Pope Will Not Tighten Lineup

So, we used to bitch about Cal playing his starters 36 mpg, having no depth, riding the starters so hard they get hurt and we only have seven healthy guys available any given night by Valentine's Day.

Now, we are mad Pope uses a longer bench to play 8-10 guys in an effort to keep starters fresh.

Alright then.

I’m not sure I’d word it the same way he did but he has to find a way to get production from the bench guys.

Given the struggles of our defense we’ll have to consistently put up big points totals to advance in the tourneys. It’s hard to consistently put up 80+ without real bench production.

…only thing is our bench stinks. So it’s a problem!

So the women’s team basically plays only 6 but the guys can’t? Interesting.
I think the fanbase is just bipolar and likes to bitch.

Lack of depth/short bench was one of the biggest complaints about Cal since at least 2011 (2015 excluded). Now, we're playing 8-10 guys and we need to play 6. Which one is it?

I’m not saying he needs to play guys 38 minutes. But if Amari can’t play more than 22 minutes, he has issues. Sometimes people can do more than they even think they can. But this should have been figured out before now, it’s called conditioning. If your early 20’s and can’t play 27 minutes / seems like it’s because you haven’t prepared yourself properly. That’s just my opinion.

I really couldn't care less about comparing women's basketball to men's. I'll trust Coach Pope over random message board takes (including mine of course).

I believe their point was, why does Brooks do it but Pope doesn't? I get different philosophies, but this one is hurting our production at the moment. If it's about minutes, say so. If it's about development, say it. There's 4 guaranteed games left. I would try to win them all at this point. But, hey, that's just me.

This has really been my only major gripe with Pope.

Context is important. Depth is good, but, our bench is not great. He should've played those guys more in the beatdown games in November and December. It's March. Play your best dudes.

Need 8-10, but see my post above. It’s not an either or thing. Big difference in playing Amari 22 minutes to 28 minutes.

Well OK , I lol forward to other teams treating Chandler like an 8th grader . Pre set minutes that so rigid they interfere with winning really pisses me off . Matchups matter , maybe we need a few to play 34 minutes in order to get from the S16 to EE .. play them !!! Ugh I hate this mind set a guy can only go so far .. what if we get a 4 minute ref review about time to set a key player .. player is fresh , still gonna set them ? Foolishness .

Just curious, which players and teams were those? I know coach Pitino had enough depth to substitute when he could. I know Calipari usually settled on 7 players. Just curious.

Buddy, you want to know go do your own homework. I'm not digging through nearly 70 years of games. I am almost positive that Cal at a LEAST one dude play 39 minutes here once.

The point is these are sesaoned vets. There should be NO issue playing 31 minutes when needed.

Well my friend the statement 'I am almost positive' kinda proves your just throwing ideas out as fact that you really don't know, doesn't it?
And 'Cal had at least one player' is a far distance from every team, isn't it?

Heck I think Kemba Walker played 40 mins for like 10-12 games straight from the Big East tournament all the way til the final game of the NCAA tournament lol.

No. The biggest issue with Cal was who he chose to play the most mins. Had nothing to do with lack of depth. He wouldn’t start the guys that needed to start.

You want to prove me wrong? Have at it smart aleck. I don't have time to go though 70 years of games for empirical evidence. This isn't a court of law, this isn't a scientific dissertation for a doctorate, it's a message board.

Geez Louise.

So funny how so many complained about Cal's lack of rotation yet here we are bashing Pope's.
It’s an easy point for fans to see and therefore be a switch to flip for immediate improvement.

Brea’s minutes will fix itself when we can get a full game from Lamont and Oweh. He’s played into the mid 30’s or higher in each of the last two games because one of the other starting guards got into foul trouble.

Can we just at least play the starters for a longer stretch to start the game to ensure we get off to our best start? I'm tired of the swapping out before we even get to under 16.

Pope is as stubborn and idiotic about lineups as Cal was.
nah. pope is actually inconsistent in playing some guys and not others then changing. like where has almanor been? that’s an example.

cal is consistently horrible. he will play the 5 star no matter how good the other guy has been playing. will even watch a sub save a game, brag about him on social media afterwards, then never play him again.
