Kyle Tucker's CJ Fredrick article

Frederick wasn't expected to play hardly at all at the Duke game due to him only practicing a few times with the team in the past 2 weeks. Another reasan Cal did not put him in was that we needed a someone who could stop Keels and he was not the answer.

This is from last year before the Duke game...

CJ is supposed to practice tomorrow for the first time in months,” Calipari said. “It’s the same. When he gets his opportunity, it’ll be ‘does he deserve more or less?’ He may not be ready.”

Frederick had minor surgery in July to fix an issue that had been lingering since his time at Iowa. At UK basketball’s media day a few weeks ago, Fredrick said that he was mostly back but still needed the official clearance from the training staff. It appears he’s gotten that and will join his teammates on the court tomorrow as Kentucky prepares for No. 9 Duke on Tuesday night.

“I’m pretty much back,” Fredrick said. “But at this point after taking a little bit of time off you just have to be smart with your body. The way we run, the way we practice, you just can’t expect to go out there up and down for three hours. It’s just gradually working my way back. I’m starting to do things live,” he said. “I did all of the stuff in practice that isn’t contact and I did about 20 minutes of live stuff.”

CJ is a much better defender than Tyty. Now maybe his lack of practice time hurt his chances of playing in that game but it wasn’t for a lack of defense.

The one that bothers me most is the plantar fasciatis, because isn't that something that often returns?

And WOW, he was 22 last July, so will be 23 this July, and still just a JR eligibility wise? When I turned 23, I had just (couple weeks earlier) started my 2nd year of graduate school.
He would only be a junior eligibility wise because of COVID, though he might would have also gotten a medical redshirt for last year. From the first day you step foot on a College campus, you get 5 years to use 4 years of eligibility. No matter how many years you play, you have to get a waiver to play past that 5 year mark, regardless of how many years you use. COVID gave everybody in college and additional year of eligibility, and an additional year to use it.

I guess the plantar fasciitis is pretty variable in regard to severity and effect. Another poster and I were discussing it on here. My issue with it was an easy fix - stretching for just a minute completely took the pain/soreness away temporarily and continuing that routine for a week or so basically alleviated the problem (although it does come back a little occasionally, but it's no real issue). He, on the other hand, had a lot more difficulty with it, and was still suffering a lot from it.

But on the issue of the hamstring being completely ripped away from the bone, are you saying that really doesn't concern you? Just curious whether you might have some knowledge or a good anecdotal report on that or something.

I had it in both feet about 15 years ago. Lasted 6 weeks or so. Never came back.

My experience was nothing like this. My feet hurt so bad I had to walk on the outside edges of them. I basically had to keep off them as much as possible for 6 weeks IIRC, though it might have actually been longer.

That's crazy that it was so painful and problematic for 6 weeks and then it was just gone in your case. You must be living right, as they say.

If this story is anywhere accurate then he is an amazing individual. He was impressive in his interview with Sharpe last year. If he can get thru the Bahama trip and remain healthy it will be a minor miracle(and he deserves at least a couple of those)

Well he may have a glass body but

Frankly that doesn’t mean ish to me compared to that other little detail in this article:

He was cleared for the Duke game and Cal didn’t know he was injured and Cal didn’t even want to try playing him?

If it’s true Cal thought he was healthy—which CJ sells pretty well—then that can only mean one of two things:

1–Cal is just so stubbornly dedicated to whatever he happens to be thinking at the beginning of a night that he’s just never gonna make any worthwhile in-game decisions and we just can’t win six games in March/April that way. Can’t be done without Anthony Davis.

or

2–Despite all the hype we heard over the summer about his defense being the real surprise of the summer and not even too far off elite, kid must hardly be able to play at all.

We got humiliated in that Duke game wire to wire. Zero reason not to give a kid a look-see once that game got going.

I sure hope CJ was embellishing or just not realizing that Cal already knew he was hurt bad. Because the only other possibilities are even worse than him being injury prone.
Only one solution to this dilemma. Go find another team to follow.

