Pope prepared to reinvent strategy with injuries

so you are saying if they adopt NBA rules he is GTG

I know but he’s rather quick. Oweh’s handles are suspect as well. I’m open to suggestions, but with all these shooters, we need someone who can get to the rim consistently. Butler was that guy.
That’s why Pope had Williams backing his man from tbe 3 point line a couple games ago. He was trying to have him penetrate to collapse tbe defense and get shooters open.

Whether it worked or not I won’t say. Pope just doesn’t have any better option.

Reading between the lines I suspect Jax might have a hamate fracture. Current thinking is remove hamate bone at some point so now decision is when and is sooner better .

On the other hand can he hurt it any worse by playing through the pain?

Butler has a torn labrum which is the muscle holding the shoulder joint in its socket. Very painful and will require surgery eventually. But if he can play through the pain and the inflammation settles a bit then we can expect to see him back?

Again both will require surgery but can it wait until April? Can they make their injuries worse? Can they play through the pain? Guess we will see.

It's sad because UK would likely beat Texas by 6+ points, even on the road, if they had a healthy roster.

UK can still get the win, but with a healthy team, they would have taken down Texas, Vandy, LSU, and Oklahoma over the next two weeks. Maybe even Auburn at Rupp.

The guys on sleepers media said Kaluma and one other guy are supposed to be out for Texas, so they have key injuries too.

They had Oweh bring the ball up the court late in the Tennesee game and immediately give it to Williams to run his action at the top of the key. I didn't hate it and it might be what we see on Saturday
Yeah I noticed that as well. He might give TP a few shots at running the offense early on but if he doesn't show he can handle it, I think Oweh and our bigs are going to be our point guard solution unfortunately.

As great of a passer as Williams is, I think when he gets in the paint he sometimes tries to take it upon himself to get the basket, when he typically has at least two guys down there on him. Which in turn means somebody is usually open on the perimeter.

All I know is we have 4 healthy guys shooting 40% or better from 3. Spread the floor, find someone who can penetrate (Chandler?) and kick.
I'm just gonna pretend you didn't say the part about Chandler. He can certainly kick it, it's just the dribbling part that gives him some issues.

I trust in Pope’s tweaks because he actually tells us and shows us what they are.
Cal’s tweaks were a wait and see game that we didn’t know what we were actually looking for.

Need to brace Butler up with a heavy duty brace made for shoulder separations and get to the off season. He’ll lose some overhead mobility w the left arm but it isn’t his shooting arm and he’ll be able to relatively safely do everything from arms parallel to the floor down to his sides w the left arm

Hamate fractures are very rare and even moreso for a basketball player so not sure why you would jump to that and the labrum is cartilage not muscle. What kind of doc are you?

Good point. When a double team comes, lots of times the guy whose defender left him stays in the same spot. This allows the defender to recover much easier. It's important that the offensive player move via a cut or slightly to the side if staying beyond the three-point line. This takes a split second longer for the defender to relocate his man and get back on him. That extra split second is all our shooters need.

I agree with you, but I would say that Chandler can handle the ball decent. His biggest trouble is when he tries to split defenders or dribble in traffic. My hope is, that this is some of the rust from not playing for two years and getting accustomed to playing D1 basketball verses high school ball two years ago. In some ways the adjustments that he has to make to become comfortable at this level are greater than a normal freshman.

I am trying to stay positive concerning him as I think he has a lot of potential. He sees the court as good or better than anyone and I am very confident that his shooting is better than the dismal numbers that he has put up from three. I believe his issues are mental and/or lack of being comfortable on the court. It may or may not happen, but I hope it is a situation where the " light bulb comes on" for him. (hopefully soon, but may not happen this year)

Plus he's pretty athletic and can jump out of the gym. He could be a Sheppard/Brassow type down the road.

Pope has his work cut out for him, but I always enjoy reading his analysis and thought processes. I can't say that I ever felt that way about Cow.

I think Chandler is good enough defensively to put on the floor in about 3 minute spurts to dog one of the guards. Anything he gets on the offensive end would be a bonus. Kid plays great defense and will improve everywhere from this point.

Serious question: Have you ever used one of those? I'm not asking with regard to Butler. I have shoulder problems, impingement, and I'd like to get back to my rec league sports, but I've not heard great things about shoulder braces.

It's an obvious weakness. Fortunately, it's probably the easiest area of basketball to rapidly improve with practice.

I'll give him some grace bc he was away from the game completing mission work. However, if he doesn't make significant strides this off season I doubt he'll meet his potential.

He doesn't currently handle the ball decently. Agree on the rust. I've said that all season. Those that thought he would contribute just don't get how extremely tough this is. I think he'll eventually be fine. Assuming he stays, I could see him having a role next season. I don't think it'll be a big one, but he'll have a purpose on the court. Pope is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with him right now. Part of me gets it. Trying to build some confidence. Throwing him a bone at the same time. Idk, I've coach HS basketball for 20 years. Guys don't get better in games. 75-80% of their time playing is spent in practice and workouts. I expect a complete offseason/preseason will do wonders for his game.

Seems to have lost all confidence in his shot. Like he’s aiming instead of just letting it fly. Does some other nice things though.

Just like everyone else, we need to let Colin Chandler grow into himself here. The game is moving fast for him, but last time he was in the game, he made some nice plays and I watched him get in front of drivers on defense, using his chest, like Lamont does.
I bet he ends up being a key player for Pope next year and heck, he might end up helping us win some games down the home stretch this year.
