There's this thing called a scholarship to play football. That should count for ALL games, not just player pick and choose options. Kids sit out of the bowl game for professional reasons, they should have to repay some of their huge scholarship and medical fees at a pro-rated amount for the game purposely missed.
Many of these normal Joe's you're trying to use as an analogy don't get paid if they don't work, especially if it's voluntary. Injury is one thing, but this new fangled sitting out to prep for the NFL or protect their brand/value should be punished the same way blue collar hourly workers get "punished" if they call in to go fishing.
Workers walk out and strike all the time for more pay, time off, benefits, etc.
Again, the university already has that scholarship money, they're going to spend it on someone or something. Would you rather it be another worthless administrator or department? You want the Dean of Dipshitery to get a raise?
The scholarship is essentially a "benefit". Blue collar workers don't just get benefits. They get paid. How many people are working for vacation, health/dental, etc...but not getting a check?
Infact a lot of companies will pay for employees to go to school in addition to all of the above...so essentially, they're providing a scholarship while also paying a salary, providing time off, paying overtime, holiday, hazard, and allotting for an occasional strike.
I would agree that the BCS and 2 super conferences split into whatever they're evolving into, and the all the players are officially making money there should be some sort of legal framework and everything is on the up and up.
All that will come naturally though because Uncle Sam will make sure of it. He'll sniff out some money and benefits.
I honestly wouldn't have a problem with universities looking at kids and saying hey, you pay us. Not only scholarship money, but your facilities are on our campus...pay rent.
At a certain point, the top 30-40 revenue sports programs/athletes won't even be connected to the University/Academics. Those athletic departments are self-sustaining as it is now, and in fact I think some if not all give to the University.