Dude that actually defended 2-10 Joker is actually on the hoops board telling people to find a new team to follow, rich

Gives a history of CJ's injuries (including specific details that were never made public before).

Sorry it's behind a paywall. Here are a few nuggets:

The article goes on to describe his girlfriend's (Blair Green, #5 from the women's team) torn achilles and how they pushed each other to work hard and recover from their surgeries.

Good article.
Seems like a good kid but Kentucky relying on him is going to be a bad end result

Lot's of positive posts on here. :(
Well this tidbit gave me some hope, maybe it'll do the same for you: Although Fredrick had a very severe injury, one that would actually seem to be hard to come back from and ever play again really, Khris Middleton of the Milwaukee Bucks had a ruptured hamstring and surgical repair in September of 2016 and played the following season - AND played well that season and all the seasons since. I don't know about anybody else, but that makes me feel better about the possibility that Fredrick will be able to play than anything else I've read.

That's great news. After looking up his stats, I see you actually understated how well he did that next season. He played all 82 games, with career highs (at that point in time) in minutes, rebounds, and points per game.

Always great to see guys come back from major injuries/surgery.

I developed it in my 50s and it took years to go away. Both feet. I kept 2 cans of green beans in my office desk and when I could, I'd take off my shoes and roll the cans with my feet. No prednisone or other anti-inflammatory meds. I couldn't say how long it took exactly but one day I noticed that I hadn't needed to use those cans of beans for awhile. I wondered about taking the beans home and having them for dinner, but I only wondered for a second or so.

I think it also helped that Banchero was out a good portion of the 2nd half if I’m not mistaken. And we still couldn’t capitalize. That was very frustrating. Tyty gave us nothing that game and the talent and coaching gap was just too much to overcome.
Yeah we never threatened that game, just hung on the best we could. Had it been played in December or January I think we win.

Is it me, or did he have his toe on the line on a lot of those 3's in that clip, especially the first rack.

"Players like Frederick"...means what?

UK fans are obsessed with 3 point shooting specialists. We see it again and again over the years...if you can shoot a 3, you are a God to some of our fans. It does not matter if you do nothing else well (Frederick does other things well so he is not an example of this), if you can shoot the 3, you are a fan favorite here.

There is no way on planet earth this kid is gonna stay healthy for a full year, there just isn't. I hope I'm wrong and he does but I just don't see it.
The wonderful “I hope I’m wrong” qualification. What is it - no way on planet earth - or NOT?

There’s a lot more in that article, especially about how Fredrick and Blair Green supported each other through their respective injuries and worked out together. The OP just pulled the paragraphs that describes the injuries.

People are forgetting about both of these players and what deadly shooters they are. Hopefully this will be a great year for both of them!

Honestly, we shouldn't need him to win the vast majority of our games. Obviously you want him in rythym.. but maybe he should be on a minute restriction for the season. Never let him play more than 20. And then, if he's still healthy come SECT and NCAAT time.. you can roll him out more.

Ok...I hope that's what you meant

I hope CJ plays a lot of minutes and stays healthy all year long. He seems like a great kid and would be a deadly weapon.
My hope is that Cal gets out of his own way. He doesn't value shooting as much as he should. Look at the teams winning titles at the NCAA and NBA levels. They play outside in now, so when you have a guy that can hit like CJ can, you really need to play him as much as you can to open up driving lanes. It’s really just common sense. 3>2.

It seemed to me to be a dead lift of a lot of text. If you had cut down a tree for firewood you'd be POed if someone backed a truck up a helped themselves to it. A laborer is worthy of his pay.

What a weak post.
It’s funny to see you post in a CJ Fredrick thread. You lost a ban bet last year on this very topic.

I'm amazed at how you still continue to post, but maybe you get a free pass, since you have that hall monitor sache thing going on.

Do you want to go double or nothin'? You want to bet on the November Michigan State game? I bet CJ plays less than 15 minutes. You taking 25 minutes or more again?

Man, I love the analogy. I sell firewood on the side and I had a guy try to steel a bunch of ash logs I put on the ground. It almost got ugly.
