wrestler, seems like I remember that.

Class rankings on July 12 are totally meaningless. They don't sign for another 5 months. The object of football is to win football games. Stoops is about to pass Bear Bryant for all time wins at UK. He is winning football games, including bowls. There are good reasons to believe he will have another strong season in the fall.

Regardless of the lack of respect that some people are paying to our 2023 class, I like the list of players who have visited Lexington recently. Some of these visitors will become Wildcats. Some exciting players are already committed to the class, and that will only get better. Stoops has earned our respect, and I trust his judgment.

If one is the knee jerk poster type I wonder if that changes things on days when a four star like Anthony Brown commits?

Some might change their point of view. But Avery Stuart and Shamar Porter are the gems of Stoops' class so far. Getting their commitments was a coup.

Everyone is different. No coaching staff gets every player they offer. Is the glass half-empty or half-full? Depends on how you look at things.

One thing we know for sure is Stoops is about to surpass Bear Bryant for all time wins at UK. Barnhart hired Stoops and has given him and his staff a series of raises. Barnhart renovated Kroger Field and has maintained UK's practice and office facilities at the necessary SEC level. Another practice facility is on the boards now.

Not long ago, posters were beating the recruiting room and the sound system into the ground. Until the bowl invitation in 2016, many posters insisted that Stoops should be fired. Many wanted Bobby Petrino. There are certain regular posters on this website who are just negative about everything. They still come out of the woodwork to slam our coaches during the increasingly infrequent bad weeks. Some enjoy the anonymity of the internet as cover for attacking Stoops, Barnhart, and anyone who brings up inconvenient facts that vindicate the athletics department. These are just unhappy people, and they can't help themselves. Others are more sensitive to events and developments, but still negatively biased. Once in a while, a poster will acknowledge they were worried about something with the program but it turned out better than expected. The reason I still post here is that some fans have acknowledged the obvious and developed positive attitudes about our athletics department, coaches, and players.

Anthony Brown is an excellent prospect, although not really a whole lot different from Jordan Anthony in his potential impact. Although the arrival of Will Levis and Liam Coen last year brought a new dimension, Stoops has primarily been successful at UK by controlling the line of scrimmage. His coaches have been very good at developing offensive and defensive linemen. At this stage of program development, we will see if Zach Yenser and Anwar Stewart can continue to do that as well as their predecessors. We will find out if Yenser, Stewart, Rich Scangarello, Mike Stoops, Scott Woodward, and Chris Collins can recruit as well as Jon Sumrall, Steve Clinkscale, and other departed former coaches did. Those are unknowns, but the early indicators suggest the positive momentum will continue. I am always interested to see how these things go. But change is part of life, and I have not seen anything yet to suggest Stoops can't handle it.

Same boosters have no problem pooling together $10 to $20M to buy out & fire good winning coaches like Malzahn, Mullin, Moorhead

If NIL fueled recruiting doesn't work at some places, I bet those types of people throw even more money out there instead of cutting it off
