Poor free throw shooting

If you look at the overall stats, defense and poor free throw shooting really stand out. Poor defense in the first half, and poor free throw shooting for the game. Field goal shooting for both teams was about the same. UK was 25 for 63, and Ohio S. was 26 for 64. Three point shooting, UK was 9 for 19, Ohio S 9 for 18. Rebounding, both had 13 offensive rebounds, UK total was 40 and Ohio S total was 42.
Free throws, was the major difference. UK was 8 of 14 for 57% , Ohio S 13 for 17 for 76%. If Coach Cal is going to run the "Dribble Drive", it is imperative that we hit at least 70 to 75 % of our free throws. If we don't. in the closing minutes of a game, were going to be at the line. Some of you may remember Houston when they lost to N C State in the Championship game, or Memphis loss to Kansas in the Championship Game. I guarantee you Coach Cal remembers the latter.
Our defense was better in the second half, and they shot 40% for the game, while we shot 39% for the game. Were not going to win many games when we shoot 39% from the field and just 57% from the Free throw line.
Ohio State was not that good a team, just 5-5 for the season. Hopefully Skal will improve and Poy will quit disappearing. Briscoe will probably be shooting more free throws then anyone else. He has to get his percentage up to at least 60 to 65%, not 25% which he had in the Ohio S game. If not, it could be a long year.

Briscoe and Lee are shooting around 39% from the line. For a college basketball player that is atrocious.

I can live with Lee.

Two reasons
1) He's not going to be going to the line a whole bunch
2) He's not going to improve at the line most likely

Briscoe however needs to get better. A big part of his game is driving and getting fouled. He has to knock some down

Not to belittle FTs and their importance however, if we hit 2 more then we are at 76% and still lose by 5.

Our problems are much worse.

Yes Briscoe needs to make more as does Marcus Lee and our Senior cannot choke on the front end of a 1and1 in the clutch, but the game was decided much earlier and for far more concerning reasons.

Our toughest guy is freshman 2g playing like a PF?
Our senior can bench 400 but has weak hands?
Our top draft pick cannot win any battles in the post?
Our most improved big man still gets lost on defense and drops more balls than a UK wide receiver?
Our "Top PG in College" forgot how to shoot?
Our offense is either stagnant or weaves into a packed zone?
Our bigs jump on EVERY ball fake? Hell, Skal jumped once and the guy didnt even ball fake!!!

No killers, no leaders, no identity.


How much of this can be improved over the next 2 months? Could be Cal's best coaching job if we make it to the Elite 8 right now.
