Pope on KSR

Good try.

Pitino's system was predicated on exactly the same paradigm as modern college basketball; and yet even with Turner's weaknesses exhibited in a system based on perimeter shooting, the kid still started on a runner-up team.

By the way, Tristan Newton - a guard and lead playmaker - shot a woeful 32% from three last season.

Based on your logic, how in the world did he ever manage to lead UConn to a second national championship?
have no idea but I'm curious. I would say I some situations it could. I'm not sure if the coach can give an opinion

Yeah it's not like the game has changed or anything since the Wayne Turner days...

Starting PG 3PT% by champions, over career (starting championship game):

2024: Tristen Newton (UCONN)
32.7%

2023: Tristen Newton (UCONN)
32.7%

2022: Dajuan Harris Jr. (Kansas)
39% (on only 223 shot attempts. For comparison, Lamont Butler has shot 324 in his career. I don't know much about Harris Jr., but his shot selection beyond the arc seems to have been really good.)

2021: Jared Butler (Baylor)
38.4% - This guy lit it up. This was his 3PT% on 558 attempts, in only 3 years.

2019: Kihei Clark (Virginia)
34.9%

2018: Jalen Brunson (Villanova)
39.3%

2017: Joel Berry II (UNC)
36.6%

2016: Jalen Brunson / Ryan Arcidiacono (Villanova) - Both of these guys played at the same time, sharing PG duties
Brunson 39.3%
Arcidiacono 35.8%

2015: Tyus Jones (🤮)
37.9%

2014: Shabazz Napier / Ryan Boatright (UCONN)
Napier: 37.5%
Boatright: 38.0%

2013: Peyton Siva / Russ Smith (Louisville)
Siva: 29.1%
Smith: 34.5%

2012: Marquis Teague (Your Kentucky Wildcats)
32.5%

2011: Kemba Walker / Shabazz Napier (UCONN)
Walker: 32.6%
Napier: 37.5%

2010: Nolan Smith / Jon Scheyer (🤮)
Smith: 39.2%
Scheyer: 38.3%

2009: Wayne Ellington / Ty Lawson
Ellington: 39.7%
Lawson: 40.3% - NOTE: Lawson shot 47.2% on 108 attempts during the championship season.

AVERAGE: 36.5%

Lamont Butler's career average is 32.1%. Only one season out of the last 15 has seen a team with the championship with a PG averaging less than 32.1%, and that was Louisville in 2012 (Between Siva and Smith, they averaged 31.8%). Those stats could make the UK fan pessimistic about our chances at a championship.

However, Butler averaged 34.2% his junior season, on the most attempts he has taken in his career, 117. That percentage would be good enough for a winning PG 3PT% in four the of last fifteen seasons, including the last two seasons. It sounds like we're going to be lighting up the three-point line, so maybe that will bode well for Butler's 3PT%. That stat should give UK fans reason to be optimistic about our chances at a championship season.

So what caused him to go so far down? I mean it is a legit concern as the point guard is the guy who will have the ball at the end.

He fractured his wrist and that’s the reason his percentage was down. Just watch the game of basketball more often and you guys would know this stuff.

Well Pope said hes not worried about playing defense on opposing PG's. That means Butler and probably Kriisa are playing really good defense this summer. Id say some of Butler's defense prowess is rubbing off on Kriisa and some of Kriisa's offensive prowess is rubbing off on Butler. Im gonna say like i said way back when Butler will play when we need to stop a opposing PG from lighting us up and Krissa will play when we need extra shooting and scoring at PG. Both will play a ton at the same time in the backcourt also. I still say Butler ends up shooting around 33% from 3 this season, 1 of 3.

Oweh is going to be a bulldog and hard to keep out of the paint when slashing this season.

Carr is going to be a killer mismatch for other teams at 6-11 230 and can shoot lights out from deep.

If Williams and Garrison are 2 of our top 3 assists guys that just means they are unselfish and willing to kick out to open 3 point shooters and thats exactly how Pope wants it and were going to be a very dangerous team all season.

Oh please. It's a sports board so tell me what deadly agenda I have. People are so weird.
You defended Cal and are negative about everything now so its only 1 of 2 things

1. You are upset we got Cal to want to leave and blame UK and us fans so you want some kind of justice in your eyes or

2. you've always been a troll from the beginning. A rival fan seeing the decline of Cal would obviously want us to stick with him and would obviously want to sour on anything positive now with a new coach . All the other fans that are cautious about Pope and or have doubts, they all show that want him to succeed and actually give it a chance that he does. If you've posted anything positive about UK since Pope became our coach, I've missed it.

Newton and Castle started in the backcourt 2024.

You're right. When I clicked on the title game to see who the starters were, I didn't notice I was looking at Purdue's starters and not UCONN's. Surprisingly, you're the only person who caught that, or mentioned it anyway.
