Besides the fact that Cal is notoriously vague about the nature of injuries, updates, etc., does it also seem like we have injuries that sideline our guys notably longer than originally predicted? Just some guys over the last handful of years I remember:

  • Aaron Bradshaw - Cal originally says he doesn’t think Bradshaw will miss any regular games. Now we’re in mid November; has he even practiced at 100% recently?
  • Ugo Onyenso - initially says Onyenso will be out “a couple months.” That was in July. Will he even play in 2023?
  • Terrence Clarke (RIP) - the injury situation was just an absolute debacle. Constant prolonging without any real explanation from an injury that he suffered in a game and played through. Need not say more.
  • CJ Fredrick - Cal, verbatim: “had a minor procedure today that needed to be done at some point before the season. He and his family decided to be proactive and have it done now rather than wait. We are all happy it went well and he will be back better than ever and ready to go for the season!” CJ wouldn’t play a single game that season.

I don’t know. Maybe being ultra, ultra conservative with guys just comes with the territory when you recruit blue chippers who have handlers pulling strings and applying pressure to make sure that their guys don’t get rushed back. But it just feels like the injuries our guys go through frequently end up taking longer and requiring more ramp up than originally suggested or expected.
