He made a sweet 16 and got a year extension so if he just keeps making sweet 16s and never a final four we just keep extending? Sweet sixteen is the standard? I hate that I'm having to be devils advocate and people don't see how this is dumb.
My understanding is this extension only applied to his first season and change over term of contract. If you don't think he deserves one for this season I don't know what to say to you
I'm pro-auto extensions. What concerns me is this: What if the coach is just besties with the Sweet Sixteen? Is that an extension every year? Should maybe consider an extension if the next year improves upon the previous year's tournament placement. No extension if it matches or is worse or, God forbid, we miss the tournament.
It’s for the length of his contract, so all 5 years. I don’t think anyone is saying he doesn’t deserve a contractual benefit for this year. Some of us just think setting a low bar, in terms of UK basketball, for an automatic extension, is not a good idea. I’m not saying he will, but he could go Sweet 16, Round of 32, Sweet 16, Sweet 16 and get 3 years added to his contract over those 4 years. It’s just not smart to put that in contracts. Just like it wasn’t smart to put the 7 win season triggering an extension for Stoops (since bern removed).
So easy to spot a trolll... BUT if you are not a troll then please quit being a fan... IF this is your honest take after seeing how he has managed this team and can coach circles around other coaches, then I don't know what to tell you... yes I do find another team... I think Uof Smell is looking for fans.
Yes a troll, that's all some people do on this board is call somebody a troll or another teams fan in disguise if they post an opinion they don't like.
The truth of the matter is, I am a huge fan that thinks about our future and not taking risk. Risk like giving a coach extensions when he has one sweet 16 in his entire career. I also was in total disagreement with Cals lifetime contract when that happened. He would have never left Kentucky for the same pay at UCLA, that's stupid and cal isn't that stupid. Ucla can't even sell out games, nobody really cares there.
And I'll stick with it being dumb to give pope or any coach 5 , 6 , or 8 plus years without real Kentucky level results first. We also over paid because he would have came for 3.5 mil a year for 4 years I bet. He must have the best agent ever but I think it's more mitch just loves handing out money, but it's not my money so I care less about that. Hubert davis BTW only make 3.2 mil a year.
But giving more years with still a big unknown, it's dumb. At this point pope could be awesome make a final four this year or next and I look dumb but it's also an equal chance that a sweet 16 is the furthest he goes over the next five years and then we are in a situation where we need to move on and can't just like Cal had a strangle hold on us.

I'm beating a dead horse with my point and hopefully my arguement doesn't matter anyway and he goes to a final four in the next three years or so.
One more point, we wanted to run tubby off because he just kept making elite 8s and now we are giving extensions for sweet 16s. So yea call me a troll, but having high standards is what keeps our program on top. If this deal had just said final four instead, I would be saying yes that makes perfect sense for auto extension for making final four.
