With all of the TV timeouts, it simply doesn't matter. IMHO, we currently have two halves with each divided into 5 periods of approximately four minutes each.
PS: IMHO, college basketball was a much more physically demanding game and a much more exciting game before all of the TV timeouts.
Side note: With the coaching timeouts, TV timeouts, halftime and all of the fouling it takes about 2 hours to play 40 minutes of basketball. So, in a 2-hour (120-minute) game, your actually watching BB only about one-third of the time.
