Question about using the helmet communication on defense

I understand on offense it's always the quarterback and if your starter gets hurt, the backup just goes in and he has it. On defense, players don't play every snap so what happens when that guy goes out? If someone else has it would they be able to play at the same time and they just are on honor system not to have both turned on?

And actually I just realized it does happen on offense because we have both Wimsatt and Vandagriff in at the same time.

They have some control.
Somebody turns off the speaker with 15 seconds on the play clock.
So I imagine they have multiple helmets with speaker, and just turn a specific defense one on for the play.
