Portal update today

I'd consider Oweh more a SG than a SF since he's 6'4", but you can kinda play him anywhere. Outside of Noah we don't have anyone in that 6'6"-6'8" traditional SF range slated for the roster next year to replace Robinson and Brea. Assuming Oweh comes back, and with the guards already on the team, plus incoming, I'd say SG is probably the least likely spot they are trying hard to fill. Could certainly be wrong, but I'm betting a starting SF, Stretch PF and a stud PG are at the top of the list and then they'll plug pieces from there.

Are we in the running for 2 of Iowa’s starters?????

If these dudes are such great players, why aren’t they at least playing in the NCAA Tournament????
Hmmm.. let’ s play your game , how many players that will start for Kentucky tonight or will be on the bench and Mark Pope thought they were good enough to bring them in from transfer portal , have played last year in NCAA tournament?

Are you saying Amari , Carr and co should have not been selected from Portal?

Are you saying that Pope and staff should only select players that played in ncaa tournament?

People also have to understand the portal pool is going to be a bit smaller than the last couple of years because there are no more 5th/6th year guys to go around.

Also, due to the portal, top programs are taking fewer true freshmen, driving some good talent to these mid-majors for a year or two before they transfer up after proving themselves some. Mid-majors are becoming the minor leagues for good talent.
This is one of several reasons I think it's foolhardy to think we're going to have a better portal haul than we had last year. The limitations are all $ related. People seem to think Pope "proving" himself is going to help attract more players. I'm telling you guys, it's PRIMARILY about the almighty dollar right now for this school. The pool of players will be significantly smaller this year because no more COVID year players + big schools are going to be able to retain more of their rosters this cycle because revenue sharing is a factor. I know no one wants to hear this but they need to hear it.

Travis Graf reported that UK is expected to spend more than $10M this portal cycle. Don’t let facts get in the way of that air-tight agenda though 👍

This is very good point.

I would like to use all 15 scholarship.

We already know we need 3 starters( PG, SG, PF) if Oweh and Garrison returns. So that means we need to get from 7 players portal:

1 PG starter and 2nd PG ( if Kerr is out)
1 SG starter
1 Sf sub to Oweh
2 PF starter and Sub ( Freeman would work if he wants to be here 2 years and put the work )
1 center muscle and rebounder to complement Garrison and the Freshman .
I agree a guy like Agbim at PG would be a great get. But, we have a very good PG coming in as a backup in Lewis and Jasper would be the Third PG if Perry doesn’t improve defense.

I just have a suspicion that Garrison is going to look for a bag somewhere else. So, we need a starter and Malachi would be the back up at center.

PF is wide open. We need someone similar to Carr but better defense and rebounding, who could also play some backup C if Malachi takes some time to develop. We also need a backup who compliments those who will be playing with him, similar to the way Alminor fits with the original second string.

At SF, we need a 3 and D guy. That has been our Achilles heel for so many years. Oweh really isn’t tall enough. Freeman would be nice, but he is all 3 and no D. He has the tools, but you watch some full game highlights and it is Ole all night. It would help if that guy could guard smaller and taller players as well.

Just because Ohio St is #1 in revenue doesn't necessarily mean their basketball team will be paid top dollar.
The school decides the split or what % is allocated to basketball.
Common sense tells you most of their big money boosters are football centric.
Kids will play at UK, Duke, Kansas, UNC, UCONN for less than at a football school.
Maybe not a lot less but less.

That’s why I don’t get them going after eaglestaff. He is alright, but there are much better fits and players to enter
Maybe it's just a matter of "showing interest" to a set of players at each position that fit the system but not making full on offers and taking commitments until the full portal picture opens up. Kind of that need to start and maintain a relationship quickly with the B+ guys who are fine options, but waiting for the A+ guys jump in the portal and see if they are willing to come here. Then if A+ guys aren't, you have solid backup options. It would suck to throw all your chips on an A+ guy and pass over all the B+ guys who end up committing elsewhere just to last minute lose the A+ guy to a bigger NIL bag offer and now you are thumbing through D+ portal guys because they are the only ones left.

You seem confused. Are you just referring to revenue sharing? Because that's the only thing the school has control over. The rest is up to boosters. If a booster cares more about basketball or football, they will give more of their $ to that sport. Revenue sharing is only one part of it. I really don't see how this is a cogent response to what I posted. I'm not wrong. I mean debate something I actually said if you disagree. I'd be happy to debate that.

I agree that Oweh is undersized for sf so yes a taller Sf would be nice.

I think the lack of NIL dollars is somewhat of a myth. Sure there are programs with bigger and more wealthy bases than we have (not exactly sure why) but I think hiring Pope revigorated that. It's looking more and more like Cal had alienated some folks, especially with the teams results the last few years. I think more have stepped up and they're finding ways. Supposedly football NIL dollars are on the uptick as well. Now the question is how do you distribute those dollars. Do you blow 2-4 mil on a superstar or two and have to go cheap to fill out the rest of the roster or do you go after 5-6 really good players who will take a little less but will produce an overall better and deeper team at all positions? I think the latter is the route Pope likes to go.

I agree with Pope that depth is more important than having a few very talented players. People often miss the idea that the perpetual motion in Pope’s offense leads to stamina burning extremely fast. I bet we would have done more ball pressuring if we had more depth. We don’t have the ability to do a lot of things that would require more exertion until we get true quality depth.

Revenue sharing and NIL combine to make a total compensation package.
UK is right there with the other basketball schools for NIL and I'm not worried about the football schools.
We can revisit this topic in June when the dust settles.
I'm confident our portal class will rank near the top.

Much as I love Agbim, Smith is the top of my wish list!!!
Is that because of size, shooting, dribble or passing skills?

This is very important when you want to use pace to be the better team in the last 4 minutes of a game, ala, Duke and Gonzaga.

How do you KNOW Coach Pope even wants these 2 players??? Where did I say I had a problem with. Coach Pope????? I didn’t.

And it was just as much a question about the Iowa coach who was fired.

Wish we used Pitino's trapping and pressure defense. Love our offense. But I hate being on our heels on defense. There is enough rides now to have plenty of offensive and defensive specialists. Have all you can that can do both great and the rest divide up where some are greater on offense and some are greater on defense.

I prefer Smith over Agbim because of one reason and one reason only —- demonstrated performance against the highest level of competition . From a pure talent standpoint, Agbim has the edge in my opinion. The problem is we have a very small sample size of him doing what he does against top competition and he hasn’t been to a national title game like Smith. We know how Smith can handle the atmosphere of being on a March run, whereas that is not in the realm of knowable with Agbim. I love both of their games though.

add them both & use them as pg & shooting guard, slide Oweh & Johnson to small forward for a small ball line up

Yes and add a Center who can play against guys in our league.

The reason I would like to see Braden Smith on the roster is because he is a proven winner. He has won NCAA tourney games. Yes, he had Edey to lean on most of his career, but still he is a winner.

And he was huge for Purdue yesterday.

You want guys with tourney experience.

Look at Baylor, they are not that good, but Omier and Roach are winners. That experience paid off today. Especially with Omier.

And I hope the same thing happens with us. Butler has NCAA tourney wins under his belt. So does Brea and Almonor. I’m hoping that pays off tonight.

Next year, having another PG that has played in a Final Four, could be huge for us.
