We can say "boy, if Alex just got that rebound" or "if Alex just hadn't have stepped out of bounds" or "if Alex hadn't have missed that layup" or "man, if Alex would've hit that free throw", but it doesn't matter. Everyone has been saying these things for 5 years now and the fact is that he is a below average, unreliable college player. Expecting anything more is just foolishness. He isn't going to do the things, because below average players don't do those things. Let's give it a rest. If he does something good, consider it a bonus. Otherwise, you're wasting breath.
