Exactly, what other school jumps to this hard of a self-imposed penalty? It's usually a) nothing, let's roll the dice and see if NCAA actually finds anything or 2) let's do something small and play it safe.

The problem I have, and the NCAA should have, with a ban on this season is that it really doesn't address the fact that recruits from former teams received impermissible benefits, meaning they should have been ineligible and thus all wins vacated. That's what UL is fearing the most, so they went to this extreme to protect the past as much as the future.

I will say though, all these people saying "what did players on this team do to deserve it"...well look at some of the recruits the NCAA spoke with about the matter, it includes freshman like Blakeney. Guys like Mitchell, Snider, Donovan had been recruited for years..so don't think there's not a chance they took part in this.

The first sentence of the article is all you need to know..

"A former NCAA enforcement staffer said the University of Louisville self-imposing a postseason ban on its men's basketball team is a sign that "something serious is going to go down" once the NCAA completes its investigation and doles out punishment to the school."

Rinse and repeat this...UL is doing all it can to avoid having to forfeit 2 final fours and a national title in 2013 as 2 players for sure (maybe more) were part of the prostitution ring. This is all about keeping this wins/banners as this year was at best a decent team but not a NCAA title contender.

Ul fans narrative: She's lying about everything. She needs to go to jail for pimping her daughters. They haven't proved anything. Fire Ramsey not anyone who is in the athletic department. Don't talk about it being an athletic department scandal so maybe we convince ourselves it's an academic issue

This Ricky Jones character on the radio comparing the NCAA's power to slavery, segregation, child labor laws, etc.
Yep. UofL fans will cheerlead this guy until they realize that he's essentially stating how he would be for them fighting the NCAA no matter how many serious violations are unearthed during their own investigation.

UofL and their minions are chasing their tails at this point. The minute that they think they've gotten some traction on something that might lead to them not being in an awful situation, they end up back in the same predicament that they sought escape.

This whole thing is about ready to collapse in on them and it's not going to be pretty because so many of those people have spent the past several months in complete denial instead of preparing themselves for the inevitable reconstruction.

I think some of the Floyd Street crew could benefit from the wisdom of Will Rogers: Never miss a good chance to shut up.

I don't see UL having to vacate any final fours or titles over some hookers being paid to entertain recruits.

That's the thing.... I don't think this was playing it safe. The post-season ban was UL saying "with what we know, what is the absolute least we think the NCAA would hit us with?". They know they are in serious trouble and are hoping the NCAA will let them skate with just this post-season ban. The issue is that UL/Pitino have been thumbing their nose at this the entire time and waiting til Feb to self-impose. I doubt the NCAA will look kindly on this, especially knowing the depth of the scandal (and that's only based on what is known publicly... who knows what else was uncovered).

UL has been operating on the edge of "rogue" for several years now. All the small things that have gone on will not help when it comes to the NCAA's actions against them.

In the NCAA's eyes, it is impermissible benefits, no different than paying the recruits and players money. That renders players ineligible. And here the impermissible benefits are about as bad as you can get in terms of the public perception.

Unless you're also breaking the law, MULTIPLE TIMES.
Right, which is why I said this is the worst kind of impermissible benefits. I noted that this constitutes impermissible benefits just like money in order to explain that players can lose eligibility, which in turn can lead to vacated games.

I think this is the kind of thinking people have in mind when they talk about the 'death of outrage.'

We're talking about HOOKERS IN DORMS, PAID FOR BY THE COACHING STAFF.

This isn't about $50 handshakes.....

You got it K_TIME. As they said in the video, the investigation isn't even concluded, but they've seen enough to know that they're up the proverbial creek without a paddle. So, they're trying to get ahead of this. And yes, this is definitely an admission that much, if not all, of the allegations in that book are true. And yes, they're really thinking of that Title and the 2 Final Fours as they do this. They're hoping the NCAA will let them keep those.

But let me say this: if there is any justice done here, and if these hookers were used to get any of the guys who played in those final 4 years or the title year to come to Louisville (and there is reason to believe it to be so), those banners MUST come down. It's cut and dry in my mind. This is one of the most reprehensible things I've ever heard about in recruiting. And it's not just a recruiting violation if the players already on the team also participated. It's impermissible benefits to those players as well. What we're dealing with here is a corrupt organization. The director of basketball operations was running a whore house from the men's basketball dorm to entertain recruits, their parents, and the current players. This was part of the package- part of the appeal of going to UL.

And I will never believe that SOMEBODY didn't know about this. I think Pitino definitely knew. He can act righteously indignant all he wants when the cameras are rolling. He's mad alright. He's mad they got caught. These were desperate measures born out of a desperate attempt to out-recruit UK and Calipari. And it was going on right there on campus, right there in the men's basketball dorm. He knew.

They why did Memphis have to vacate a final four due to "alleged" but never proven cheated SAT scores by Derrick Rose? We can go on to all kinds of teams that vacated wins/banners, etc..

Why would UL get off the hook?

This has been discussed about a thousand times. The testing agency invalidated the SAT score. That constitutes all the proof the NCAA needed.

What if some of the players who were entertained, come to Louisville? Don't you think that was impermissible benefits, that were not granted by other schools who were recruiting these players?

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!

I can see uofl fans now..."well a truck driver in okalona said this isn't true, so he's telling the truth, and there's no legitimacy to this article"

They are grasping whatever they can and ignoring teality.
