Pope gets contract extension

I despise these automatic extensions for something that should be relatively common at UK. This is how you get into things like buyouts you can't afford.
I don’t mind it honestly for one year. Maybe make it Elite 8 but other than that I’m cool. It rewards deep runs every year.

One year is one thing. It’s built into his 5 year contract that if he reaches the Sweet 16 any year, it’s an automatic 1 year extension.
Yeah I think it should be just after a deep run. Maybe after the first one and thereafter an Elite 8, then a final 4, then a ship. The buyout is the most importantly thing, if it’s low then it’s easy to get out of.

I know as fans it's easy to focus only on our school/AD/coach.....but I've read things recently saying that the era of coaches having all the leverage in contractual negotiations with athletic directors is coming to an end. Which implies, of course, that for some time, apparently coaches have had the leverage. Which tells me this isn't just a matter of Barnhart getting out-negotiated, or of him for unfathomable reasons giving sweetheart deals to his coaches, but rather it represents the market to a degree. It's been a seller's market. And just like a seller's market when I'm trying to buy your house that you have listed for $300,000, I can offer you $280,000 and think and say that's a fair offer, but if others are offering 300 or 315, it doesn't really matter what I think or say.....

If you start with a five year contact then an extension of one year after a year leaves a five year contact. It may not mean as much with portal, etc. but it wasn’t that long ago this was done to make a signee with coach stability.

It easily gets you an extension when you consider the recent lack of success from the person he replaced. Maybe just maybe you guys are really not UK fans. Most likely you are simply Cal fans who just can't get past the fact that the blowhard is no longer here.
Im pretty sure Lmdcat is a troll. I dont like when people call people trolls for voicing a different opinion... but I'm pretty sure he is actually a troll. A very good one.

Like this post makes no sense. Most here are complaing about mitch making another bad contract extension. We are all aware we were stuck with Cal longer than we should have been and we were really close to being stuck with him more had he not breached by contacting Arkansas behind UKs back.

So why does this dude lmdcat try to make a point we are cal fans for not liking another bad contract extension that almost had us stuck with a coach that under-perfromed.

Sweet 16s are common at Kentucky. Adding a year and buyout money for a sweet 16 is ridiculous. I hope Pope does great but if he just keeps making sweet 16s and it extends him to oblivion and adds buyout money, then we are in another Calipari stuck with you moment. Or if not stuck, you can pay the buyout but it means lack of NIL momey or something like that.

Anyway, hopefully this whole thread is pointless and we are in many final fours and titles 10 years from now, but you have to prepare for all possibilities

Yawn with the constant you’re a Cal fan if you don’t think all things Pope are rosy all day long …grow up

A sweet 16 extension auto renewal….this is so Mitch level of keeping mediocre performance into a one sided deal for coaches

Should be but not relatively common for Kentucky. However, the person who is responsible for doing what hasn't been done for 6 years is being rewarded for his unexpected success. Last week posters were going after him because he wasn't signing portal players fast enough. This week it is because his employer is rewarding him for work well done. At some point, some of you will run out of excuses for doubting, questioning, or criticizing Pope. One can only hope!!
Vast majority of fans are optimistic about pope and he certainly showed promise this season. Not believing there should be auto extensions or raises for acceptable but hardly remarkable standards at the school is reasonable. Put a bonus in there, that's fine, but these length of contract issues is a problem for barnhart. If one thing we can guess at this point is that barnhart didn't take anything pertinent in his ba from ottawa and maybe slept through the contracts portion of his sports admin education at ohio u 40 years go.

This "dude" is simply tired of the same whinners not being able to get over the fact that your boy Cal is no longer here. Even you should realize there is a huge difference between a one-year extension and a lifetime contract. You just can't wait to find some reason to complain about something surrounding Pope. Just maybe his one year extension occurred because it was in his contract if the team made it to the sweet sixteen, which hadn't been done in 6 years.

Unrelated, but I was going through Instagram and found a basketball post about a big man trying to make it overseas. I'm not sure why, but I decided to go to his page and scroll through his page. Glad I did, because I found this post.

What a guy.
Good story, thanks for sharing!

While one year extension is not bad, I agree totally with you.

again, very nice troll job. Your trying to make this about Pope.

That said, you are outnumbered in this thread. It looks like the majority do not agree with extensions for sweet 16s and that is the discussion. The bad contracts mitch gives. And Cal is far from "my boy" ... I wanted him gone after losing to St Peters when we had the national player of the year Oscar... that was enough for me following a 9-16 season. Cal would have been gone then if it wasn't for the bad contract Mitch gave him. That's why the majority here are critical of bad contracts so we don't end up in similar situation. Do you understand now? of course you do, but you are just doing a hell of a job trolling.

It was in the original contract to get the extension for sweet 16 and never should have been. Adds money and extension.... and I believe it adds to a buyout as well.

I'm down with extensions and rewards for final fours.

I don't personally know the details of Pope's contract, but I thought that the bonus for the sweet 16 and the one year extension was for his first year? If that is the case, I have no problem with it at all; it gave him some incentive to get Kentucky going in his first year, when he started late, had to hire a coach staff and and to start recruiting late in the process. What he accomplished this year was great, but I don't think he should get an extension every time Kentucky hits the sweet 16. I agree that that should be an expectation for every year and shouldn't always give him a contract extension.

It’s built into his contract for the entirety of it, or all 5 years.

“At the conclusion of each men’s basketball season in which the University’s men’s basketball team participates in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, the term of this agreement shall be extended automatically by one contract year”

Mitch probably took Cal’s contract template and just updated the name, dates and amounts… since Cal contract was so well written…🤯
Hey… look on the bright side. It wasn’t on a napkin at malones

I see you are extremely excited about your expanded vocabulary. Now that you can remember the word, work on learning how to use it and also how not to overuse it. Here are some additional words you can try: provoker, instigator, agitator, troublemaker, pot-stirrer, flamebaiter, button-pusher, etc. You obviously must not know about me if you think the nature of my posts has anything to do with what you or the majority think. You have to be an independent thinker to understand. Since you are focused on being in-numbered (if such a word exists) vs outnumbered, you are incapable of understanding.

No they won't, the agenda of these people is to criticise every thing the man does, because THEY in there infinite wisdom didn't want him here. Thier egos are so fragile they NEED to be able to say , "I told you so"
