Portal update today

Owen Freeman , 6’10 that can run, good finisher around the rim with both hands, passing is decent. He will be a nice replacement for Carr at 4 and fit in Pope”s system.

He'd be an awful fit for Kentucky's system. He's not a bad player at all but he doesn't handle the ball, shoot from 3pt range or pass well. Needs to get into shape too. Was horribly out of shape before the season started and he/his father quit on the team after the Ohio State game in Columbus this year. There are ways to go about "business". That wasn't it.

I watched Mason Falslev put up 17 and 10, with 3 assists and 2 steals against UCLA last night. He is exactly what Kentucky needs. Extremely tough, physical guard, who can shoot, pass, and play defense. And he can rebound too if you’re into that kind of thing. Not his best game last night, but if you were watching you saw his insane activity level on both sides of the ball.
Is he in the portal?

No. His season just ended last night. He entered last offseason before returning to Utah State. He was expected to follow his former coach to Washington. Now his current coach is a candidate at WVU and Falslev has really blown up. I expect him to enter.

I was at the game as well, he does a lot. He needs to get better at making reads and shooting

I like all your posts, and yes his sophomore year didn’t go as good for Freeman . he got his finger injured and entered the transfer portal… However, I think is more to the story with Iowa. When all your best players are leaving , and they are good players, i thinks talks more about the culture at Iowa than the players being fat , lazy, or out of shape or disinterested. It’s the coaching job to have players and shape and motivated.

As far as handling the ball, not many teams ask of their center or power forward to be the ball handler. This year Amari having to handle the ball was because of necessity. I don’t think Amari , Carr or Garrison handle the ball as much at the previous teams.

Yes, in Pope system you need to be able to pass as a big, which Freeman can. He is outside shooting is on par with Garrison and Carr and better than Amari. He is faster than Carr even when out of shape.

I trust Pope in an interview can read the room pretty well and catch where the players head and priorities are. I also like that Freeman has 2 more years of eligibility left.

We need to get away from one and done system, if it is from Hs or portal so we can build a program.

All the players are leaving because Iowa fired their coach a week ago. From what I know he was always well liked by his players. He also seemed to really have a screw loose.

That finger injury was total BS. It didn't end his season-he chose to end it about the time it came out that he was going to shut it down and enter the Portal. Price of business these days in the sport.

He's not on par with Carr at all in terms of playing facing the basket. That's totally untrue. He's a good low post player-rim runs well due to how Iowa played a transition game due to the fact they had to-not a very athletic team, struggle to defend-so they tried to outscore everyone. Freeman was better as a Freshman--in better shape and it also helped he didn't see many good opposing Bigs in the Big Ten last year.

The "best players" at Iowa weren't good enough to make the NCAA Tournament two years in a row. The new Coach should celebrate that they are all going into the Portal. McCaffery/Staff were lazy and recruited a lot of friends of their kids or friends of a big NIL booster that sits courtside and is one of the biggest jackasses that is seen during a CBB season. Last name is Gasser and he's always visible during a game. He actually had some say and they wanted to keep it "local". Josh Dix is good-but at not point in the Portal should he be the #1 player available. He and Freeman are the only two guys I'd want from that program but I'd explore other options first. Dix needs to go where he can be a 3rd/4th option on a scouting report-when opponents locked him down-Iowa sucked even worse then usual. Freeman is going to be a good get for someone-just expect it to be another school than Kentucky.

Every program is dealing with 1 and done now. It's how things operate. Have to recruit your own guys to stay and that's the most successful programs as well as those who aren't. What you need to do is recruit to fit and playing style and go from there. But I'm not investing in a guy who quit on his team-that's total BS and it happens more often than not. Freeman could've played--chose not to because he knew he was gone and wanted the surgery done to prep for his next stop. That's trash.

Are we in the running for 2 of Iowa’s starters?????

If these dudes are such great players, why aren’t they at least playing in the NCAA Tournament????

Iowa does not have any AA players, especially not PG. I think you may be thinking of the Purdue PG.

All the players are fleeing Iowa because their coach got fired.

I thought he was out of shape too when I was watching some video
he seems more like a traditional center, rather than one that would help UK playing Pope's style
at this point, really haven't seen a center that fits UK

People also have to understand the portal pool is going to be a bit smaller than the last couple of years because there are no more 5th/6th year guys to go around.

Also, due to the portal, top programs are taking fewer true freshmen, driving some good talent to these mid-majors for a year or two before they transfer up after proving themselves some. Mid-majors are becoming the minor leagues for good talent.

Same reason we lost to Oakland in the first round last year. Their coach got fired for a reason.

If we are chasing Freeman from LMU, I think that means Ament is unlikely. I see them playing the same position. Though, Ament could play some at PF. He is just too small to play PF for long stretches at there. Not that I am saying Freeman will start, I just think it is less likely we could get him here if Ament were to commit.
I just have gut feeling if pope really wants Freeman, he will be ours...

Ament is Duke or at worse UL.

This is very good point.

I would like to use all 15 scholarship.

We already know we need 3 starters( PG, SG, PF) if Oweh and Garrison returns. So that means we need to get from 7 players portal:

1 PG starter and 2nd PG ( if Kerr is out)
1 SG starter
1 Sf sub to Oweh
2 PF starter and Sub ( Freeman would work if he wants to be here 2 years and put the work )
1 center muscle and rebounder to complement Garrison and the Freshman .
