Quick scouting report of Troy

Death to Troy

If Kentucky can get past them somehow, I consider that a successful season after what we had to deal with Calipari.

Get into the second weekend would be icing on the cake.

23 to 24 wins in Pope's first year is about as good as you can expect, given the injuries this season.

I'm really optimistic about the future.

I'll preface by saying I have only watch 1 game of theirs this year and they lost to Arkansas. That game was much closer than the score indicates. Troy was in it until around the 10 minute mark. Anyway, this is a quick scouting report...

Record 23-10 (13-5 Sun Belt)
They were a 3 seed in their conference tournament. Won 3 games to claim the championship.
Starters-
1Thomas Dowd, F, Soph, 6'8" 225
Min- 25.2pts- 9.8 rebs- 6.8 ast- 1.0
2Marcus Rigsby, G, Junior, 6'3" 203
Min- 21.5 pts- 6.9 rebs- 2.8 ast- 1.7
4Myles Rigsby, F, Soph, 6'6" 190
Min- 28.0 pts- 12.0 rebs- 4.0 ast- 1.4
12Tayton Conerway, G, Senior, 6'3" 186
Min- 30.3 pts- 14.3 rebs- 4.6 ast- 4.8
15Jackson Fields, F, Junior 6'8" 210
Min- 21.7 pts- 7.9 rebs- 4.7 ast- 0.6

Conerway, averages nearly 3 steals a game. won the Sun Belt MOP
Dowd was on the all tournament team.

This is their 3rd tournament appearance, their first since 2017. They have yet to win a game.

Defense is their strong suit. They are in the top 50 in the country in defensive field goal percentage, points allowed, blocks, steals, rebounding, and total field goals made.

They 0-2 vs AP top 25 teams.
L vs #18 Arkansas 49-65
L vs #15 Houston 42-62

Per ESPN overview:
Troy doesn't dazzle offensively: they're among the worst in the tournament in 3 point shooting (30%) and turnover rate (19%). However, they make up for it by being one of the best in the country at offensive rebounding rate and with a strong defense that forces opponents into mistakes.
They were in a four way tie for co-champs in the Sun Belt conference standings (which is kind of funny), so the 3rd seed in the conference tournament is a little misleading.

So far this Kentucky lost all the games against from the state of Alabama…..maybe one of guys can prove to be Ulysses and one Achilles and defeat the Trojans…..

They have a former juco player that’s pretty good. They defense is good, rebounding is good and they can slow down the game ….
I think we should win this one.

Starting line up :

Marcus Rigsby Jr 6’3
T. Conerway 6”3 sr best player of conference , can score, assist, steal , rebound….former juco player
M Rigsby so 6”6 - younger brother of Marcus, good athlete average 12 pts , 4 rebounds a game…
Dowd - 6’8 sophomore , white guy , can shoot the 3 if open
Fields 6’ 8 a junior athletic, doesn’t take many 3# but he can score if let open…

Campbell and Bellamy good subs both shooting 36 37 % from 3 give them lift from bench as well Seng and Valdez.

They go 11 deep and they are running pretty good, Now that I am watching this will not be an easy matchup.

Our game plan should be go inside , force double team then go outside. If we run our typical offense we might let them hang too much and they can become dangerous…. They are a very confident team right now.

Watch the last 6 minute against Arkansas State in the title game. They blow a decent lead , Arkansas state was up by 2 points, after that was some back and forth, and it seems that they Troy turn it up another level….

Their guards and bigs work well togeTher and understand spacing….. this will be a hard game for us.

They don’t keep concentration at high level all game. We need to jump on them early and don’t give him any hope.they can be a dangerous team . They enough and athletes to hang with us if we allow them.

Pound them inside and open up the 3.

This is the exact thinking that gets you smoked. It’s why I say to show them the other game(s) that were supposed to be “scrimmage” games.
Except I'm not on the team. Of course the team should not think like that. They will anyway because they are human.

The fact remains, we would be ridiculed for putting this cupcake on the schedule. We got a gift here. Don't take it for granted. But don't be scared either.

They've lost one game since February 8. While I believe we will win, I'll still be nervous the first 10 minutes if we haven't established a lead. A hangover from the past few years.

CBS Headliner "Kentucky bounced early again ?"

Best first-round game

(3) Kentucky vs. (14) Troy: Kentucky fans likely still have some residual PTSD from losing as a 3-seed last year to 14-seed Oakland in Round 1. I'm sorry to say this first-round game for the Wildcats has the potential to produce a similar outcome. This Kentucky team is walking wounded without Jaxson Robinson and Kerr Kriisa, and Lamont Butler's lingering shoulder injury is cause for concern, too. With the Wildcats at something far less than 100%, they draw a Troy team that has won six straight -- five of them by double figures -- and isn't afraid to play physical and attack. What it lacks in shooting competency it makes up for by getting to the free throw line and generating second-chance looks on the offensive glass.

I think we match up very well with them. Stick to our assignments and hit our shots, stay focused, higher energy and hustle, we will win. Protect the ball, get after them defensively and take advantage of the mismatches. We've become a much better defensive team, and we can do well in this game and have some fun.

Except I'm not on the team. Of course the team should not think like that. They will anyway because they are human.

Although injuries have created a lot of issues, we have overcome a lot. The main concern i have with this game is that we have seen all year that this team has played down to lessor teams and lost to them. Troy is a lessor team but a tournament team which makes them dangerous.

I have this feeling we finally overcome this issue but I am still concerned. It will be a close game in the first half and we pull away in the second. We have seen this all year also.

Go Cats, BTW, We have have the best coach leading us.

I used to take first round games easy, knowing we were gonna cruise. NOT ANYMORE! Thanks Cal and parity. I'm approaching this as a game we can absolutely lose. We better come out ready to play. A lot of the intimidation teams have had when playing us has disappeared the last 5 years. Even though Cal is no longer the coach I would show the Troy team, if I was their coach, the losses to Oakland and St. Peters. And truthfully in my day I used to LOVE going against Big name schools and players when everyone is counting you out.
