I have never understood why you don't offer a kicker or a punter a scholarship. They are one of the few people on the team that can change the outcome of a game.

Alabamas punter is an excellent example.. he can definitely alter a game. Talk about changing field position in a hurry!

he was better than most place kickers we have had. which games did he cost us? the tennessee game was a bad snap.

I understand that walk on QB Mattingly is also a punter. Sure would be nice to have a QB that is also a punter for some of those trick plays.

Primarily becasue if you are good enough, you can get specialists to walk on and save the ride for a position player - the Bigs almost never use a scholarship on a specialist. Joker used them becasue he had to. If Stoops can get guys like this as walk-ons that speaks well for their ability to sell the future of our program.

I can see offering a punter or Kicker a scholarship, but not right out of High School unless they are a kicking phenom. Bring 2-3 in as walk-ons and let them earn the job. once they earn the job, then give them a scholarship.

I would rather have a guaranteed kicker than an a player who is an athlete you give a scholarship to and you don't even know what position you are going to play him in. People under estimate the power of a good kicking game.

I'm pretty sure our current kicker and punter are both on scholarship. I'm pretty sure when we need another placekicker we will be using a scholly on him.

I think I remember in Saban's first two years he did not offer scholarships for punter/kicker, after the kicking game cost him a couple of games he started using a scholly. Having someone that has the ability to flip the field is huge.

We do. Last season was the first year in awhile we only had two kicker/punters on scholarship.
