Pope needs to send players to nba to sell the program

Many players look at his resume, and find that he has coached no nba players. This may hinder our recruiting (both hs and portal).

We need one of Kobe Brea, Amari Williams, Andrew Carr, Jaxson Robinson to be drafted hopefully
Why, not every player is going to make it to the NBA, and right now good college players can make some good money right now.

I keep hearing kids saying that they enjoyed visits at other places, how their coaches promised development, getting them to the NBA, and how they want to play for said coach. What is Pope's sell? Wearing the UK name on the front of the jersey pitch isn't going to get 99% of these recruits.

I think players and their handlers are smart enough to realize that this is the first place Pope has coached at that is expected to produce NBA players. Also, the players are more worried about NIL and winning to worry about how many of his former players went to the NBA. It isn't that going to the NBA isn't important. Players realize today that they are most often on GMs' radar before they ever get to college. Minus a couple of players, Cal had very little to do with his players going to the NBA. For the most part, the NBA didn't hold under performance against Kentucky players because they realized they weren't getting good coaching. Heck, Reed made it to the NBA with all that Cal did to hide him.

ANOTHER SKY IS FALLING MALCONTENT!!

UK doesn't make final fours or win national titles without high level talent. All anyone has to do is look at any title team or final four team the past 50 years.

Once we have that on the roster the odds of making the final four and winning it all will go up. Not rocket science.
You mean like this coming years roster ?

Do you realize that Auburn has 2 top 100 HS kids on their roster ? And Florida has …. 0.
How are those teams doing?

Some fans haven't figured out the importance of coaching. Pope took UK further in his first season than Cal in his final six seasons with far less talent. He achieved that feat by good coaching which is something that hasn't been seen around Kentucky for years before Pope arrived.

How many players in the world does that pitch legitimately apply to?

60 picks a year. Many, if not most nowadays, will be guys overseas who stay overseas as opposed to playing a year in college. Also, a lot of the OADs or even 2 year guys are very raw projects who don't really mature and flourish until they're a few seasons or more into their pro career.

So yeah, even if we get those guys, we're not getting them at their most productive and a lot of them get tore up by run of the mill 3–4-year college players.

I don't disagree with the idea of striving to pitch the best and extending the invitation, however, when you make such a niche group the biggest part of your business model, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Yeah, Cal got some great talent, and it did pay off when he was lucky enough to get the multi-generational exceptional unicorns. But overall, the thesis of OADs/NBA talent being able to sustain a program and win consistently at the expected level didn't pan out.

OADs and even NBA talent that hangs around another year doesn't net any more than building a team/program over the course of 3-4 years with good-great college players who will never sniff a combine.

Wow, that’s almost like exactly what I said yesterday. Thank you for stealing my post and passing it off as if it’s your own.

That is what you need to help you deal with your 5-star syndrome disorder.

Yes, we need to recruit obvious nba talent to make success either from portal or hs

Every champion level team has multiple nba level players

As I watch the final 4, I am seeing evidence that not all NBA quality players were considered as such when they first went to college.
I do not disagree with you, likes of broome, clayton were discovered in college career.

But having good record of sending nba players is always helpful in recruiting (in both portal and HS) and winning

You’re right. I’m sure Pope is saying that they will be able to sell used cars after spending four years in Lex. I’m sure that’s exactly what he’s selling them.

Some of you folks need a combination of a therapist and a giant blunt.

Those players weren't discovered; they were developed. Many of Kentucky fans have forgotten about the role coaches should play in developing players. We are too used to getting 5-star players who would have made it to the NBA if they had never stepped foot on UK's campus.

According to the most recent mock draft on NBA.com, here are the projected draft picks for Houston, Auburn and Florida combined:

#29 Clayton, Florida
#32 Broome, Auburn
#34 Haugh, Florida
#35 Uzan, Houston
#47 Condon, Florida

Auburn and Houston are contenders with just 1 second round player. None of those kids were considered anything close to NBA level players when they committed to those teams also.

How do you tell if a coach is great, do you base it on how many players he sends to the NBA or how many championships he’s won? Dean Smith won two and Calipari won one, but both have sent numerous players to the NBA. The brand helped both of those coaches in that respect, both had more talent than most and won the least amount consider the talent they had. Now with NIL the brand carries less weight. All college players say they want to play for a coach that will get them there, that talk may be a little overrated. If you are good enough, you will make it.

I look at the role the coach played in developing players. Cal played very little role in developing players. Most of the players coached by Cal who went to the NBA would have gone no matter where they played.

I agree, that’s mostly my point, if you are good enough it will happen without the having a coach that can get me there talk. That’s just a reason they give for going there, because both parties are happy with the decision, in some cases I’m sure it’s true.

That's not in Pope's job description. His job is to recruit the best players that will help him win games for the University of Kentucky. If these players do their part, they will improve their chances of being drafted. UK has the brightest lights on the largest stage in college basketball. Pope just needs to win games, and rest will take care of itself. A narcissist used to coach here and tried doing that mess and nearly destroyed the program.

Remains to be seen if he can get guys with legit NBA potential. He needs to prove he can consistently get at least a few of those guys every year to win at the level we expect.

In order to send players to NBA, Pope needs to recruit higher talent.

Until then, Kentucky already has many players in NBA. Pope needs to unify BBN and reach out to them so they can help to sell the program and also financially.

It shocks me that Clayton is that low.
