Saw this last week and thought it was pretty interesting.

Porsche just filed a patent for a 6-stroke engine design. With the car industry’s shift towards EVs, I was surprised to see there is continued development on internal combustion engines. And, as someone who enjoys the sound of a combustion engine, I found this to be pretty intriguing.

It’s not yet clear whether Porsche will continue development and actually put this into production, but it seems there’s some hope that Porsche won’t entirely abandon combustion engines in their future cars.

I suspect the decision to move forward with producing a new combustion engine will come down to whether or not Porsche can scale their e-Fuel production and bring down the cost per gallon.

For those that aren’t familiar, Porsche’s e-fuel plant is another really interesting project where Porsche has made significant investments. Essentially, Porsche has built a plant in Chile that extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to make synthetic gasoline. The plant is powered by wind, so it’s a 100% carbon neutral way of making and burning gasoline.

The big challenge at the moment is that the price per gallon for their e-fuel is very high. However, Porsche’s racing teams are currently using e-fuel produced at their plant and Porsche is focusing on scaling the process to reduce cost.

Hopefully they’ll get the price down to a point that makes it possible to save the combustion engine for those of us who are car enthusiasts. I’m also extremely curious to know what a 6-stroke engine sounds like.
