Possible OC Replacement?

Liam coen is option number one if he is available. After that it may be time for Kentucky to commit to the Gimmick crap and find a coordinator from that type of system

We tried it twice since stoops has been here. It didn’t work. Stoops doesn’t recruit around that style. It needs to be a solid pro style offense. That my favorite offense so I’m rooting for coen 2.0

You have no proof that stoops dictates the offense. He says he’s hands off. I want to believe him because that means improvement will come with a new OC. What we do know is coen clearly took the reins last year.
How do you explain that our offense has basically looked the same through 5 OCs? We’ve had OCs with very high powered offense completely switch their style when they come here.

I’ve seen Stoops yelling on the sideline to run the ball…..see the So Carolina game a few years ago with Kemp running the wildcat. Stoops was calling those plays.

What system do the Eagles run? Or TCU? Like using a mobile QB in spots but also have some sophisticated route trees. A system that has 3-, 5- and 7- step drop backs. Seems like we don't have many quick hits that can keep the defense back from the LOS and pick up short yardage consistently.

Didn't Stoops just make a comment a few weeks ago about "It's just who we are" regarding the offense. I would say that he pretty much influences the slow methodical tempo that we use. We have always been in the bottom half of CFB in snaps per game since Stoops has been here..

Generally nothing works. One lone season were coens offense finished in the high 30’s. It’s deflating at times to think we have to locate an oc within the 2% of coaches that might figure it out here at least a little bit.

You talking about JoJo Kemp running wild scoring three tds and us winning 45-38? Stoops should call all the plays 😂

After the ole miss game he said ‘we need to get back to…’ all of that stuff. It’s not running/passing and all that to me…it’s that every single thing seems to revolve around milking clock. And if that dictates everything every season it’s going to be tough.

So how do you explain Coen last year?

Wandale is single season leader ever at UK
Levis got notable to be NFL prospect
We averaged 32 pts a game

Last year looked nothing like Gran or Shannon Dawson year.

Finally, I'd also argue it's not reasonable to argue Stoops was handccuffing Neal Brown. Neal left to be HC at Troy and we had a good offense in 2nd year with Towles considering the talent level we were growing at that time.

Coen was a better play caller. Execution was significantly better. The passing game and play action play calls still fit into stoops “complimentary” game plan. Comes down to Coen was a much better play caller.

I would be totally against an Air-Raid or similar style of offense. First, how many Air Raid teams (or quick tempo) ever have a decent defense? Very, very few. Second, it can and is effective in CFB but does nothing to prepare kids for the NFL. Leach has never been a great recruiter, even at QB, because his system just doesn't translate to the next level. I know it's not UK's job to get kids ready for the NFL but it does figure into a kid's decision as to which school to attend at least to some degree.

I am all in favor of using the QB on a limited basis to run/pass like a TCU or Baylor or even UT. I don't want to see 10+ called runs by our starting QB as that's just asking to get him hurt. But, as I said earlier, the Eagles run a pro system, obviously, and give Hurts a few plays/options here and there to keep the ball and run. But, the passing attack is pretty sophisticated, also, vs. only 5 or 6 plays like Leach's Air Raid (with reads and options off those). Watching SF last night, that system (which Coach Scan is supposedly coaching) works well with the right blocking, reads, etc. We are just not running it very well.

The quick strike offense is a double-edged sword. Your defense is always gonna be gassed by the end of the game. And, in a close game late (which Stoops has had a very good record the past 5+ years in one-score games), how do you milk the clock if you can't line up and get 3-4 yards running the ball? Say what you will, when the BBW was clicking, UK had a stellar record of being able to control the clock and secure a close victory.

1. I think the play caller aspect is way overrated
2. I totally ageee on executing is a ton better with Coen. But isn’t that the essence of a great coach. It’s more than drawing up plays on chalkboard. It’s making complex things simple, figuring out what your team can do well and away from things you struggle with

But the point is Stoops is still the same head cosch for Scangerello as he was Coen. All the blaming Stoops is partly right but mostly he’s at the Mercy of his offense staff. And I’d argue his current staff blows and he needs a new one

Longo's running game is also very good. Not just a typical air raid.

Brian Hartline will be a guy who is talked about for some serious OC jobs this offseason. Will be interesting to see if OSU promotes him and pays him. He’ll be on some HC lists in the not so distant future as well.

If Scang is gone, BH should be first call.

Hartline would be really hard to get away from Ohio St. Money isn’t a factor since he had a successful NFL career. I think he would leave for the right OC job, but I doubt that is being Stoops’ OC. Maybe if he could work with his brother as the QB coach but I still doubt it.

Auburn moved Mike from O analyst to QB coach when they fired their HC so he's building a resume.

Cadillac Williams has done a nice job as interim, done everything Auburn could expect. Brought the players together, engaged their fans. You can bet whoever gets that job will keep him in some capacity. Eddie Gran was his RB coach while at Auburn.

I'm still pushing Collin Klein, ex-Kansas St QB and current Kansas St OC/QB coach, for UK OC. Question I have is....will Stoops go the college route or go back to the NFL looking for his man?

He's their new FIckell. Future Head Coach.

Imo something to keep in perspective: Any oc or ol coach change would be be the 4th in 4 years. Imo any replacement needs to be heads and shoulders better than who we have and committed to no less than 2 years. We simply cannot have a new scheme every year or two.

With that said:

1) I don't see us changing ocs. Imo he's shown plenty enough given the ol limitations. We looked way better on the OL after we simplified some things and we looked way better overall given the simplifications and the reintroduction of will running the ball. I'd feel alot better if we keep it going the next two games.

The other thing to consider is the staff is banking on scang to bring in the next transfer QB based on his relationships.

2) I'm from a solid "fire yenser" to "let's see what happens the next two games". Since the simplifications, we look like an entirely different OL. Maybe that's what it took. Let's see what happens the next two games.

3) hiring someone like Hartline isn't the answer. Even if we somehow got him, Hartline is a college coaching star and we would be looking for another oc and yet another scheme in a year or two. We can't keep changing schemes.

4) we need to stay in the McVey/shanahan coaching tree. That let's us hire a new guy every few years as needed while also keeping continuity of scheme. That way we can recruit to the scheme and promise recruits that scheme will be in place.
