im done with the "Which Poythress shows up today?" Game all of BBN plays every game. One game it's Superman and next 4 it's Tampax City. I can't remember a player squandering his talent due to his head since Richard Madison or Charles Hurt. I gotta sY it is painful to watch him not give a care. You can tell by first tv timeout if he is checked out

It's not an effort thing...guys like Madison, Poythress, Hurt have great bodies but zero skill. Can't dribble, can't shoot, no touch, and weren't huge guys...and Poythress isn't a quick kid laterally either....with all that you have to have skill in b-ball to be a good player. Poythress can play ten more years and have 3 bad games for every good game.

Be disappointed today but he simply got poked in the eye and needed medical attention. Bad timing since his defense and hustle would have helped extend the lead. He missed about 7 minutes of the 2nd half and still gave the team more than Lee or Skal.

He also got hit in the eye and sunk two free throws later with it swollen . Just making baskets isn't everything , he blocked some shots and played good defense . I don't have an issue with this game from him .

Poy is trying. the guards do him no favors though. He needs to give Horace Grant a call on how to play the game without EVER getting a play set for you or having guards who shoot with you in rebounding position!!

Actually, he worked his butt off on defense and was on the floor after balls a bunch.

He did get a couple nice blocks, but it was against terrible competition and we still lost

Maybe Poythress needs to eat a Snicker bar before every game.

Poythress is inconsistent offensively but he plays good defense. I have more of a problem Lee than Poythress. I wouldn't have a problem with sitting Lee for Willis if Willis plays like he did today. But that's a big "if".

He's an athlete. Makes some great plays, but he lacks skills or balance or coordination or something. Idk how many times he spins out of bounds or too far under the basket. If he makes a move with the ball with anyone around him, I feel nervous. He's good in space to make an athletic rebound, dunk or block, but he has no offensive skills. Just what it is. Not good if we rely on him for anything other than some plays here and there.

Not sure what a set play for him other than a lob would do. He can't finish. Aside going to him beginning of 2nd half (which we stopped doing for some reason) vs UofL (a scrub was guarding him), he doesn't exactly make the most of his touches in the post. He can't create from the perimeter either, his ball handling is poor.

Gotta utilize him in the PnR like Cal did against Alabama. Other than that just tell him to crash the boards, dunk any dumpoffs he gets from Ulis, Briscoe, Murray and play positional defense without fouling.

That's the best version of AP that we have any chance of seeing, IMO.

Not defending them at all, but our 3 guards shot something like 16 for 51 and our bigs shot 5 for 11....

TRue that, got like 2 real plays ran for him, too bad as he has moves and some touch.

Alex reminds me of a young man we had many years ago that was from his neck of woods in Tennessee.
The kid came in with all sorts of high praise, could do it all, but never did seem to grasp the spotlight and pressure of being counted on.
His name was Derrick Hord.
Same as Alex, great kid, super student, from Tennessee, everything about Alex reminds me of Derrick Hord.
Back in Joe B. days.

If I remember right Derrick started as a So. Had a good season but regressed his JR. year and even more his SR. year. So I get the comparison. Derrick was a SF/SG though.

Certainly a less than pleasing game from our backcourt.

Always thought poy would break out. Have defended him for 3+ years. I accept now he at this point is what he is. We will get a couple more glimpses of that awesome potential this year and the rest of the time he will leave us shaking our heads lol.

Richard Madison actually had a really nice rainbow outside shot. He didn't get much of a chance to use it however, under Hall and then Sutton.

I always thought that Madison would have been used much differently and been more effective if he had played under Pitino.

I don't think it's effort or skill - it's just personality. He's a laid back kid who can only rev up in spurts. Going hard is a conscious decision. On, off, on, off. As opposed to some guys who just go go go, high motor guys. He can't change his personality any more than he could will himself to be 6'11 by tomorrow.

With his athleticism, I wonder if he could play tight end, a la Antonio Gates.....

I think the Richard Madison comparison is spot on. Waited years for the Master Blaster to reach his potential and he never did. Same with Poythress. Just ain't gonna happen. Use him off the bench and let other play.

I actually think about Roderick Rhodes when I think of Poy. Both have had serious flashes but just never became what we hoped thy would.

Rhodes and Hord both had great basketball skills. Alex is an athlete.

We are upset that Alex does not meet our vision of his potential.

Doesn't mean it really exists.

Crazy thing is Poythress could very well end up in the 1,000 pt club in just 3 yrs and a few gms.
