Positive Wilson update

Let UNC over spend to make a quick headline! Wilson is not worth anywhere near what he’s wanting, and I’ll say that about any incoming freshman!

Save the money and get a high profile portal dude that’s 3x better than Wilson, for 1/3rd of the price! MCBB is not a freshman’s game anymore with the transfer portal.

Newell looked pretty good against our transfers Tuesday.

Except that Hubert Davis is still their coach. So even if they get Wilson, they’ll still be the ones losing.

I’m not talking about just Wilson.

If we start conceding the top tier talent to the Dukes and UConn’s because of some nostalgia longing for how things “used to be” or we don’t want to pay then we will be IU in five-ten years.

Unless you believe a portal player may offer better value.

I am not trying to do the whole "well we didnt need him anyway" when we lose out on a recruit, but I saw him play a game about a month ago and came away very unimpressed.

I don't think I have ever seen a lazier, less engaged player in any competitive sport at any level in my entire life. 8 year old softball players have more enthusiasm. Now, in his defense it was a high school game and they were winning by 20 the whole time, and he clearly is athletic and can pass. But he spent 90% of the game on offense standing in the corner not moving, and would lightly jog back on defense, completely out of the play.

Hopefully Pope cleans that up and I caught him on a bad night effort wise, but that was my take away.

Well, truthfully we don’t need him anyway.

If the kid looks at how unc uses their bigs and likes that better then good riddance. To me there is no comparison and I've watched unc 3 or 4 times this year. Fortunately, if he goes to unc we still have a couple of hs options and undoubtedly some good portal options. I trust pope on this one.

I don’t care how much money is paid to any player from athletic dept. revenue or NIL. Why should any of us? But I do want UK to have the best team possible. So, if the budget for putting the team together is limited such that attracting an OAD freshman means an inability to keep good/promising returning players and bring in the best portal transfers, then I say let the OAD kid go – they’re not important enough to winning in college to justify that.

That said, I think UK is still in the top echelon of $$$ ability and can almost always get who they want from a financial standpoint. Just saying if it did come down to having to choose between an OAD freshman and multiple other good players, or even just the top portal player at the same position, usually (almost always) go with the returning players or top portal guy due to a generally bigger impact on winning games.

I believe that Jasper Johnson was a Alabama "lock" according to national anaylists

However, it turns out to be false as Jasper wanted to commit to us several times before he finally made decision.

Hopefully same thing happens for Wilson
True. My concern though if Wilson is trying to leverage for even more NIL, I’m hoping Pope draws a line at a point. There’s an honest argument to be made that portal players could be better than Wilson if he is a OAD. I trust Pope at the end of the day but I’m good with or without Wilson

If given the choice, I would prefer that Kentucky goes winless every year in football if it meant we dominated basketball again.

We're never going to do anything in football anyway. Never have, never will.

Give the NIL money to the basketball program. That's who we are.

Screw this "never a bride, always a bridesmaid" mentality that the football program has.

UConn had three freshman/ sophomore lottery picks on their national championship teams.

You need the mix of elite talent and veterans when you are at our level. Duke/Uconn/Kansas level. Something our last coach was portly suited to understanding.

I don’t think Pope intends to make the same error.

Wilson must be third or fourth option in our offense if he comes here.

But if he goes to UNC, he thinks he may be the first option, the "guy" on their roster.

This may be his thinking, he may not want to be role players for us and instead want to be the "star" and no.1 option in unc. He can show more for his nba draft stock, which may be more important for him than winning games in college basketball

So if he goes to UNC, it makes sense in basketball wise

Still want him here, think he can be Jonathan Isaac type player and a solid starter.

You know that.
